Katharine Brush uses literary techniques in Birthday Party to convey the sense of helplessness an abused person feels in an abusive relationship. Smith-Yackel’s essay illustrates the grieving process while on a phone call with the Social Security Office to collect potential benefits from her mother's passing. While placed on hold, she reflects the life her mother had lived. During this period of reflection, this is when Smith-Yackel exemplifies the use of imagery within a narrative. She creates vivid images about the hardships her mother once faced. For instance, when her mother and father first got married, they began farming. Farming created a wide variety of new tasks, “She carried water nearly a quarter of a mile from the well to fill her wash boilers in order to do her laundry on a scrub board” (Smith-Yackel 115). Her mother had to not only become physically fit but mentally fit in order to take on the challenges their farm created. Her mother was relentless in making sure her children were well taken care of. In another section of the narrative, imagery is used once again to show the sacrifices her mother made. Smith-Yackel states, “In the winter, she sewed night after night, endlessly, begging cast-off clothing from relatives, ripping apart coats, dresses, blouses, and trousers to remake them to fit her four daughters son” (Smith-Yackel 116). Women are taught from a young age that marriage is the end all be all in happiness, in the short story “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin and the drama “Poof!” by Lynn Nottage, we learn that it is not always the case. Mrs. Mallard from “The Story of an Hour” and Loureen from “Poof!” are different characteristically, story-wise, and time-wise, but share a similar plight. Two women tied down to men whom they no longer love and a life they no longer feel is theirs. Unlike widows in happy marriages Loureen and Mrs., Mallard discover newfound freedom in their respective husband’s deaths. Both stories explore stereotypical housewives who serve their husbands with un-stereotypical reactions to their husband’s deaths.
Point of view is the narrator’s position in the story being told. Point of view changes the story drastically, since you are hearing different stories and opinions by different characters in a story. Even if the plot is the same, the point of view will change the entire story. Point of view can also create tension between different characters. For example, if you are hearing the thoughts of one character in the story, and the actions of another character who is aware of these rude thoughts, the reader knows that the two characters tension between each other will eventually rise up to a certain point that a problem will occur. In the short story, “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros, a young child named Rachel experienced her eleventh birthday in a classroom. As the story progresses there is a change in the tone- from nonchalant to sadness to anger. Cisneros uses various forms of figurative language throughout “Eleven”, such as repetition, metaphors and similes, and symbolism.
At the beginning of the story, Brush describes the couple as “unmistakably married,” and the woman is described as being “fadingly pretty.” Although it is clear that the two are indeed in a relationship, the description of the woman reveals that she once was beautiful, but now in a much more lackluster way; a way that Brush implies may have been more vibrant in the past. Despite the fact that there is no doubt the couple is married, Brush draws a subtle parallel between the woman’s faded appearance and her relationship with her husband, insinuating that it is time-worn and only bound to grow weaker in the future. Her clothes are out of date.” The clothes are not only showing the change of appearance, but are used as a symbol for showing the small and large sacrifices that are made when having children. Because of her clothes you are able to identify the clear loss in vanity and pride that she has in herself. Not only does this line indicate this but when read in conjunction with the line “From his neat head unquestionably rises” it shows the juxtaposition of the two different lives of two ex-lovers. “His neat head” suggests that his well put together, acting as a symbol for who he is appearance wise. In the short story “The School,” written by Donald Barthelme, many different literary devices are being utilize like order of events, phraseology, point of view etc. The literary device that stands out the most in the short story “The School” is point of view. Barthelme uses point of view by making the teacher the story teller which gives the story a different mood than it would if it was told from a distinct perspective. Point of view is a position or perspective from which something is considered or evaluated (Merriam-Webster, n.d.)Barthelme’s use of point of view leads to the interpretation of the story in a totally unusual way which makes the story much less creepy than it should be.

Not everyone appreciates hind gestures, and in “Birthday Party” by Katharine Rush, she depicts the story of a couple who are at a restaurant, planning a surprise for the husband, but the husband is anything but grateful. Rush effectively tells this story to emphasize the oppression women faced in the 1940s, despite doing all they can to be nice by describing the scene in such a way to emphasize the mood shift, using imagery to depict the scene as cruel, and describing the scene through the point of view of someone who was watching in the restaurant.
