The Kelley Honor Code means to me a set of guiding principles by which to prejudge my actions, and fellow academic candidates as we represent the Kelley School of Business and more broadly, the Indiana University. Accepting the code of honor is to conduct myself with a sense of rectitude and integrity. The acceptance of the Kelley Honor Code will require me to analyze my actions to ensure they are in agreement with the principles within the code. I am expected to treat all members of staff and faculty with the upmost respect as well as fellow students. By carefully choosing my language and expression when communicating I demonstrate my regard to their feelings by avoiding any negative or demeaning words or phrases. These actions and responsibilities are not limited to verbal communication and are expected to extend to any correspondence in and out of the classroom and within virtual communication including email, social media, and websites. I will interact through email and forums with the same professionalism used within the classroom. I acknowledge failure to demonstrate professionalism and retain strong moral principles is unacceptable. It is understood I will be held responsible for any acts committed against the moral standards implemented from and outlined by the Kelley Honor Code. …show more content…
All students are held to the same standards and are responsible for their actions I can expect to be treated with the same respect and honesty I give others. Because the standards are the same for all students any dishonest or immoral activity committed by another student witnessed must to be reported to the faculty of the IU Kelley School of Business as it is my duty to ensure the integrity of the school when accepting the Kelley Honor Code. Reporting these actions would be an obligation and failing to report these actions would be a violation of the code of
Teachers will inevitably be in contact with other professionals daily. It is always important to treat these professionals with respect. These professionals may include some of the following:
David brooks article “honor code” deals with boys in the education system having to conform to an unbalanced system that favors girls over them. The article “honor code” explains that the way the education system is made only fits a certain type of person,” The education system has become culturally cohesive, rewarding and encouraging a certain sort of person: one who is nurturing, collaborative, disciplined, neat, studious, industrious and ambitious. People who don’t fit this cultural ideal respond by disengaging and rebelling...many of the people who don't fit in are boys” (David Brooks) The education system only appeals to people with certain characteristics, the people who don't fit the systems ideal image are forced to conform or fail.
10. What is the Honor Code? What kind of actions would constitute a violation of the Honor Code?
In conclusion, the honor code system is one that is valuable in an environment in which it can thrive, (i.e. the presence of “honest” types, corporal punishment, etc.) and would benefit the school society in general, making students more honest and less susceptible to cheating and fraudulent
To establish a respectful professional relationship it’s important that we communicate well and offer each other help and support where needed. “You should use language that other adults (including parents/carers, colleagues, volunteers or students) are likely to understand, avoid using jargon or technical language unless you are sure they understand its meaning.”(T Kamen 2010 pg.71) Whether you are speaking to a colleague, parent/carer or someone from another profession it’s important that you are practical, you may be working with someone who is unfamiliar to the surroundings or need help to find things, also make sure you are informative, you may need to give information and support to someone regarding an issue or situation they know nothing about, act in a professional manner by demonstrating personal courtesy and integrity it’s never appropriate to “gossip” .Being Emotional have a sense of humour where appropriate being caring and understanding to peoples situation. Developing and promoting good effective relationships with the people you work with helps to maintain a positive learning environment for pupils, parents/carers and also staff.
The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of the students. However, the term ‘honor’ in the title ‘honor code’ is what people can occasionally take issue with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question the purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff’s Old School, exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance and that they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school’s honor code because he believes in a much more personal and valuable meaning of the word ‘honor’.
When working in school and speaking to others you need to be aware of others and be considerate towards their feelings, thinking about the way we communicate in different situations in school. Different ways you communicate depends on where you are in the school setting such as meetings, talking to a parent, talking in the staff room at dinner time and talking to the children. In all situations you need to be aware and read the schools policy for communication and make sure you follow it in school at all times. Communication in school could be speaking face to face, talking on the phone, letter, fax or email. We need to keep in mind the way we communicate with others and the way we present ourselves and the use of our body language and who we are communicating to. Make sure you bend down to a child’s eye level, make eye contact, but also remember that this may be uncomfortable for some, such as a child with additional needs or speech impairment. We can change the way we communicate with these children or adults by using picture cards or notes. The different cultures may communicate differently; you need to be aware of this.
If a college campus harbors an environent where cheating is seen as acceptable and an activity many people participate in, even students with correct morals and no desire to cheat themselves are less likely to report fellow students for unsavory behavior. This can also go a step further and that same student who failed to confront a peer for cheating, may give in to the school’s atmosphere and start cheating themselves. This makes them all the less likely to report other students for fear of appearing hypocritical and/or being reported themselves. A study on honor code effectiveness was completed by Sally Sledge and Pam Pringle at a small public university (Source E). Their results showed that only 8% of students would report a fellow student for cheating. Even more surprisingly, 40% of students anonymously stated that they had “violated the honor code and not been caught”. This points to a very cheater-friendly attitude at this particular school and shows that the honor system is not very effective in this
“Showing respect for your students includes listening to their needs and preserving their dignity. It also means living up to their expectations of you, such as greeting them at the beginning of class
Rules governing academic integrity among students and schools is a practice deeply entrenched in the American education system and that of those around the world. Likely beginning at the University of Virginia in the United States during 1842 as a way to discourage cheating, dishonesty, and plagiarism, it soon spread throughout the nation. Today, the overwhelming majority of schools in the US, from elementary to collegiate, have their own form of a honor code. Among these schools is Port Charlotte High School, PCHS abbreviated, whose own code of conduct is based heavily on students being educated about the effects that their cheating will have on their academic future and punishing those who are discovered to have cheated in any form. So far, these particular academic regulations have proven successful and because of this, the charge put forward by the school should continue to be maintained. Revising the Code of Conduct into a peer-enforced system creates is statistically inefficient, hostilities between students, and eliminating the honor code would easily produce a school where cheating reigns free.
It is important to establish appropriate behaviour and respect for others in order to fully realise the potential of all within and to ensure each student is safe from both physical and psychological harm. Appropriate behaviour must apply to both student and teacher. I, as a teacher, must follow a Code of Practice in order foster individual growth and learning. The principles of Good Practice are to treat people with care, respect and dignity. To recognise that I, as a teacher, am a trusted representative of my work place. I must ensure communication with students is open and clear and assess the risks to my students of the activities by carrying out a thorough risk assessment before each session.
More importantly, creating positive student-teacher relationships can prevent discipline issues from arising. By establishing a persistent tone of mutual respect, students will participate in class activities with confidence that they and their opinions are valued. Students also should be taught how to appreciate the unique contributions each student brings to the class, as well as how to effectively resolve issues that may arise. I believe that demonstrating genuine respect to students and showing interest in their concerns will allow the effective use of instructional time, positive relationships to prevail, and minimal discipline problems to avail.
Xavier’s Honor System will give me an opportunity to endure in many experiences. Even if the experiences are good or bad it will give me a chance to learn from my mistakes. By experiencing things I can learn more about myself. In college I have the freedom to do anything I want, but I shouldn’t take it lightly. The honor code will teach me not to have too much freedom and how to manage my time.
According to The International Centre for Academic Integrity honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage are the six fundamental values of academic integrity. From Erica’s viewpoint of the situation highlighted
“I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment.”
