I’m pretty sure Craig Spencer felt the exact same way when he ate at a public restaurant, rode the subway, and went bowling in Brooklyn and look where that has gotten him. Troops who are returning from West Africa are being quarantined just like the astronauts of Apollo 11 were quarantined and no one thinks or thought any less of them for doing so. I believe that it is more heroic of them to have taken the necessary precautions to protect even more people than they already have rather than to just puff out their chests and say they’re invincible. In an article called “Ebola-Quarantine Objections are Frivolous,” Law Professor Eugene Kontorovich elaborated on the fact that courts have continuously advocated for quarantines for infectious diseases like tuberculosis and smallpox.
“He notes that in a case presenting facts more favorable to the complaining plaintiff than Ms. Hickox’s, a federal court upheld a two-week quarantine of a person who had visited an area infected with smallpox (a markedly less lethal disease than Ebola, and one about which more was known), even though (A) the plaintiff, like Hickox, was asymptomatic and (B) there was no proof that the plaintiff had

She didn’t give notice to the people in the United States that she could potentially infect. She didn’t refer to her fellow citizens when she decided whether they would or would not be comfortable with her coming back from Africa after having contact with the lethal virus without taking necessary precautions. I think the quarantine is a great idea and it should be strictly implemented. I agree with the article from nationalreview.com that the objections to the quarantine are frivolous and unnecessary. Hopefully all skeptics can open their eyes to the danger of the virus and be a little more open minded when it comes to our efforts to keep it
expression of an opinion. The dissent in the case Tinker v. Des Moines can be reasoned that there
In her book, Pox Americana, Elizabeth A. Fenn takes on the challenge of writing about a little-known topic with large gaps in the existing research. Fenn states in the foreword that the previous research about smallpox focused on specific locations, "often with vague but tantalizing references to a larger background pandemic." I commend Fenn on her attempt to write about that large epidemic and I think that she successfully combined the facts and figures that spanned an entire hemisphere into her book.
Nicholas Carr Claimed that the internet affects our information processing. Carr backed up his argument by speaking with a wide array of educated and reputable people like friends, colleagues, a blogger, GMU and a professor making his argument validity greater. Carr admits that he and his friends also; have the same problem by saying that he was appealing to emotions by using Ethos.
The transmission of the smallpox was yet another unavoidable disease that was constantly contracted. “The Negroes are so incident to the smallpox that few ships that carry them escape without it.” (Document B) “pain in the head, back, shivering, vomiting, fever, etc.” (Document B) Due to the small living conditions, diseases, such as the Smallpox, were easily transmitted and passed throughout the
What is smallpox? The internet has defined it as an “acute contagious immune disease, with fever and pustules (small bumps on the skin filled with pus) that will usually will leave scars.” Smallpox originated in India and Egypt over 3,000 years ago. After that it slowly started to progress to other areas across the world. It then started to show itself in places like Africa, Europe and then after a few years later, finally made it’s way into the Americas during the 1500’s.
Hi Constance, this appears to be a straw man argument, or an argument to refute an argument not advanced by an opponent. In other words, is the feeling you’ve failed as a parent because you have a gay child really that prevalent in our society? Personally, I don’t know because I don’t have a gay child, but my intuition tells me I would feel disappointed; not for me, but for my child because their life might be more difficult since it’s outside the norm. Moreover, I assume this is probably the more common reaction, versus a feeling of guilt (i.e. codependence), which is an understandable sentiment. Having several close gay friends throughout my life, I’ve never understood why people are so sensitive about it. It doesn’t bother me in any way
Imagine a quick spreading rash throughout the entire body, leaving not a single space behind; every opening and crevice in your body, including your mouth and eyes covered in painful bumps accompanied by high fever and severe body aches. Flat red spots transforming into fluid-filled lesions and soon oozing out yellow pus, evidently emitting a pungent odor to anyone who dared get close. The live virus present in the darkening crusty scabs that would soon fall off only to leave behind a deep pitted scarred filled complexion on anyone who was fortunate enough to survive. These scars would be forever remembered as the hallmark for the smallpox epidemic which tormented the world for over 3,000 years. (Riedel “Deadly Diseases”).
