In this assignment, I have had the opportunity to read through many different articles all pertaining to abortion. Some addressed abortion options, other discussed arguments from many different views, others show how the law was broken and many others. Kathleen Parker felt there was no point debating on whether young girls should be sexually active. She said that Plan B gives the girls freedom that they don’t need and takes away parent’s authority. I agree, and I think you should still need to see a doctor to get a prescription for Plan B. I don’t know if it would help though as much as she thinks it would. I don’t see the benefit of them having to see a doctor, if they want to be sexually active they will do so no matter what their parents
Abortion has been a heated debate in the United States for decades. Since before the ruling on Roe v. Wade, it is clear that this is an issue that is far from ever being decided upon. Between those who are pro-life and those who are pro-choice, scholars from both sides work on disproving the morality of the other side. With the evolution of abortion laws and regulation through the decades, it is difficult to imagine the United States without conflict pertaining to abortion. Despite pro-life and pro-choice agendas, the country is in ever-changing opinion when it comes to abortion.
Abortion’s legalization through Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade, has allowed for one in three pregnancies to end in abortion. This means that 1.5 million abortions are performed in the United States each year (Flanders 3). It ranks among the most complex and controversial issues, arousing heated legal, political, and ethical debates. The modern debate over abortion is a conflict of competing moral ideas and of fundamental human rights: to life, to privacy, to control over one's own body. Trying to come to a compromise has proven that it one cannot please all of the people on each side of the debate.
Abortion is an issue that can go both ways and a topic that is very controversial. Is a fetus a human? Does its life matter? Or it wasn’t supposed to happen to me or I was raped. Many people can think of abortion as a good and bad thing, it just depends on what the person’s intuition about abortion is. I decided to go with the topic over abortion because I feel it is a broad topic and can go two ways as in being defensive or immortal. During this topic over abortion I will be including two articles, “A Defense of Abortion” and “Why Abortion Is Immoral”. These articles will explain the difference in how they think abortion can be taken. For instance, the first article will talk about why Judith argues why abortion is not too bad to be allowed
Abortion has been a complex social issue in the United States ever since restrictive abortion laws began to appear in the 1820s. By 1965, abortions had been outlawed in the U.S., although they continued illegally; about one million abortions per year were estimated to have occurred in the 1960s. (Krannich 366) Ultimately, in the 1973 Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade, it was ruled that women had the right to privacy and could make an individual choice on whether or not to have an abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. (Yishai 213)
Abortion has been one of the biggest controversies of all time. Many people believe that women should get to decide what she would do with her body. The definition of abortion is; “The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth”. Abortion is one of the most controversial topics today. Although there are two sides of the debate pro-choice and pro life, arguments are mainly centered around the Roe v. Wade decision, women’s rights and state restrictive laws.
Throughout this semester, our class has discussed the morality of abortion. We have examined different philosophers’ positions on abortion and debated the pros and cons of each article. For my argument, I defined abortion as the deliberate removal of a fetus from the mother’s womb to result in the death of the fetus. My position on abortion was that it is morally permissible depending on if it’s what the mother wants, the child’s future wellbeing, and the circumstances of the pregnancy. After careful thought and consideration, I have changed some parts of my argument and kept others the same.
As of recently, the approval of the emergency contraceptive Plan B, for the use of girls as young as fifteen years old has stirred up quite some controversy (Belluck, 2013). Those who oppose it cite the diminishing moral values that this would impose on an already increasingly secular society. These individuals believe that having access to such a powerful substance would encourage young girls to engage in sexual promiscuity without any fear of repercussion (Belluck, 2013). However, proponents of this new law argue that giving full access to fifteen year old girls would discourage them from becoming pregnant at such an early age and gives them the opportunity to make wise decisions about their bodies. Aside from the two strongly opposing sides to this dilemma, the actual nature of the dilemma stems from the ease with which these young girls would be able to access the emergency contraceptive drug. Before the new law came into place, the emergency contraceptive was only available through the prescription of a doctor and could only be accessed through a pharmacist (Aleccia, 2013). With the new law, anyone fifteen or older would be able to access and purchase the drug over-the-counter. Granting such access to girls who may at times not be fully aware of the consequences of their actions is the nature of the dilemma.
