First and foremost, I was astonished by the level of inquiry of the students at Mishima-Kita Senior High School. It blew me it. We have visited several high schools and Cram Schools, including Nada High School, and not a single student has asked used tough, politically relevant, and even cross-culturally taboo questions. I was extremely impressed by the girl who asked if the use of an atomic weapon on Japan during WWII was justified. This question is cross-cultural taboo between American and Japanese people. Its something nobody wants to talk about. This tabooness is exactly what made it a great question, because speaking about taboo subjects can be incredibly constructive. Students also talked to us about a myriad of difficult issues including

Q6. Japan was a country that had kept to themselves, they were closed off from most of the outside world. Due to their isolation, they were unable to keep up with the times. This meant that they would be behind in almost everything, especially industrialization. The Industrial Revolution had been a major success and played a key role in the wealth and height of power in many of the European nations. Once the Japanese had opened their eyes to all of the possibilities, they were in awe. Many of there influences came from the European nations and the United States. All f these countries had modernized and Japan was left standing alone. Japan had felt left out after seeing the modernization and the positive effects it had on the other nations. They to wanted to become strong and powerful. In my opinion the United States and other European nations played monumental roles in the motivation of Japan when it came to building their empire.

It does not matter how well made a product is, if nobody knows about it, then it will not sell. In order to make this well made product sell, one must advertise its usefulness and practicality to the correct audience. This targeted advertising is a very exact science, and if a company miscalculates on the smallest part of their market research and advertisement placement, then it will not succeed in selling the product or idea. One example of a well placed and persuasive ad can be found on the fifth page of the August 4th edition of Sports Illustrated.
Japan is a striving cultural and rich country. Japan shares its culture with the country and the world with its many festivals and there are a lot of festivals. School come first. If you have ever participated in sport during school, then you have most likely heard that a million times. It used to be so important to have good grades so you would be able to play in the sport that you love to play. Not anymore. Is a “C” average really that hard to maintain? Apparently, the Dayton Public School District believes so. The DPS district recently changed their grade point average (GPA) requirements for students participating in athletics. The new GPA requirement for student athletes in Dayton Public Schools is a 1.0 and they must be enrolled and participate in the Assisted Academic Intervention Program, which is a “mandatory tutoring program for those athletes at the low end of the scale” (Kelley). The previous policy was that the students had to be passing at least five of their classes and maintain a 2.0 which is a “C” average. Superintendent Rhonda Corr said this new policy could ultimately keep some students in school, but is that really the case? The district lowered their standards to a “D” average. That teaches the students that it is okay to turn in maybe two assignments and still be able to play sports. High school is not about sports. It is about preparing for college and a future career. A “D” average is not preparing anyone for college. High school is important, and everyone should be encouraging the students to perform their best in the classroom.

Even though the Tokyo Station was constructed in 1914, its actual plan is connected to the history of Japan’s rail in the 1880s (Ito n.p). It is therefore viewed by the Japanese as being significant in the advancement of rail technology and as a symbolic structure within Japan. By 1885, several railway tracks were already passing through Tokyo, thereby necessitating the need for a central terminal to be built in the region between Ueno and Shinbashi. The station which was to accommodate Tokyo’s entire network was simply referred to as the “central terminal” (Ito n.p).
