Jumping The Gun On Gun Control The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The right to bear arms is not just a right given to American citizens by our forefathers, it is a God given right. In response to recent mass murders involving firearms, gun control advocates have heightened the urgency to increase gun control laws. Ever since Eve took a bite of the forbidden apple, evil has existed in the world, however it is of paramount importance to realize who the real culprits of these evils are; guns are not to blame. Just as spoons do not make people fat and pencils do not do math problems wrong, guns do not kill people. People kill people. According to Steve Nolan, Co-Founder of SurvivalWeek.com and publisher of The Beacon, American gun owners use their guns almost 2.5 million times per year to ward off criminal attacks. Often times, a gun does not even have to be fired to scare away an attacker. In the event of a robbery, most criminals will flee simply at the threat of being shot. We continually hear about the evil that guns cause and the detriment to society that gun owners are, however, the media fails to mention the tremendous amount of lives saved by guns being used defensively. When 2.5 million lives are saved annually as opposed to the 11,000 lost annually due to gun related homicides, it is clear that
Gun control is an extremely controversial issue in the United States, and the debates around this topic has started many decades ago. According to the article “Gun Rights vs. Gun control” by Brianna Gurciullo, these debates are fueled by the people who defend the gun rights and the people who advocate in favor of gun control. It has been difficult to prove that gun ownership is directly related to an increase in violence due to the fact that researches tend to disagree on the impact of gun ownership in the American society. These debates tend to be brought to the spotlight whenever there is a mass shooting in the United States, which according to Abbey Oldham, who is a reporter from the PBS News Hour, happens quite frequently. However, organizations, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), defend that the laws for gun control violate the Second Amendment of the constitution, which states “the right of the people to keep and bear arms” stated Gurciullo. Due to the distinct interpretations of the constitution and the difficulty to agree on the best approach to tackle the issue, this controversy seem to be almost unsolvable.
In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since it’s birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, hunt for food and engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and gun control is complex. Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Those parties in favor of gun ownership and the freedom to use and keep arms, rely on the fact that the provision for such rights is enshrined in their constitution. In this climate of
Guns and weaponry have always been a major part of the cultures of the world since the beginning of time. For the United States of America, gun use can be traced back to the colonial days, our revolutionary roots. They have helped the United States turn the table specifically in times of dire need such as the Revolutionary War. Not only have advances in weaponry influenced the U.S., they have also helped to shape events across the globe. In 1791, this was understood by the Founding Fathers while writing the Constitution, which can be seen in the Second Amendment: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”[1]. With the advancement of guns specifically, there has been a rise in mass shootings, casualties, crime and controversy that has begun to split the United States. All a person has to do is turn on the television to a news channel, and at any given time, heartache, most often linked to guns, can be found. Some cry for a need for better gun regulation or sometimes complete abolishment for recreational use, while others cling to their weapons with claim of self-defense and economic profit. Violent crimes have been on the rise years; there has been an estimated 1.2 billion crimes of violence that occurred in the United States alone [2]. One thing is certain: gun trade and regulation boosts the economy. Last year, 301,
In America, the average amount of people shot per year is 100,000; over ten thousand defenseless people are murdered. The Second Amendment’s proclamation that “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” has been an extensive topic of debate. Moreover, the amendment has been one of many debates over the several years throughout America. The discussion of gun control is often debated as to whether or not it is morally right to legally bypass the Second Amendment to avoid unlawful uses of arms. The Second Amendment allows citizens to carry firearms specifically for protection, gun control hinders that right and places civilians’ lives in danger. In short, the U.S. government’s intrusive restrictions on gun laws prevent law-abiding citizens from defending themselves with firearms.
America is the most well armed nation in the world, with American citizens owning about 270 million of the world’s 875 million firearms (Marshall). Indeed, this is more than a quarter of the world’s registered firearms. The reason why Americans own so many guns is because of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Rauch) This amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to have firearms. Since this amendment is relatively vague, it is up for interpretation, and is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws. Hence, gun control is a frequently discussed controversial topic in
In the light of the recent, tragic incidents of gun violence in the United States, such as those in San Bernardino and Las Vegas, the controversial issue of gun control has rekindled the grand debate of whether or not the government should enact stronger restrictions on guns to protect the public. This issue in recent years has become quite contentious as public opinion has balanced out to nearly 50/50. While restricting firearms may seem like a good idea at first, as it limits the availability of the irascible weapons, the proposals shouldn’t be made into law because they would infringe the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms” and result in an increasingly violent society, where one
The issue of gun control has come up recently as an important decision opportunity for our country. Many people are asking whether guns really are the helpful tool that many of us have been saying they are, or if they are the killing machines they have recently been publicized as. Gun Control: The Great Cop-out by Jared Machaud and Gun Control and the Constitution by David B. Rivkin Jr. and Andrew M. Grossman effectively display the anti-gun control side of this discussion; whereas The Second Amendment is all for Gun Control by Adam Winkler and Making Gun Control Happen by Patrick Radden Keefe display the pro-gun control side. In my views, guns are a helper in a time of crisis when help is too far away, or unwilling to come. Rather than put more restrictions on guns and gun owners, we should maintain the ability to protect ourselves and our fellow Americans through the use of firearms.
