Joseph Hwang’s career with sports wasn’t something he had always planned on and worked towards. The Senior Manager of Fan Development and Marketing for the Anaheim Ducks first got his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California San Diego in 2001. The University of California San Diego is known as one of the world’s top 15 research schools, and while there, Hwang was involved with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. With that degree, he worked for Logic Devices for one and a half years working on a team that was designing a circuit used in high definition televisions. In March of 2002 his career took a turn towards sports when he became a buyer for Just Sports USA. His job there was to purchase inventory for 20 east coast stores based on “market preferences, customer purchase habits, and the daily changes in the sports landscape” (Hwang, n.d.). This could make it difficult to come up with new ideas for fan development in the future. However, our communities are always changing. Right now it might be best to target the youth demographic, but in 10 or 20 years there might be a whole new group of people that have not been exposed to the sport in a way that would connect them with it. Maybe by the time I graduate and work my way up to a senior manager there will be a larger amount of immigrants that I could focus on. Or there is a greater outcry for programs geared towards women. Maybe what was once working is no longer enough and new developments and programs need to be made. With the NHL celebrating its centennial and gaining more and more attention from sports fans every year, there is a huge possibility that there will new demographics showing interest in the
