James Joyce short story "The Dead" is written in a rambling manner which reveals an intriguing theme. The story revolved around Gabriel Conroy and his marriage with a woman named Gretta. It is obvious that their marriage is deteriorating because during his aunts dinner party he interprets sometjing differently from his wife. As his wife is listening to the song The Lass of Aughirm, he thinks that she is reacting to their loving marriage. However, Gabriel soon finds out that he reaction was due to the fond memory she had of her former lover named Micheal Furey.
