Identity Crisis Common culture will never exist in the United States, or the rest of the world. No one will ever share the same beliefs, views, and identities they have due to the diversity of the world. According to Anthony Appiah, the author of “For Racial Identities”, he believes that “And there is not now and there has never been a common culture in the United States, either. The reason is simple: the United States has always been multilingual, and has always had minorities who did not speak or understand English.” (Appiah,86) Appiah is absolutely right; the United States has always been a melting pot of different ethnicities, religions, etc. But what about the rest of the world? If there is no common culture in the world, why …show more content…
In 2012, Chrysler released a Super Bowl commercial called “It’s Halftime, America” featuring a voiceover from actor Clint Eastwood. “It’s Halftime, America” is seen as an inspirational commercial to the general American public, telling the people watching that America is experiencing a halftime, and is about to come back. Chrysler uses the example of Detroit as a city coming back from desperation and hopelessness, and Eastwood’s voiceover narration makes more effective. The rhetoric behind the commercial is used very effectively, as the commercial is seen as a hopeful message to Americans, and using traditional American values to drive that message of nationality and pride. The message, however, is completely wrong. The commercial, in a sense, is an example of common culture and embracing nationality too …show more content…
Just recently, the issue of illegal immigration in the United States has been on everyone’s minds, especially with the 2016 presidential election coming up. The United States population is vastly divided on this issue, which brings up the concept of common culture yet again. Appiah states, “With differing cultures, we might expect misunderstandings arising out of ignorance of each others’ values, practices, and beliefs; we might even expect conflicts because of differing values or beliefs. The paradigms of difficulty in a society of many cultures are misunderstandings of a word or gesture…” (Appiah, 88) Ignorance, according to Appiah, causes misunderstanding, which leads to conflict of different peoples. The phrase, “Ignorance is bliss” may actually be a negative connotation to the world. Not being aware of the problems of the world leads to more conflict, and more divisions. Therefore, ignorance causes common culture to not exist in the world. Too many ignorant politicians, military leaders, etc. cause the world to be more divided on key issues and
We see commercials everyday and everywhere whether it is on the TV, newspaper, the radio, or magazine. No matter where you go, they are everywhere. Perhaps the most commonly known commercials are the Super Bowl commercials. They have been around for a long time since the 1970s, but one commercial that stood out was the Budweiser commercial, “Born the Hard Way.” “Born the Hard Way” efficiently persuades people to drink and buy Budweiser, but it also encourages people, who are hostile towards others who are not American, to not criticize others in regards to their background, the color of their skin, or their ethnicity.
In the novel excerpt “What is Cultural Identity” by Elise Trumbull and Maria Pacheco, they define the aspects of cultural identity and how each individual views others. Furthermore, when talking about the cultures of communities, they explain, “Social groups existing within one nation may share a common language and a broad cultural identity but have distinct ethnic identities associated with a different language and history,” (Trumbull and Pacheco 9-10). Taking America for example, many ethnicities of people are melted together into one nation, yet share the same language and contain similar cultural identities, as Trumbull and Pacheco stated. The differing backgrounds of individuals in these communities is what diversifies the entire nation, accepting every person with any culture.
Within a single culture there are differences based on religion, politics, nationality, race, and ideology that go largely unassumed by its members. This leads to people defining others in ways that are entirely inaccurate. Members of these imagined communities who live without their identities being recognized by the larger majority are very similar to the subordinate, more “primitive” cultures that exist in the world in the sense that most of the time, they go unacknowledged by larger, more advanced powers. When these subsidiary entities are unable to make themselves known, they simply become easily influenced by higher powers since they tend to become “a quiescent, ignorant, manipulable electorate” (Pratt, 510). It is vital that these marginalized peoples learn to make themselves heard, for there are many principles and ideas that can be learnt from them.
