Question 1: What is the issue being given in the article and what is Jessica opinion about it? In other words, the issue is what to do about the problem of homelessness. The government had failed to reduce the amount of numbers of the homeless since 1996, therefore, increasing the amount to more than 13,000 in the last 5 years. Jessica Strutt is suggesting various ways to help the homeless. Jessica Strutt thinks it’s not right to punish them instead help the homeless by providing stable housing. Question 2: Explain why Jessica describes the homeless man’s “home” what effect might this have on the reader? Jessica describes the homeless man’s home as under the bridge, he and other homeless people climb to escape the icy cool breeze outside. Inside the day dark space. There is barely room to stand but at the end of the small space all of their belongings ---a few dirty blankets--- lay gathered. There’s the odd empty fuel or aerosol can because many of them are “sniffers”. The repetitive sound of cars going over the bridge seems at first to make this noisy choice for a home. But once you have sat there for a while contemplating what it would be like to sleep where they do. The effect that this has on the reader is to make you feel bad so you would consider helping out …show more content…
The type of evidence is used to support the author point of view include the following: As long as these people remain truly committed to breaking their addictions, why shouldn’t a state with social conscience assist them? In a long term, it would probably be cheaper than an alternative of having them end up before our courts and in jails. The Federal Government has set a goal of helping the homeless by 2020. WA appears to be doing its part to help achieve this by giving them a home already overcrowded jails. So next time you are enjoying your stroll around the river, space a thought for the man under the
Based on the current working conditions and the economy, implementing a policy of helping the homeless finding low-wage jobs to the adjusted living wage would greatly mitigate many obstacles that the working poor as well as the homeless are facing. This would allow Jennifer to be able to provide for herself and for her kids. In her current conditions, the low-wages have prevented her from taking care of herself properly as well as forced her to be homeless as she struggles to pay the rent for the apartment as well as provide adequate food for herself and kids. By implementing this policy, this would greatly reduce the amount of poverty the United States is currently having as well as provide the basic necessities that all humans should
Here in Tahoe, we are lucky enough to experience a great quality of life, and only a few have to face the horrible life of poverty and homelessness. However, nationwide, even right outside the basin, homelessness is a growing epidemic across the country. There are many ways one can become homeless; for the most part poverty. There are also different concentrations of homeless in different types of terrain, such as urban or suburban areas. Last, there is the ever- growing homeless population, and how much money it costs us for others to live in poverty. These are the questions we ask ourselves about homelessness, and the only way we can help is to know the facts about this lingering
1. This informative speech on “The Cause of Homelessness “is very Inform able and worth listening to, because in today’s economy it could be you or me. Some seem to think homelessness is choice. I find this speech relevant to the world I live in today, due to the high unemployment rate, declining job market, and the economic hardships that families are enduring. This topic is not a broad one, but yet can be spoke of in depth due to the fact I see many homeless people but never thought it would be me until I seen a family friend who has lost everything, this is what made me more aware that it is not just a choice and any day it could be me. So when you see
A suburban life is a paradise full of shopping, colorful gardens, and well-groomed homes. Despite all these benefits, a suburban life is an isolated life. People living in suburbs are rarely exposed to miseries in society. One of these conflicts is homelessness. When living in an environment surrounded by homes, individuals often have difficulty imagining not being able to sleep in a warm bed, eat a proper meal or even receive necessary medical attention. This grim situation is depicted in the writings of Jeannette Walls. In the autobiography The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls accurately portrays homelessness by explaining its causes, its impact upon daily life, and its effect on victimized families.
One of the most discussed topics around the world is homelessness. Each and everyday more and more people become homeless. People around the world have tried numerous times to resolve this dilemma. This situation is growing and it 's starting to spiral out of control. One solution that 's getting popular the more we let this situation grow is that criminalizing the homeless is good. People cannot criminalize the homeless. Homeless people should not be criminalized because they have nowhere to go, they have it hard enough, and putting them in jail will solve nothing.
One of the simplest pieces of knowledge we acquire in elementary school (for future growth and development) are the three basic needs a living organism requires for living: food, water, and shelter. However, not everyone has access to all of these essentials. Homeless people are faced with awful conditions and suffer more due to poor weather conditions, diseases, and lack of safety. There hasn’t been much progress on this issue, and if this continues, the number of homeless people will only increase. In a few states the topic is being named as a “statewide emergency”, but unfortunately this problem is national. Instead of focusing on state programs, local programs and non-profit organizations to fix the housing issue, we must all contribute to ending this epidemic. The National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) released an article stating, “In January 2015, 564,708 people were homeless on a given night in the United States” (Snapshot of Homelessness). We must develop a solution to end long term homelessness immediately. The best way of solving this issue is to provide stable long-term housing, which is a term used to describe the home’s environment and financial status.