Smallpox is a viral disease that causes pus-filled boils on the dermis. It looks similar to chickenpox, but has certain characteristic differences. Unlike chickenpox, smallpox is lethal in 30% of the cases and leaves the victim with disfiguring scars and/or blindness. Smallpox has now been eradicated through aggressive vaccination. The last case was reported in Somalia in the late 1970’s. After 2 years of worldwide surveillance, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that the disease had been eradicated.
There is an art to music that is unlike anything else. Given that a person ahs no impairment that causes them to be unable to make or listen to it, it is the one thing, no matter the sound that every human can relate to. We dance, we sing, we just simply enjoy the melody of any tune. In the case of. Despite my never being born in Trinidad, I have always liked and related to. Perhaps that is why I chose to play this instrument that originated from where my parents are from. It is my belief that music is the one concept that has no color, and no discrimination that brings people together for the sake of enjoying music and having a good time
The world’s last naturally acquired case of smallpox occurred in Somalia, in 1977. In 1980 smallpox became the world’s first eradicated disease. The main component that led to smallpox’s eradication was the development of an effective vaccine; Edward Jenner developed the world’s first vaccine. Smallpox is no longer a threat due to three reasons: 1) there is an effective vaccine 2) its a lytic virus 3) there is no animal reservoir. This paper will discuss a variety of factors that played a role in eliminating smallpox: 1) is easier to contain as a zoonosis 2) is a crowd disease (spreads at a slower rate through human contact with larger populations) 3) as a lytic virus, it has an incubation period
Do you think it’s unethical to quarantine individuals in order to protect and stop the spread of diseases?
Sue Jozui in her passage, argues that she does not want to use celebrities to advertise products. Jozui supports her argument by first giving examples of celebrities endorsing products she continues by stating that the marketing is insulting to buyers. The authors purpose is to convince buyers to boycott celebrity advertised products in order to make rules and guidelines for advertisers. The author establishes an objective tone for buyers. While Jozui thinks it's not okay to use celebrities, businesses have the right to market how they wish.
In sum, Cow flu can also be a danger to someones life and if it's inoculation is untested or harmful to other human lives it's not a wise decision to be vaccinated by those . It's job of administration to keep the people safe from the disease like this by making them aware of the vaccination and also no to use them if they can be harmful to human
In the discussion of Yohei Fujita, I could clarify many doubts. He spoke about many issues which are very important for every one of the students that were present. He shared with us his experiences about how were the process of adaptation in college, and everything he had learned about it. Fujita commented that the first semester was difficult because all this experiences was something new for hem, believe it or not that first semester he failed MAC 1105, but he never gives up and with the help of the teachers, and studying a lot he managed to get ahead. He said that he assimilated everything, but it took some time, since he had never done so many tasks in his life. Fujita gave us many advices in which I totally agreed. He told us that is
SECOND POINT: Although an outbreak in America is highly unlikely, the fact that Ebola has been diagnosed on American soil brings fear to all. Because of its infectiousness and long incubation period, and the banality of early symptoms, it can be difficult to track and contain. We also do not have a cure for this disease, sure we have experimental drugs, but nothing official. The spread has been much quicker in this outbreak than others, affecting both urban and rural areas. Usual protective measures to prevent the spread appear to be less effective in this epidemic. What ebola does to the human body defies reason and is something like out of a horror movie, not a text book. Americans feel hopeless and vulnerable because Ebola is here. The victim who flew from Liberia to Dallas, Texas on September 30th of this year did expose others and there is a risk of it spreading. The Ebola virus is the most terrifying and least-understood virus known to man. We are witnessing the onset of a deadly mutation anticipated and feared for almost four decades. Americans have watched fully informed and trained health care workers contract Ebola.
