Three young men, dressed in crisp white shirts and black pants, walked up to a dark blue door, and rang the doorbell. Chimes echoed cheerfully in the house and within a few seconds, a middle-aged woman stepped onto the porch. After talking for a few minutes, she kindly declined their pamphlets and wished them a good day. Similarly, on the other side of this town, a tall man stood with a microphone on the street corner, preaching to the passersby. Some gave him a disgusted scowl while others walked slower to hear what he had to say. Both missionaries, one Mormon and the other Evangelical Christian, desired to share their message, but many people often wonder about the difference between these two messages. These two belief systems have many principles in common, but they also have gross differences. Knowing these differences will enable the reader to establish a clear stance on either belief. …show more content…
Since most readers will have a basic understanding of the Christian history, we will focus primarily on Mormon history. Early in Joseph Smith’s life, an angel named Moroni instructed him to travel to the Americas to find an ancient document, which Joseph would later translate into English. It contained various prophesies and commandments and would become the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith observed that the church had fallen from its fullness because the Gospel had not been preached correctly according to the principles in the Book, so following the translation of the Book of Mormon, he preached his new theology and thus restored the Church to its fullness. The re-established church practiced and held the same principles as the Church that Jesus Christ taught. With this basic history in mind, these seemingly similar faiths look quite
Two of these denominations were the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the African Methodist Episcopal. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - commonly known as Mormons was founded by Joseph Smith; he was inspired to create a new church faction by the revivals he experienced in the western area of New York called the "Burned Over District-" implying it had been "scorched" by so many revivals. Although not regarded as a splinter off from an existing Protestant denomination but a restoration of primitive Christianity having distinctive post-biblical doctrines, the Mormon Church is now a flourishing, worldwide denomination. On the other hand, during the revivals, Baptists and Methodists converted large numbers of blacks. However, because of the mistreatment they received from their fellow believers, under the leadership of Richard Allen, the black population broke away from the Methodist church while creating their own denomination; the African Methodist Episcopal.10 Both churches mentioned above, having developed and sprouted out other denominations over the years, still stand even today.

People and religion are a part of everyday life. The world is sure to be empty without the existence of God’s creation. When people and religion are viewed as different, the history, beliefs, and practice are formed unrealistically by outsider, more so than an insider. In an interview with a LDS, the author attempts to write and summarize a Mormon‘s journey through life with God and others.
Although many will claim reading the scriptures and saying prayers are the “primary answers” to any situation, I want to share with you how I have found studying the Book of Mormon is one of “The Primary Answers” to protection and lasting conversion in our lives. The fiery darts of the adversary have little or no effect upon us when we begin a serious study of the Book of Mormon; we are protected through the promises of the Lord who said “whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction” (1 Nephi 15:24). We are also promised by a modern day prophet, Ezra Taft Benson, “There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path.” (Ezra Taft Benson, October 1986, Ensign) There is no other path to true conversion and staying on the path which leads us to the tree of eternal life and that of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Mormon service I visited, had a few similarities but also a few distinct differences from the Catholic service that I am used to. Before this particular Sunday, I had never attended a Mormon service, nor had I spoken to anyone who believed in Mormonism or the “Latter Day Saints.” With that being said, I was welcomed much more openly than I had originally thought. Before entering, I was approached by two members of the church; two young women (sisters) between the ages of roughly 19 to 22. I arrived about an hour before service, that way I could ask a few people some questions, but the two girls beat me to the punch. They initially asked me if I had visited before and I responded saying that it was my first time, and I was attending as a student observer, with no intention of converting, but would love to learn about the faith. They nodded and proceeded to explain to me the reasons as to why they believed so strongly, and also a bit of background information on the faith. One of the girls, explained to me that there has been a lot of skepticism about Mormonism due in part to the fact that Joseph Smith Jr, was so young and how his explanation of “Moroni” (An angel no one had ever heard of), and his entire religion and the scripture used, “Book of Mormon,” could have just been a part of his imagination. The other girl told me how she was beginning to lose faith a couple years back, but she then regained it, after she experienced her own tests, and was able to get passed her
First it is important to know why the Mormons decided to move west after they were forced to leave Nauvoo.