Lastly, one more thing the government can do to stop homeless from living on the streets is to open a place at night for them to just stay. Opening a place for homeless to come to at nights is a great thing to do. When winter months comes around, the days are going to be too cold for people to live out on the streets. Nobody can live out on the streets when the temperature is going to be below zero or close to zero. The government should start doing some of these ideas because one day it might be them that is homeless and don’t have any place to
Homelessness has been a major problem all over the United States for decades. Going into the major cities like New York City, Chicago or even Baltimore people are able to see the struggle the homeless are going through year around. It is easy to say for the homeless to just get a job and make simple money but it is easier said than done. The reason why homelessness is becoming a major problem is not having affordable housing, sufficient income and restrictions of healthcare services. With all three of these issues we can be able to change someone’s life by helping them on the right track. Meanwhile, if ignored and not confronting the problem it will never be solved and then become worse. The solutions to Baltimore’s homelessness are for
The state of Idaho has slowly began to lose its fight against chronic homelessness, as even after years of struggle, its homeless rates have only increased. Idaho has implemented a variety of tactics in order to combat its growing number of homeless citizens, however, all efforts had left the state with unsatisfactory results. Boise, Idaho had initiated, ‘Hiding the Homeless’ which used the method of harassing the homeless with the hope that they would gather their belongs and leave. For short amount of time, this strategy did act as a deterrent for the states homeless rate. But, Idaho was not victorious for long as the rates
Remember the struggle and pain of waiting for that lunch bell to ring so that you can satisfy the stomach that has been tormenting you throughout the class period? And remember the times you were dying in the blazing hot heat or shivering in the piercing ice cold while waiting for a ride home? Now imagine going through the pain of hunger and the repeated torment by the elements all because you do not have a home. Unfortunately that has been the reality of homeless people throughout America. Homelessness has been a struggling issue for many nations of the world and there have been very little offered to solve this growing economic and social problem. In America, many consider themselves blessed and wish to help out those in need while there are others that choose to view see such people as worthless or just hopeless people who can not make something out of themselves. Consequently people are less likely to help out because they view homeless people as those who do not deserve help keeping many homeless Americans on the streets. In the article, Homeless Demands Local Solutions states that in the United States, “The number of homeless people across the country is as high as 3.5 million in any given year” (Lee and Finley). Rising population in homelessness calls for action from the government and the people because only then, will America be able to curb the rise in homelessness. Many misguided Americans see homelessness as a state of choices and not circumstance.
“Homelessness is about people rather than merely shelter and is often exacerbated by a number of other issues including poor physical and emotional health, disability, drug and alcohol issues, and financial problems.” When you see people sleeping and begging on the streets, you think that’s all there is but in fact they only make up 5% of all the homeless people in Australia. Homelessness has become an increasing problem throughout Australia. I contend that the City of Melbourne’s response to homelessness should be enforced into the rest of the country as it is thoroughly thought through and brought results to the place of Melbourne. I will argue this through explaining the approach from the City of Melbourne, the factors leading to homelessness, the diversity of this and share a life story with you all about a woman named Deb.
When one is attempting to address and/or fix the issue of homelessness, it is important to understand the types of classifications, or different groups, of homeless. The first and largest group of homeless that needs to be addressed is the chronically homeless. The chronically homeless represent 10% of the single homeless population, and itself represents approximately 50% of homeless people, over time. The next group is the episodically homeless group, who use shelter repeatedly, and should probably be dealt with first. This group makes up around 9% of the single homeless population and carries a high cost when housed in shelters. The high cost comes from the member’s constant interaction with other very costly public systems, like jails and prisons and hospitals. All of this cost is then passed on to the tax payers and not the members themselves, which is why it is so important to deal here first. Lastly is the transitionally homeless, who are the relatively short stays in the homeless assistance systems, who exit it and return infrequently, if at all (Homelessness in America: Statistics and
As I stated before, far too often our society ignores that homelessness is a struggle for many people. Additionally, our society often thinks these people choose to be homeless. Terra talked about an incident at a gas station, and how one of the employees at the gas station said all the people at across the street are drunks and addicts. She talked about how upset she gets when people have these misconceptions about people that are struggling with homelessness. Hearing her talk about this broke my heart because our society should not shame people for being homeless; instead, we should be looking at solutions to end homelessness. It is a human right to have basic human needs, yet our society continually provokes their unjust agenda.
The risk of individual who may currently have a home, but are at the brink of homelessness is high. It is often easier to ignore people who are homeless or even ignore that homelessness exists in our society because it is easier for society to blame the individual rather than society itself. It is important to advocate for those who are not able speak up for themselves. The article by the National Homeless Coalition (2009) states that there is a decline in public assistance for individuals who are homeless; therefore it is integral that we as a society seek assistance for these individuals and help promote awareness of the rise in homelessness.
However, the current measures they are doing are not creating an impact at all. I conducted an interview with Mr. Felix who volunteers to help the homeless in Detroit on the weekends. He has been helping the homeless for about four years now and Mr. Felix feels that the city is not doing enough and that they should acknowledge the current condition of the homeless as a major problem, “...they are using a bandage to cover a wound, what they really need is some needle and thread if we want to stitch this up” (Felix, personal communication, 2018). From working with the homeless he fully understands what they need and what the city is not doing for them. Detroit should look into their policies to be better aimed towards the homeless instead of only partly helping them. The only thing the policy makers would have to do is communicate with the homeless, or the homeless assistance programs to create better policies. Mr. Felix also believes that, “there just isn’t enough money. There are too many homeless who need things such as food and clothing, which is hard to provide when you don’t have the funds to help them” (Felix, personal communication, 2018). Organizations who help the homeless lack the money to fully help them and get them back on their feet. These lack of funds can be seen as another reason why homelessness is still a problem. According to Homeless Action of Detroit in 2016
