The war was between France and England, which began over the land and control of Aquitaine, located in the southern part of France. Since she was raised in a poor family she decided to travel to france to confront the uncrowned Dauphin to reclaim his throne and defeat the english people. Joan of Arc was sent with the french troops to the siege of Orleans and advanced to importance after the siege was finished after nine days.

The middle ages in Europe was a dark time to live in. Trade and travel was not safe, people were dying of sickness, most people could not even read or write. Some people, however became heroes and role models during these dark times. One of these people was Joan of Arc. Joan had special abilities, led an army into battle, and became one of the most well known women in history.

Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans," was born in 1412 in Domrémy, Bar, France. A national heroine of France, at age 17 she led the French army to victory over the British at Orléans. Captured a year later, Joan was burned at the stake as a heretic by the English and their French collaborators. She was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint more than 500 years later, on May 16, 1920. Joan is an excellent example of an adaptive leader in history.

As the war dragged on for a total of 116 years, England was slowly forced out of France with the help of a faithful young woman. Joan first went into battle when she was only 17 years old, dressed as a man. Her greatest victory was the Siege of Orléans that lasted from 1428-1429, where she later earned the nickname “Maid of Orléans”.

During the war Joan always places herself at the front of French forces, and she is twice wounded. After they won the war in Orleans she is granted the title of “Maid of Orleans” but for short “the Maid”. Before she had the title of “Maid of Lorraine”. She was such a good soldier that she didn’t care that she would be captured and taken prisoner midsummer's day. She even decided “Instead of the sword the king offered her, she begged that search might be made for an ancient sword buried, as she averred, behind the altar in the chapel of Ste-Catherine-de-Fierbois. It was found in the very spot her voices indicated. There was made for her at the same time a standard bearing the words Jesus, Maria, with a picture of God the Father, and kneeling angels presenting a fleur-de-lis” (New Advent). That took a lot of ways for being a brave warrior and the sword having the words Jesus, Maria and a picture of God next to it also put a big part of her religious value with it. Joan of Arc, was born in medieval France, She had no military training, Joan convinced the prince Charles of Valois to allow her to lead a French army against the city of Orléans during Hundred Years’ War (Money-Kyrle, 1933; DeVries, 1999). Charles after becoming king of France named Joan of Arc and her family to be French nobility due to Joan's services to France during the fight against England (Tiefenbrun, 2006; DeVries, 1999). Joan was later captured by John of Luxembourg and burnt at the stake for heresy and witchcraft, but in reality it was for her aid of King Charles during the war (Tiefenbrun, 2006; DeVries, 1999).

Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans", is viewed as a courageous woman of France for her part amid the Lancastrian period of the Hundred Years' War, and was consecrated as a Roman Catholic Saint. While Joan of Arc is a major medieval religious figure she was clearly a huge advocate of violent bloodshed and she used religion to justify it. When Joan made her case to help France win the Hundred’s years’ war she claimed that she was sent by God to assist England in the war, “The King should not turn away from, or reject, the Pucelle, who says she has been sent by God” (The Life of Joan Arc, 75). It is clear that Joan of Arc believes that England’s war with France was part of God’s will and that it was her duty to help assist her country in war. After convincing King Charles to help him in the Hundreds year war he sends her to the siege of Orleans as part of a relief mission.

Born in Domremy, France, Joan grew up in a world where all she knew was war, work, and the Church. The Hundred Year’s War was seventy-five year in when Joan was born ("Joan of Arc" 191). Her father, Jacques d'Arc, was a farmer who taught her to work in the fields, take care of animals, and how to do “women’s work” (Bishop 316). During that time period, women were only regarded as child-bearers and had specific jobs, that was added with the basic work a man had to do (Gies 27). Joan was also recorded as illiterate, or wasn't able to read or write, which was probably because of her wealth status and because she was a woman (Harrison).

Her time was during the 100 years war which lasted over a century, But she was part of the Anglo-French conflict. At a young age she said that she heard the voices of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St.Margaret. The Saints had told here to send the English out of french territory.At the age of 16 she was gaven permission to enter the French royal court, their she met the milita leader and after telling him a prediction about a future battle that ended up being true she was able to talk to King Charels Vii. She was born in 1412 from a small village named Domremy in France, where she grew up learning how to sew, do household chores and mind cows under a harsh disciplinary father - Jaques d’Arc and a highly religious mother –Isabelle Romee. Her mother made sure as a young girl she was instilled with a deep love for the Catholic Church and its teachings.