For my Book of Mormon 121 class, I wanted to choose a lesson that could possibly help me prepare for a mission. We only have one boy in our family and he is the very last of 7 children. My three older sisters didn’t go on a mission and I was confused when I had the sudden urge and desire to do so. I thought it was just curiosity, to fit in with the new norm of woman going on a mission, and therefore have not done anything serious to pursue those feelings. “But it came to pass that whosoever did not belong to the church of God began to persecute those that did belong to the church of God, and had taken upon them the name of Christ. (1:19). I will be applying the scripture block Alma 1:19-26 which describes how the people of the Church had to face many trials in order to test their faith.
The Mormon religion is very unique in many of its doctrine. While technically a Protestant faith, the Mormons generally share more doctrine with the Catholics. Because of its unique nature, I will be analyzing the Mormon faith, its history, organization, and doctrine, in comparison with the beliefs held by both Catholics and Protestants.
Even though Mormons and biblical teaching agree on some things about Christ. There are still many differences between biblical teaching and Mormon belief. Mormons turn to John 1:1-2 to prove their theology that Christ was born into a preexisting realm and Christ is literally the Son of God. John 1:1-2 says that, “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with the God
Throughout the world, there are thousands and thousands of world religions. Each of these world religion is unique and distant from one another, however, there are various religions that have similar aspects to each other since people creating new religions that are a modified version of an old religion. In Mormonism and Buddhism, both religions have differences and similarities to one another such as their beliefs, practices, and wedding ritual.
Having doubt and questioning the doctrines of the gospel is not wrong as long as we pursue the answers to those doubts and questions. A testimony will grow through the Holy Ghost as we seek the answers to our doubt. Satan tries to plant doubt in our hearts and make us question the teaching of the gospel to lead us away, and he succeeds at times. If we do not act on those doubts and questions, then he wins, and that is what could make it wrong.
In U.S history class, we did an assignment about past reformers and how they altered history. It was a randomized topic and Grecia got Joseph Smith. We were talking about what topic really stood out in history and we started think of a person who could have possibly stood up for history. Grecia remembered doing a reformer project about Joseph Smith and from then on we knew he was the best topic. Joseph Smith’s contribution to history really struck our interest and it became one of our topics. His contribution to changing the way people look at religion. A religion that started from him made people changed the way they look at life. The movement Joseph Smith affected individuals on how they view life. The history of religions would not be the
There are many opinions and philosophies concerning the dissemination of the Gospel. Some believe that spreading the Gospel is unnecessary because God chooses a select few to be saved, and that these “elect” are unable to resist God’s grace. Others teach that “lifestyle evangelism” is the correct method of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Still others believe that the proper approach of sharing the Gospel is through door-to-door soul winning and through preaching and teaching in the church. One person’s approach to the Gospel that has been widely debated is that of Anne Marbury Hutchinson. Anne was born to a clergyman influenced by the Puritan leaders. Francis Marbury, Anne’s father, disagreed with the church of England and got into trouble with the Anglican leaders on separate occasions. Her father taught Anne the Bible, as a result she received a better education than most of the girls in her time.
As with any religion, one of the most important pieces to learn is how the religion was created and who played an important part in doing so. Mormonism, also known as the Church of the Latter-Day Saints came about in 1830. Mormonism was founded by Joseph Smith, in the 19th century in Western New York. This was a major period of religious awakening for America. When Joseph was only 14 years old, he asked God for guidance, as he was confused with the direction his faith was headed. Shortly after asking for guidance, he declared he had a vision that was accompanied with a visit from the Father, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ whom told him that all religions were wrong, and he was not to
