During the Civil War, he got shot in the chest. The wound in his chest was what had led him to his morphine addiction. If he did not have an addiction to morphine, then he would not have found treatment. If Pemberton was not searching for a cure, then everyone would not get the beverage called Coca-Cola. Pemberton figured if he could come up with something to cure his addiction, then he would be able to sell it to a huge market of fellow-addicts. John Stith Pemberton’s morphine addiction was what led him to develop the original formula for Coca-Cola (John Stith Pemberton). Coca-Cola is known for being Pemberton’s most famous formula. The Civil War is liable for Pemberton’s invention of Coca-Cola during this period. If Pemberton died, then his invention of Coca-Cola would have a huge effect on sales of Pepsi-Cola (History Briefs 2011-2012). Pemberton Company, which gave him a huge salary, did not run so smoothly. The reason why Pemberton’s business did not run very well was due to the period of prohibition during the year 1885. Since Atlanta prohibited the use of alcohol in 1885, Pemberton had to swap the French Wine Coca formula by removing the word French Wine (Biography John S. Pemberton – Inventor of Coca Cola). Cocaine, being the originally formula used for Coca-Cola, is no longer the main content for Coca-Cola. Cocaine was then replaced with sugar, caffeine, starch, citric acid, and oil fruits. “For the main ingredient, Pemberton had to find and collect seeds cola plant native to tropical regions of West Africa and the tree coca leaves from South Africa” (Biography John S. Pemberton – Inventor of Coca Cola). Pemberton dried both the cola nut and coca leaves manually. Pemberton made his business successful and the potion he had created was revealed as he had hoped (Biography John S. Pemberton – Inventor of Coca Cola). Then Pemberton’s colleague Robinson came up with a name for the potion and he suggested the name “Coca Cola”. Pemberton approved the name “Coca Cola”. The Coca Cola formula, coming from Pemberton, was named “Merchandise 7X”, or it was abbreviated M7X. The naming of the Coca Cola formula was highly
Pemberton had created a drink called French Wine Coca. It was made from an extract from the leaf of Peruvian Coca, the purest wine and the Cola nut. Dr. Pemberton said it was an excellent tonic that helped digestion, respiration and the muscular and nervous system. In 1886, prohibition came to the city of Atlanta. Dr. Pemberton could no longer sell his French Wine Coca. That is when the Coca-Cola formula was concocted in a three-legged kettle in Dr. Pemberton’s backyard. He removed the wine and added sugar syrup. His bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, suggested the name and designed the logo that Coca-Cola still carries today. It was first sold in Atlanta, Georgia at Jacob’s Pharmacy. They sold about nine servings per day and made about $50 the first year. However, Dr. Pemberton spent over $70 in expenses so he lost
The story of one of the biggest marketing blunders in history, is a story of false hubris, desperation, and driving ambition. Made by one of the largest corporations in the world. The creators of a product on the forefront of the American consciousness. As intertwined into American culture as baseball, apple pie, and Thanksgiving dinner. That product of course was Coca Cola, the formula of which had remained unchanged close to 100 years. Since its creation by Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton in 1885 as a topical remedy marketed as a cure from ailments such as stomach pains, headaches, and even impotence, Coca Cola had grown into the number one drink in America.