The article ‘’What Every American Should Know’’ by Eric Liu acknowledges the struggles, the rapidly changing, and all of the multicultural issues that continually expands through every day of the culture wars. So within this article Liu is confronting a very substantial topic, which he asserts the problem of cultural diversity or the culture wars inside of the United States. In the article Liu provides the reader with many different examples all the way from cultural literacy, multiculturalism, and many examples from history over the years. Liu also expresses these examples in a way that the reader can absorb the details in a different style were the reader has to look at each example in a different aspect to fully understand what he is trying to stay. Liu evaluates E.D Hirsch and talks about the list. The list that every American should know, containing ten words that every citizen in America should know. Liu discourages people use Hirsch’s list because of the time differences between the past and the future, and how the culture war has progressed through time. Liu has evolved Hirsch’s idea and created something more modern that people can create their own list to show the people of America different opinions to have and no one is wrong or right that is what makes this list so influential. In a commercial shown this past Sunday during the super bowl featured what is described as a political statement. Although, the owner of the company 84 Lumber which produced this commercial is saying otherwise. Making the statement “My intent was to show that through struggles we will do anything we possibly can to make the world a better place for our children,” 84 Lumber’s CEO Maggie Hardy Magerko said. While she had said, many people are of course taking to social media to express either love or hate towards the company. Some even going as far as to cancel orders with 84 Lumber, because of the commercial. Nonetheless, the commercial aired during the super bowl but was only 90 seconds long and ended
We are generally focusing this research on the time before 1500 CE, but the same concept of comparing different cultures to each other to gain a more inclusive perspective of the human experience remains applicable in any time period, from the birth of humanity to the present day. Historical and cultural comparisons can be used to gain a better, more complete understanding of the modern world. By looking outside of one’s own individual experiences, one can find a more comprehensive understanding of the world. Right now, here in the United States, there is a huge political divide that is, ultimately, a controversy over whether or not we should accept other cultures and beliefs. This has led to a growing tension among the people of this country that is just waiting to break free of its confines—this was extremely apparent in the recent presidential election. I freely admit to bias—I am firmly entrenched on one side of this great political divide—but if everyone one could just come to understand other people, people who are noticeably different then themselves, a little better, to embrace differences rather than fear them, we could work to narrow this gaping schism. Maybe then, life might be a little bit brighter for us
In American society, there are multiple cultures and races exist. Since immigrants bring the various cultures to America, Americans face a highly controversial problem. Some of the Americans believe all of the ethnic groups assimilate into a common culture can help Americans distinctly identify themselves. Others argue that ethnic groups should not abandon their cultural heritages background. As a result, merging different cultures into one new culture will cause America lose its cultural diversity which is one significant charm of this country. On the contrary, if every ethnic group only focuses on building their own community and resists communicate with others, it will aggravate the separation of a nation. Although people often argue about these two ways which one is more appropriate to Americans, I think Richard Rodriguez's idea is more realistic in nowadays American society. Rodriguez resists the idea of the melting pot, and believes that assimilation is inevitable and reciprocal. In the essay Does America Still Exist?, Rodriguez explains his thought to us through his experiences.
Today, as Americans, we are surrounded by an increasing number of very different cultures, and along with that we are surrounded by numerous
Did you ever know that every country has different cultural values and norms that may cause misunderstanding among cultures around the globe? Of course, I didn’t really know that till I migrated from my country to the USA. A long time ago, I believed that the world was filled with homogenous societies which are based upon one culture only and that culture must be my own culture which I must follow as the ethnocentric standard to all other nations in the world. But later, I had experienced living in multi cultural communities and different continents around the globe, such as Africa and Asia, where getting involved in other people’s lives is very common. As a result of my experience, I have realized that American cultural values have less
Almost every successful orator, or public speaker, uses the art of rhetoric to influence his or her audience. If it is used correctly, the use of rhetorical devices such as logos, ethos and pathos can be very beneficial while trying to persuade a large audience. During The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Antony and Brutus both give speeches to a crowd of Roman citizens. Antony uses the art of rhetoric correctly, therefore his speech was more influential than Brutus’s speech was.
Furthermore, cultural conflict reinforces cultural domination or ethno-centricity (Mayer, 2000). According to Mayer (2000), culture are common norms, values, practices, and
The Pepsi ‘Hyped for Halftime’ billboards were fairly simple in design – Pepsi blue background with a can of Pepsi front and center topped with the Super Bowl trophy. The overall message eluded to an impressive, highly-anticipated halftime show. These billboards were primarily placed around the central part of downtown Phoenix where the NFL Experience was taking place. Sides of buildings, inside and outside of the light rail, bus stops, outside and inside city buses were all platforms for displaying Pepsi’s ‘Hyped for Halftime’ advertisements. The advertisements began to appear about two to three weeks prior to the opening of the NFL Experience.
Ultimately, the ad received backlash because, “many [people] think that “America the Beautiful” is the country' national anthem and English is this country's national language,” noted in Indian Country Today (“Coca-Cola's 'America the Beautiful' Super Bowl Ad Causes Stir” par 2). As a result, these individuals believe “America the Beautiful” should only be sung it the English language. Building on the ideas presented in Indian Country Today, Damien Croghan, editor of the Daily Nebraskan, asserts “Xenophobic Americans feel that the presence of non-English languages representing our country somehow threatens their perceived idea of what it means to be American” (par 11). The people who took to social networking sites to discuss their concerns tend to believe the use of any language other than English is un-American. These outraged
The concept of culture is something that defines many aspects of one’s life. From physical objects to different ways of thinking, culture adds significance to human life and makes groups of people distinct from one another. Culture is essentially a group of people who come together with similar interests and points of view. According to the Center for Advanced Language Acquisition of the University of Minnesota, “culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization.” From a more sociological perspective, culture is a way in which people come together in order to fulfill their needs. These shared patterns and ideas identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group.” Culture is one of the things that sets the United States apart from the rest of the world. Not that the rest of the world is not cultural, but the circumstance here is different. Many people of different cultural backroads come to this country in search of a better life. As a consequence, the United States has become a place where many cultures merge together like a colossal pot soup.
Firstly, diversity is the greatest capability which adds all different flavors in that society. Different religions, lifestyle, background and values are coming together and building new unique culture. Each person brings experience and thoughts. They want to have something also they have some perceptions which they don’t want to have in their life. Because of that in my opinion United States is the country which is not attached to the fixed culture. But, it is culture like a growing child. It changes to the best side according every evolution. In the United States different religions also irreligious people are able to live together without any problem and
