Malcolm Gladwell defines an outlier as an individual who has accomplished so much in extraordinary circumstances compared to people with normal circumstance. Outliers are individuals that succeed in life despite the odds that are placed against them. However, Gladwell states in his nonfiction book Outliers: The Story of Success that the success of an outlier “is not exceptional or mysterious. It is grounded in a web of advantages and inheritances, some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky- but all critical to making them who they are. The outlier in the end is not an outlier at all,” (299).

As he stated, “[an outlier is] a place that lay outside everyday experience, where normal rules did not apply. Roseto was an outlier”. People and events that are outliers are essentially the same; they lay outside everyday people or events, where normal rules don’t apply. The meaning of outlier itself in relation to success symbolizes those who stand out with exceptional rates of success. The book does not necessarily cover how to become an outlier (in fact it first deams becoming an outlier is nearly impossible) but more which are the factors that have contributed to certain outliers in history on a broad spectrum of hockey players to the beatles to even the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates.

Tyra Banks was born on December 4, 1973, in Inglewood, California. She graduated from high school in 1991 and planned to go to Loyola Marymount University and study film. Unfortunately, before she even starts her classes, she discovered by a French modeling scout. Since an early age, she used to dress up in her mom clothes and pretended to be a model. And spend most of her time watching TV shows which are about fashion and styles. This opportunity opened doors to the success she owns. Now a day, If the name of fashion models mentioned, the first person that reaches to most of our minds is Tyra Banks. She is known for being a hugely rewarding model. While fashion holds the biggest part of her success, she continues to grow herself beyond that. Being an African American and being able to break the race barriers in the fashion industry, which was dominated by only whites makes her become an inspiration for lots of African American females.

And now, twenty something years later, her and her husband, have 2 children in ivy league schools, live in a $900,000 home. Quite an impressive story would like to have that kind of ambition, to be so successful.
