Joan of Arc led her people to victory and helped turn the tide for the Armagnacs and the success of France, despite the danger she faced. After leaving her village, Joan of Arc travelled to Vaucouleur, a Armagnac stronghold. There, she met with Robert de Baudricourt, the commander of the garrison (Vale and Lanhers). She asked him to allow her to meet the King, but he dismissed her. She soon returned, this time with “a small band of followers who believed her claims to be the virgin who (according to a popular prophecy) was destined to save France” (“Joan”). This time, Baudricourt gave her permission to go to the Prince. However, to get to Chinon, where the Prince lived, she would have to cross through enemy territory. Joan of Arc was just a girl until she put on the helmet and hoisted the sword that changed the course of her life. Joan was a soldier for France during the Hundred Years War. Not only was she a woman on the battlefield, but she led an army at the age of 16. Both her effort in the battles and her trial majorly changed the outcome of the war. Joan of Arc changed society and continues to influence history today through her poor upbringing and dedicated early life, her heroics and bravery in battle, her courage and defiance during her trial, and her role and influence as a Catholic saint.

“One day, when she was about thirteen, Joan sat in her father’s garden…A sudden flash of light seared her eyes… Somewhere out in the darkness, she heard a powerful male voice ‘Joan,’ it called” (25-26). This was the first time that this had happened and it wasn’t going to be the last time ether. Overtime she had got better at picking out this voice and finally one morning when she was daydreaming she had looked up and had saw the archangel Michael standing right beside her. Then after some time she was visited by the two saints she has always looked up to Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret. She took this as a calling to go and have the young dauphin Charles VII crowned (27-28).

Joan of Arc is credited with leading the French army to victory over England during the 100 years war, which actually lasted around 116 years. She believed she was a messenger of god and was born to bring an end to the war. With permission from the king, Joan of Arc, lacking military and tactical training, led the french army against the English in the city of Orléans. Joan met a tragic end when she was captured by the Anglo-Burgundian and tried as a witch. She was called guilty as a witch and a heretic which led to her untimely demise being burned at the stake at age 19.

When Joan was born, France was in a long war between England. The war is known as the “ Hundred Years’ War.” While Joan was young, she never was far from home and was poor. She took care of the animals and became a skilled seamstress. During the time of political upheaval, Joan started to have visions pushing her to lead a devoted, religious life.

When Joan was in Orléans for giving out supplies, she suddenly had the urge and inspiration to fight! Joan armed herself and traveled quickly to an English fort. Her arrival excited and pumped up the French troops fighting there and they surrounded the fort. The day after, she sent a letter of disobedience and defiance to the English. On may 6th, she moved towards another fort of the English. The English instantly abandoned the fort and moved to another area where more English troops were. Joan and a commander La Hire attacked them successfully. After that, Joan and La Hire advanced on another fort and the French troops sustained the attacks until the English were found retreating! The reason Joan first believed that she could create success on the warfield was because she had many visions and heard voices, ones she believed were sent by God. She then vowed to remain a virgin the rest of her life. In these messages sent by God, they said to go on a journey to save France from England and give Charles VII his place at the throne. In an interview with historian, Professor Charlotte Baune she says, “in the 15th century there was a strong belief that God could alter the course of history”. So when the word got out that Joan had been hearing messages from God, they looked past gender roles and let her lead an army into Orleans.

She was also a visionary and ethical leader. As a visionary leader, I will describe how Joan of Arc was an Advancer who took Gods message and formulated a plan to free France from the English. I will also tell you how she used transformational leadership and Idealized Influence, leading an army of men into battle even while she was wounded. Next, I will show you how she was an ethical leader and demonstrated the trait of loyalty by obeying Gods commands. I will describe how she dealt with the ethical dilemma of potential harm when the English took her as a prisoner. Finally, I will tell you how her use of Idealized Influence inspired me as a leader in the military and how I faced the ethical dilemma of potential harm while deployed in Iraq. First, let me tell you why Joan was a visionary leader.

Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans," was born in 1412 in Domrémy, Bar, France. A national heroine of France, at age 17 she led the French army to victory over the British at Orléans. Captured a year later, Joan was burned at the stake as a heretic by the English and their French collaborators. She was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint more than 500 years later, on May 16, 1920. Joan is an excellent example of an adaptive leader in history.

In 1429, nearing the end of the Hundred Years’ War between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France; a sixteen year old Joan of Arc was directed by a revelation to make her way to the Dauphin’s court in Chinon and disclose to him the purpose of her divine mission. Joan professed that by the order of God—via the spirits of Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret—she was to renew the French nation and lead Charles VII to claim his throne. After successfully completing her mission, she was captured in battle months later and turned over to the English. There, she would be charged and put on trial for Heresy, leading to her execution. Joan has seen God, brought her country to victory, and has become a saint, in and after her lifetime. Her legacy lives on today, as she is still one of the greatest human beings of the past today. Joan of Arc grew up in an uneducated and very poor family who lived in Domrémy, France near Champagne during 1400’s. When she was born on January 6,1412 , France was on the edge of losing the Hundred Years’ War, and they had no chance of beating the British that had already won multiple battles. Joan’s father was a farmer, that made just enough for his family.

Saints are always different from everyday people, thus no one understands them in their lives, only a lot of years after their death. Joan of Arc was a saint like this as well, she was too far ahead of her times and was killed by her fellow men, because they didn’t know what else to do. She was canonized in 1920, after 489 years of her death. In my opinion, she was not only a saint, but meant to be an angel and showed a good example to all of us, how to behave ourselves in the name of honour, honesty, and glory.
