With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. ‘I volunteer!’ I gasp. ‘I volunteer as tribute!’”, Katniss Everdeen cries from the back of the crowd at the reaping. Primrose, her younger sister, had just been chosen, and Katniss knew that she must step up, in order to keeps her sister and mother safe. Throughout the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen trains and fights for life or death, which causes her to learn a lesson about perseverance. Ultimately, this lesson is important to the work as a whole because Katniss Everdeen becomes a character that makes it out alive of the gruesome games. Katniss Everdeen begins to be a determined women at the start of the hunger games, where trains and prepares for her journey. At one of the opening ceremonies, Katniss wore an outfit that was on fire. This gained Katniss much love across the games, which helped her push through the games and persevere. Next, Katniss says, “I stand there, feeling broken and small, thousands of eyes trained on me. There’s a long pause. Then, from somewhere in the crowd, someone whistles Rue’s four-note mocking-jay tune. The one that meant safety in the arena.” Katniss feels so loved here, and although Rue died, it helped her move forwards and be determined during the hunger games. Lastly, it says that “At first one, then another, then almost every member of the crowd touches the three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips and holds it out to me. It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love.” People admired Katniss for what she did during the hunger games. She learned a huge lesson about perseverance as she tried to stay