The manufacturing and sales of Coca-Cola demonstrated the success of American industrialism and capitalism. John Pemberton, the creator of the beverage and the company, was able to find ways to increase the company’s profits by using different ingredients than the original cocaine-laced French wine. It was able to be mass-produced and sold at a profitable price, and more factories were built as the company grew in success. Soon enough, Coca-Cola had their competitors, such as Pepsi Cola. The company was able to fight them off by means of globalization, by using advertising and by getting sponsored by many. Even Coca-Cola’s failures worked in its favor, such as not being able to profit in the Soviet-bloc countries or the Middle East, because Coca-Cola still gained brand recognition. Pemberton’s venture with his company shows capitalistic values: he was able to control the industry of a major part of the United States through his prudent
Coca-Cola- In May 1886 John Pemberton invented a drink, Coca-Cola, by accidentally stumbling on the right combination of ingredients while trying to devise a cure for headaches. Pemberton was an experienced maker of patient medicines, which were hugely popular in America in the late nineteenth century. The name was coined by one of Pemberton’s business associates, Frank Robinson. He also contributed to the promotion of the drink by sending out tickets for free samples and putting up posters and banners that read “Drink Coca-Cola, 5c.” Robinson also developed the famous logo for Coca-Cola, which appeared in newspaper
Coca–Cola a leading manufacturer, distributor and marketer of soft drink products. Coca–Cola was not always the sugary syrup soft drink most people know today. As a matter of fact, before 1886 Coca-Cola was made with alcohol and cocaine. Concocted by Dr. John Pemberton a pharmacist in Atlanta Georgia Coca-Cola was originally named Pemberton’s French Wine Coca. Dr. Pemberton marketed the drink as a cure all for mental and physical disorders and was sold from a soda fountain at his local drug store. A step ahead of prohibition, Dr. Pemberton replace the wine in his formula with a sugary syrup. The cocaine portion of Coca-Cola was removed before 1914 when cocaine was deemed illegal in the United States of America. Coca-Cola as we know today still contains coca but the narcotic portion of cocaine, it is removed. Today, Coca-Cola has expanded to over 200+ countries. From concerts to sport venues to local restaurants you are more than likely to come across a Coca-Cola product, Coca-Cola has had such an impact on society that it is given credit for how we portray Santa Clause today. Other credits should also be given to Coca-Cola like an increase in diabetes and other diseases.
During the Great Depression, Coca-Cola was publicized as the drink in a world without trouble, making it a popular drink amongst an impoverished country. Despite an economical recovery, Coca-Cola’s image never changed, being promoted as a drink that brings happiness and carefreeness. In addition, the popularity of Coca-Cola helped motivate inventors and entrepreneurs to create new carbonated drinks by introducing a thriving market. If people did not realize the potential in the soda market, then many other popular sodas would not be in existence. John Pemberton was not the creator of carbonated drinks, he, like many who soon followed, created a different flavoring to add into the carbonated
Where does Coca-Cola get its name? Why was it created? In 1886, the Georgia pharmacist, John Pemberton, designed Coca-Cola as a headache remedy and a stimulant. The original beverage contained cocaine and was used both as an intoxicating beverage and a medically useful tonic. The effects of the drink helped make it popular. Only in the early twentieth century was the drug eliminated from the Coca-Cola recipe and replaced with increased amounts of caffeine.[1]
Pharmacist John Pemberton originated Coke when he was trying to create a cure for headaches. He mixed different ingredients in a pot and then took the liquid that he created to the pharmacy to mix with soda water, creating Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola Company history originated in 1886 when the “curiosity of an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, led him to create a distinctive tasting soft drink that could be sold at soda fountains” (Coca Cola History, 2013, para. 1). He generated flavored syrup, took it to his
John Pemberton created Coca- Cola because of the Temperance. Since French Wine Coca had wine in it, it was made illegal. He needed something to sell to his costumers. John never got to see that his new soda product was a bestseller. He sold all the rights to the company 1n 1887.

John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist and “cash-strapped morphine addict,” created Coca-Cola in 1886. He used a French wine called Vin Mariani as his product to replicate. Coca-Cola was different because it was water-based, not wine-based, and included kola nut, caffeine, coca leaf extract, and sugar. It was originally sold as a medicine, a “brain tonic” that “Cures Morphine and Opium Habits and Desire for Intoxicants.” Later broke and ill from his stomach problems and morphine addiction, Pemberton sold the patent to Coca-Cola to Asa Candler, who later officially created The Coca-Cola Company.
Before Dr. Pemberton died in 1888, he sold parts of the business with majority of it to Asa G. Candler an Atlanta businessman. Under Candler’s leadership, Coca‑Cola distribution grew to soda fountains beyond Atlanta. And because of the
A well-respected Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton believed in the health benefits of the coca leaf and kola nut, and introduced the southeast to a concoction that he named French Wine Coca . However, prohibition threatened the wine-based concoction and Pemberton feverishly experimented with his base formula to comply with the prohibition laws. Pemberton would often provide samples to a local pharmacy in Atlanta for “trial runs.” The “trial runs,” were necessary for Pemberton to gain approval from the general population to assure sales of his modified formula and in 1886 he gained their approval. Pemberton’s business partner, Frank Robinson, named and branded the product. However, Coca-Cola was not advertised or sold as a soft drink. Originally it was advertised and sold as a cure all drink.
