First, the artist, Kerry James Marshall, is of African American ethnicity. Modernism art is seen as white, male dominated, and uninterested in minorities where as POMO switches to more feminist and minority artists. Marshall uses the post modernist approach of identity politics through the representation of an African American in a police uniform rather than drawing a Caucasian officer. The artist also uses codes. This is displayed through the badge the officer is wearing. The badge is an identifier; every officer wears one but each badge is specific to one officer. The badge is symbolic of uniqueness and individuality which helps reinforce the artist’s theme. The number written on the badge is not easily determined in the portrait. The artist’s description verbalizes the reasoning for creating the portrait. Marshall states the portrait was a response to the many African Americans killed by armed policemen throughout the United States.
