On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dealey Plaza. Kennedy was one of the most well-liked presidents in history. He gave off a presence that felt very familiar and welcoming. Being the first ¨television president,¨ many Americans felt like they knew him personally. The assassination of President Kennedy came as a shock to the nation, given his popularity with the people. The nation was devastated and many Americans lost confidence in the government and the world as a whole. During this time, conspiracy theories started to become increasingly popular. Kennedy. Oswald had a troubled youth. He was an orphan, he had no father figure, and he and his mother moved often, never giving him any time to make any lasting friends (McAdams). He was bullied in school due to his western accent and apparel. Because of this, he stopped going to school and eventually truancy charges were brought upon him. He was institutionalized at Youth House where they examined his mental health and emotional stability. They discovered that he was disturbed from a lack of family, affection, and friendship. However, he did not show signs of a psychopath who would grow up to be an assassin. Once he was released from Youth House, Oswald returned to school for a year and then took a year off to work. In 1956, he joined the Marines until he was released from active duty in 1959. He then moved to Soviet Russia for three years before returning to the U.S. It is believed that his motive for killing the president was his strong affiliations with communism. John Kennedy’s brother, Robert, was very open about wanting to stop the mafia. This theory says that the mafia either paid or framed Lee Harvey Oswald for the assassination of JFK as a warning to Robert Kennedy. Robert Kennedy was assassinated June 6, 1968. Another theory is that the government had JFK assassinated. Kennedy often talked about how he didn’t like the fact that the government kept so much information from the people. He made his dislike for the CIA obvious (Bender). This theory indicates that the CIA wanted to stop Kennedy from talking about their secrets so they had him assassinated. There isn’t any solid evidence that can support this theory. The most ridiculous conspiracy theory that deals with the Kennedy assassination is the one that says Lyndon B. Johnson had the president assassinated because he was power-hungry. There was a photo taken the day that Kennedy was assassinated and it appears that Johnson is smiling in it. Although that doesn’t prove anything, the nation was vulnerable and people were believing anything they heard, regardless of the proof or lack of. The most popular debunked theory is the “umbrella man.” The umbrella man is how conspiracy theorists refer to a man in the background of one of the pictures from that fatal day.
