In this painting, a young African American policeman is sitting on the hood of a white police car in what appears to be a perplexed state of mind. The police car is magnified to only show the top half and front of the vehicle. The officer is positioned off to the right half of the painting. He is wearing professional attire, his badge, and hat. A radio is placed on his left shoulder above his badge. He appears to be on duty. The officer has one hand positioned on his hip while the other hand is relaxed on his lap. Five yellow sun-shaped streetlights appear in the background. The artist uses few colors to produce the painting: blue, white, black, and yellow. These colors create a nighttime setting. The visual texture of the painting appears to be smooth. The painter …show more content…
First, the artist, Kerry James Marshall, is of African American ethnicity. Modernism art is seen as white, male dominated, and uninterested in minorities where as POMO switches to more feminist and minority artists. Marshall uses the post modernist approach of identity politics through the representation of an African American in a police uniform rather than drawing a Caucasian officer. The artist also uses codes. This is displayed through the badge the officer is wearing. The badge is an identifier; every officer wears one but each badge is specific to one officer. The badge is symbolic of uniqueness and individuality which helps reinforce the artist’s theme. The number written on the badge is not easily determined in the portrait. The artist’s description verbalizes the reasoning for creating the portrait. Marshall states the portrait was a response to the many African Americans killed by armed policemen throughout the United States. The previously stated is an example of POMO because current events influenced the creation of the artwork. Several aspects previously mentioned reinforce the theme of gender and racial
One of the most intriguing and influential images included in Citizen by Claudia Rankine is the image entitled Blue Black Boy. Blue Black Boy is a visual work of art created by Carrie Mae Weems in 1990’s; Weems is a very successful female African American artist. Through a close reading of the image, I was able to derive meaning out of the various aspects that work together to create such an eloquent work of art.
The violence that some officers exude to minorities should only be used in extreme, desperate situations not when a teen steals some cigars or is walking home with a hood on. Besides showing an interest in racial justice and issues of race helps to break down barriers, exposed as false perceived misunderstandings, and shed light on commonly held perceptions of a race-infused
This historical fact influences the ways in which police officers view African Americans and the response that African American individuals give police officers. A prime example of this influence is Wes, the author, describing the likelihood of his friend Shea being stopped by the cops. Wes first started his description of Shea by his physical appearance. He stated that Shea was his age, “but with shorter, reddish hair and light skin, light enough for a spray of freckles to shine through” (p.79). Then, Wes continues his narrative of Shea by
Chapter 4 in The Color of Justice: Race, ethnicity, and crime in America, was about the relations between society and law enforcement officers. This has been a major topic, especially in the United States for a long time. The unfortunate statistic that minorities are more likely to encounter being killed, arrested, and victimized by excessive physical force; has been a real issue even in today’s society. However, police departments are trying to combat the way police officers interact with the community; especially those of color. Although steps have been takes there are still some instances where police aggression happens. With all of the issues that arise between certain minority populated community’s police it is evident that conflict
Paula Austin, addresses police brutality and their relationship with guns. She opens up her discussion by providing us with images of newspaper articles that demonstrate the image of police brutality. She then goes further in depth and illustrates the increase in gun kills demonstrated by the police force. She provides us with statistical data on the increase in deaths caused by police through guns. Moreover, she then draws the connection between police and race. She addresses to us on how African Americans are way more targeted against by police than any other race. She provides us with the most recent example of “ Stephon Clark” an unarmed black man who was killed by police on the notion that he was “armed”. She then examines this event and illustrates the further connection towards guns and
Throughout the course of American politics, superstar senators have risen from the frameworks of capitol buildings on federal, state, and local levels. Some were ruthlessly manipulative in their desire to achieve success, choosing to push their own agenda for the sake of a spot in history. Others served a more earnest cause, putting their country before their party. From the founding fathers to post World War II America, senators of the extremely partisan kind worked in Washington, these men certainly were not the last of the “cut throat” politicians, their actions setting a precedent for future men and women in their partisan agenda. However, noble men who worked endlessly for the prosperity, safety, and unity of America are often swept
People watched in shock; Protesters and none protesters circled around as Gregory Lee Johnson lit the American Flag on fire. Why would a man disrespect a symbol such as the American flag, that represents freedom, liberty and democracy? Was he protected by the constitution's first amendment? The Supreme Court answered all these questions we had by voting in favor of Johnson. Johnson's intentions were only political, and he as the freedom of speech. The Supreme Court was correct on this decision on letting Johnson go, since he was protected by his amendments, and no matter what the action was, if the amendment gives us the right, we should be entitled to our freedoms.
