Bullied Amelia Purse Period: ½
Jamie Nabozny was a victim of bullying all throughout middle and high school. He was physically and verbally abused on many occasions due to his sexual orientation/identifying as gay. Jamie felt trapped and hopeless after being relentlessly bullied day after day. During one of these incidents, students repeatedly kicked Jamie in the library and by doing so (transition), left him aggrieved, bruised and bleeding (sensory details) with little to no self-esteem. When he was found, he had several broken bones which required surgery to repair. Due to this incident and countless others, Nabozny’s parents decided to address the school board regarding the issue. (background info) However, when given

(point 2) One such example is again, Jamie Nabozny. After the principal and school board did nothing about the bullying the abuses progressively became worse. Jamie was now harassed more frequently (not only during recess or before and after school but also in class) and more brutally. During one incident Jamie was pushed down and tormented by other students in class. In addition (transition), he was called oppressive and funereal (vocabulary for craft) names . These actions resulted in bruises and extremely low, depression like morale. (statement of evidence) This happened as a result (transition) of how the school left the bullies alone without any punishment. This caused the bullies to believe that it was acceptable to bully Jamie, and there would be no punishment for this behavior. Therefore (transition), they began harassing Jamie in class (more frequently) and more brutally (more intensely and therefore more damaging and painful) resulting in a larger problem for the victim or Jamie Nabozny. (elaboration of evidence) This proves that once schools ignore the issue of bullying then the problem only escalates further. Once the school ignored the problem of Jamie being bullied the bullying happened more frequently and more brutally. This caused Jamie’s problem to escalate. By ignoring the issue schools only caused the bullying to become worse. (connection to thesis) This is significant because it shows how that by neglecting students schools not only allow the problem to persist, but by doing so allow it to become much worse.
TORTS laws offer compensation to individuals harmed by the unreasonable actions of others. TORTS claims are based on the legal premise that a person(s) is liable for the consequences of their conduct if it results in injury to others. In education-related cases, the most common TORT is negligence. Recently, several cases have occurred whereby negligence and bullying are interconnected with students suing their schools for failing to enforce anti-bullying policies and causing injury to their well being. A current case includes Maya Williams suing her former high school for negligence in regards to the enforcement of their anti-bullying policy. By looking into a precedent case, elements of negligence, and how bullying affects a student, we

Jamie Nabozny does not show acceptance of being bullied because he is gay and his school advisors not doing anything about it, because, he doesn’t believe people should be getting harassed and physically hurt because of the way they are. Jamie Nabozny doesn’t believe he should be bullied for being gay. He wants something to be done with the school not helping him and them not saying anything about it. He wants freedom so he doesn’t have to be scared to face school and not live in fear. He had to plan his ways of getting into school hiding once he was in there then stay after school so he didn’t have to run into the bullies. We know this because Jamie and his family talk about how they wanted to do something about the school authorities not doing anything and making up excuses. Jamie and his family took the school principals to court to try and get justice (Bullied). Because Jamie’s school principals did not do anything to help Jamie they went to court to help get justice. The School principals specifically Mary Podlesney, the principal of the junior high school, told Jamie and his family that boys will be boys and he has to accept the consequences of being openly gay and being bullied for it. She didn’t think they had to do anything about it because he was being bullied for being gay, she tough he chose to be so open so he needs to face the consequences

(Elaboration of Point and Evidence) She said there was something wrong with the victim (Jamie Nabozny). Instead of actually helping Jamie she just blamed it on him and said that it was his problem not the bullies. (Evidence that Supports your Point/Assertion from Documentary) Assistant Principal of Ashland High School, Tom Blauert, said “I will take care of it. I’ll talk to the kids”. He also said he would “talk” to the bullies, nevertheless, like Podlesney, he also did nothing about it. (Elaboration of Point and Evidence) Many different school administrators at Jamie’s schools said they would do something about the situation and talk to the bullies, yet, no one actually took action and stopped the harassment and abuse towards Jamie Nabozny. Nabokov’s writings in entomology are highly technical. His enthusiasm in the field had been initiated by books that he read in the attic of the country home of Vyra. He joined butterfly-collection trip annually and even commented: “The pleasures and rewards of literary inspiration are nothing beside the rapture of discovering a new organ under the microscope or an undescribed species on a mountainside in Iran or Peru. It is not improbable that had there been no revolution in Russia, I would have devoted myself entirely to lepidopterology and never written any novels at all.” Nabokov was a through taxonomist. He observed samples under a microscope days and nights, to the extent that his eyesight was permanently impaired. Although his work was