In Americas Society Abortion is a topic that most people rather not face. More and more abortions occur everyday, causing potential lives to be terminated due to irresponsible sexual activity among adults and teens. Abortions cheats the unborn child of his or hers existence and unknown experiences to come. Abortions are quick escape goats for irresponsible individuals and cause pain, suffering, and death. I t is against the law and immoral to kill another human being, and by terminating a fetus you are performing another act of killing. In my essay I will use different articles and references to back my conclusion of how Abortions are cruel, examples of different types of abortions and how
The United States has been divided now over the issue of abortion for thirty-three years since the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade in 1973. As of today, over 45 million legal abortions have been performed in the United States. Pro-choice advocates hold these 45 million abortions as being 45 million times women have exercised their right to choose to get pregnant and to choose to control their own bodies. To pro-life, or anti-abortion, advocates these 45 million abortions constitute 45 million murders, a genocide of human life in the United States propagated by the court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade. The debate over abortion in the United States is thus a debate of two extremes. One side argues from the personal liberty of the mother. The
The morality of induced abortion is one of the most controversial moral issues of our time. Abortion has grown to be one, if no the most, debated argument of modern times. In the following web-page, we will be discussing abortion in three of its major aspects: Public Opinion, Congress and Courts, and Interest groups.
Plan B is a safe form of birth control that effectively prevent a pregnancy if the pill is taken within a 3 day period after having unprotected sex. By banning the age limit to access to emergency contraceptives more women will be able to prevent an unintended pregnancy. Unprotected sex sometimes happens, a condom breaks or the sex in non-consensual. When this happens a woman regardless of her age needs options and the Plan B is a viable, safe option. Research shows that teens understand how to use the Plan B pill and that they know that is not an option that is to be used regularly3. Emergency contraceptives helps teen to practice safe sex and to not be risky with their reproductive health. A study in the medical journal Pediatrics found that, “sexual activity is exceedingly rare among the youngest adolescent. When sex does occur among teens under 14 it is often non-consensual and contraceptives are not used.” Many people especially those opposed to minors having access to emergency contraceptive OTC are uncomfortable with the thought of their young child having unprotected sex and then buying and consuming a pill to prevent getting pregnant. Numerous studies have shown that opening access to
Just because abortion is legal in all fifty states it is not morally right because a fetus is technically still a person, killing is against the law, and it goes against God’s will for us to have the right to live. In 1973, the Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade changed the course of American history. The outcome of this case made abortion, “the termination of a pregnancy resulting in the death of the fetus,” legal in all fifty states (Abortion Facts). Abortion has become one of the most controversial topics in our nation, and is becoming a substantial issue (Sproul 47). Every abortion takes the life of a child, the most innocent of human beings. Not only does an abortion kill the fetus, but the procedure itself is very gruesome and can cause pain to the child or the mother (Abortion facts). On average, there are around 700,000 abortions per year in the United
I don’t think there’s any argument that abortion is one of the most controversial issues with no middle ground for agreement. If we review the Biological Benchmark of our text, we can see the many different stages of fetal development and help us determine when a fetus is due human rights. Just like the benchmark, Dr. Parker believes that an egg and sperm are alive but disagrees that development is created at time of fertilization. Dr. Parker believes that creating life is a process. It is not something that just happens. Parker’s medical opinion is that a fetus could not feel any pain until about twenty-nine weeks. If we differ back to the fetal development chart of the benchmark, the twenty-five to twenty-eight weeks mark is just where the
For my final paper I have decided to do a on the ethical and controversial issue of abortion. In this report I will cover both sides of the abortion issue. I will summarize the stands of both Pro-Life advocates and Pro-Choice, by presenting arguments from organizations, authors, and journal articles from each side. As well as give a brief history on abortion and a look at the laws that govern this issue not only here at home but around the world. In conclusion of my report I will give my views on the issue and on which side of the fence my beliefs put me on. So lets begin.
Our society is filled with numerous ethical dilemmas. We are consistently bombarded with ethical issues daily. At times, these ethical dilemmas are virtually impossible to unravel. I believe the topic of abortion is one of the most difficult and controversial issues in today’s society. It is also the one people are most passionate about as it continues to be scrutinized by two groups, holding fast to different perspectives; Pro-Life versus Pro-Choice.