My dog died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know. I never notice when he stopped going outside to play. As I was outside bury him I ran into James Wilson Marshall, a carpenter from New Jersey, who has invited me to his ranch. The ranch was near Coloma, California. Coloma was a really beautiful place, but even so, Indians were a pain in the ass here. I mean were basically were splitting the land fifty/fifty, there is no reason to get mad. Anyhow, James came to me to tell me about his new project he was working. He was planning to build a water-powered sawmill. He was contracted by John Sutter, a German-born Swiss citizen and founder of a colony of Nueva Helvetia (New Switzerland). I never cared want James built as long as I could help since he did let me stay at his colony, its only right if I did give a helping hand.
Having the title of a respected organization founded under the influence of the constitution on the actual image promotes a sense of authority. Figure 1 consists of information about racial profiling through the use of statistics and facts. The Figure also contains images that represent the police as well as the men of the minority. Figure 1 uses the actual police as a sign of authority in the picture. The image of the older man placing the police cars suggests that he is a higher political figure that has the power to control what the police department does. Judge Shira Scheindlin of the Federal Court in New York said that she felt the city had been deliberately indifferent to police officers illegally detaining and frisking minority residents. (New York Times). This shows that even those in higher political offices see the covered issue within the police department. The second image is consists of two different time periods The time difference is displayed through the use of color. The side that is black and white represents the past and the side of color represents the present. Figure 2 has the presence of the police in the black and white portion of the image to show a form of authority. The image appears to be from the civil rights era when police discrimination was a prominent issue. CCR uses the presence of the police as an authoritative figure in a negative way to build trust in the audience. By displaying
In the previous year, the amount of people killed by the police department has increased, and even worse African Americans are three times more likely than Caucasians to be killed by the hands of a police. In 2015, the percent of unarmed African Americans killed was 30 percent compared to 19 percent of Caucasians. Although, 2016 is not over yet already 793 people have been killed by policemen. Mike Luckovich drew this cartoon representing the fear of African Americans, and to point out that recently the shootings are reoccurring. The number has made it so difficult for African Americans to live peacefully, they are in constant fear that their life could be taken away by the police. The cartoonist drew a black man in the car conversing with
In Coates’ novel, he expresses a major loss in his life, the loss of his best friend Prince, by the hands of the Prince Georges County (Maryland) Police officer while he studied at Howard University in Washington, DC. The loss of Prince has stayed with him personally into his adulthood and has driven him to stand up for human rights. Was the officer that murdered his friend doing his job, or did he extend beyond what he’s paid to do? Ta-Nehisi lives with the pain of the loss of his friend, however, he alike the majority African Americans live in fear of how Prince was murdered. Let’s be clear in what I’m expressing, there is no fear of a man or women who carries a badge, nonetheless, the fear comes from what they may possibly do with that combination.
A police officer is a law enforcement official whose job is to protect and serve the people, not to abuse their power. Due to the fact that the U.S is consisted of many different races and ethnic groups, the ongoing conflict between police officers and citizens of color is at a constant rise. Although policies today no longer directly target those of colors, the policies applied by law enforcements in African-Americans communities are discriminating. Officers sometimes abuse the policies resulting in citizens viewing it as discrimination. By changing the way laws and regulations that unfairly impact Black and Brown communities can improve the justice system (Policy 5).Racial impact has changed the view of the government resulting in more inclusion of people of color in the system. Policies that are not racially excluding anyone of color should be used within police departments to evaluate the impact of different policing.
On the most basic level, tattoos acted as a badge of social and cultural differentiation that separated the tattooed from the non-tattooed. On a deeper level, however, social and cultural homogeneity did not unite the tattooed, for the subject matter and aesthetic style of the tattoos created a fault-line that divided the classes. (Caplan, 2000, 148)
To what extent was William Marshall’s life as a knight different from other knights of the time? Invariably it was not that much different than those of his peers until his later life. The one thing that set him apart from other knights was his fierce dedication to loyalty.
This piece is called “Irony of a negro policeman” by Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1981. This is a Neo-expressionist painting; he used acrylic and crayon to create this figurative image. It is depicting an African-American being a policeman. The figure in the painting is a black mass, with a mask-like face and hat resembling a cage. On the right of the painting are the words “Irony of Negro Policeman,” and to the bottom right of the panting is the word “Pawn,” clearly stating Basquiat’s opinion on the ridiculous position of a black Policeman. Basquiat used a lot of straight simple lines, squares and rectangles, the colors used in this image are especially primary colors, he also used words on an almost empty background to amplified the meaning of his image and the concentration of details are on the