As many as 30 Americans will be shot dead today. It is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States. According to a recent study, the gun homicide rate in the United States is 25 times higher than in other wealthy countries (guardian.com). Sadly, most Americans are divided on whether the country should enforce stricter gun laws. Many, especially the Liberals, feel as though having firmer gun laws would significantly reduce the number deaths caused by gunshot. In contrast, the Conservatives feel that passing stricter gun laws would do little to change the behavior of criminals who commit violent crimes. The Second Amendment to the Constitution gives all citizens the right to bear arms, yet perhaps the true meaning of
Did you know that there are approximately 4.5 million firearms sold in the United States each year, and an estimated 2 million second hand firearms are sold each year? (USA Gun Violence Statistics) According to the IANSA (International Action Network on Small Arms of the United Nations), in the United States there are more than ten thousand gun homicides annually (IANSA). These statistics should shock every American. I believe the argument may be summed up by looking at this issue from three perspectives, 1) tighter gun ownership laws have yet to reduce gun violence anywhere they have been enacted, 2) the right for people to defend themselves is paramount, and 3) it is a right provided by the second amendment of the constitution,
More than seven out of eight people in the United States own one or more guns (“Gun Control”). If the United States does not support and protect gun rights, then we will lose them and will be a step towards tyranny. In order to protect our freedoms and our individual safety, the nation needs to continue to protect our right to keep and bear arms. The nation needs to look at the outcomes of past societies with strict gun control. The United States also needs to look at the rights that some are trying to get rid of because they think it will help with the crime rate when really it will actually have the reverse effect. The nation needs to fight for the citizens’ freedoms and defend the Second Amendment,
Thomas Jefferson said, "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Gun control laws are, still to this day, a huge issue in the United States. There is constant debate on how we solve this problem. With multiple arguments on solutions to this topic, many gray-zones follow. What makes this subject hard to tackle is that it “revolves around three major talking points: a sociological, an ethical, and a legal dimension,” (Stingl & Alexander). The sociological part is establishing if gun laws will help reduce violence rates. The ethical point goes against the citizens “right to bear arms against the protection of citizens and prevention or crime,” (Stingl & Alexander). In addition, the legal stance is determining the interpretation of the Second amendment in regards to “well-regulated militias”. With multiple areas to covers, the solution to this problem is more complex.
Every day, there are numerous armed robberies, and from time to time, the next massacre manages to take the lives of innocent people. Many people accuse guns of being the culprit for these horrific events, but the truth is, it 's the deranged society we live in today. Many people would propose that guns should be outlawed in America, but prohibiting guns will not stop gun violence any more than outlawing drugs keep them from entering the country 's border and spreading throughout the streets of the entire nation. If the nation abolishes guns, people are only leaving themselves defenseless against the conniving criminals that will continue to get their hands on them. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution states, "A well
It’s becoming a daily news event; another mass shooting where innocent lives are taken by a crazed gunman. It occurs so often that these news stories seem to just be part of the nightly news programs we are used to seeing. Yet, the repeating theme in all these stories is none of the victims had the means to defend themselves by way of a firearm. There is never mention of any of these innocent victims having been shot while having a gun in their possession. These stories never end with the assailant being shot by one of those he tried to murder just minutes before. If more Americans would exercise their Second Amendment rights to own and bear arms, there would be less violent crimes in the United States that involve guns.
Nearly 10,150 people have died and 20,647 have been injured because of causes related to guns in 2015 so far. Furthermore there have been around 266 mass shootings in the United States. In consequence to all of these deaths and injuries caused by guns ,the topic of gun rights has slowly become one of the most popular and controversial topics in today 's society. The big problem is that the nation is split when it comes to opinions on gun rights. Some believe that it is a constitutional right to be able to bear guns in order to protect themselves and their loved ones . Others believe that citizens shouldn 't be able to carry weapons because it just leads to problems. Gun control is a huge issue in the United States and should be addressed promptly.
There is an ongoing debate whether there should be a gun control law implemented. Everyone has their own point of view when it comes to having an opinion if guns are a beneficial or if they are not. Those that are for it would give all the right reasons on why and how gun control should be allowed. On the other hand, there are those that are completely against gun control and have reasons why it should be not be permitted. Mass majority of people that are in favor of not implementing gun control law claim that, having a gun provides them protection that they are not getting from other sources. In the midst of all the chaos of gun control, at least there are only two opposing sides: the pros and the cons that
