The presentation that I chose to watch was a stand up comedy act by Kevin Hart. Hart is a comedian superstar as well as actor, famous for his starring roles in Ride Along and Central Intelligence. Aside from being an actor, Hart travels around America to deliver comedy sketches for talk shows or comedian events. This particular sketch was given in 2007 in Canada at the Just for Laughs festival. Because this presentation was a comedy sketch, its sole purpose was used as entertainment. The purpose of an entertainment speech is to have the audience relaxed and smiling, but also learning some kind of lesson at the same time. Both these elements of an entertainment speech are prominent in Hart’s comedic sketch, therefore making it highly successful.
On the evening of the 16th of October, 1859, John Brown, an abolitionist fighting for rights for slaves, lead a raid of 21 armed men on the federal armory of Harpers Ferry, Virginia, which now is West Virginia. John Brown did this in attempt of freeing slaves. The raid lasted two days, and was ended by a military force lead by Robert E. Lee. Brown was later captured and sent to prison for the charges of treason. On November 2nd, 1859, Brown gave a statement to the court addressing his action. He denied all charges, and felt no guilt about his actions only because it was for the greater good. One month after he was sentenced to death, he was hanged on December 2nd 1859. Brown uses diction and repetition to prove his innocence and challenge
No matter what a person’s race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation is, everyone should enjoy equality. In the speech Speech Upon the Removal of Confederate Monuments by Mitch Landrieu, the Mayor of New Orleans, the removal of the Confederate monuments in New Orleans is discussed. The speech emphasises the fact that the Confederacy was wrong pertaining to their treatment of African Americans, and instead of teaching history, the Confederate monuments convey an image of inequality and violence. Mitch Landrieu argues for the deconstruction of historic Confederate monuments through his allusions to past historic events to contrast the modern shift of equality, so he can call the people to action to deconstruct the monuments. Through the
For my rhetorical analysis, I chose the movie "Rocky Balboa". This speech gave me a lot of insight on how to take care of things and to deal with the consequences afterwards. Rocky's speech to his son “Rocky Balboa Jr.” was very inspirational and motivational. The purpose of this speech was to encourage you to fight for what you want no matter how many times you get pushed down. It taught me to be myself regardless of what other people will say and think. The speech was informative and persuasive. It was informative because Rocky informed his son with factual advice knowing that he has endured the something growing up. It was persuasive because he persuaded his son to be the best possible version of himself. The context/meaning of the
Matthew McConaughey was a very enthusiastic speaker who showed that he was the right choice when winning this award. He began by thanking his fellow workers who worked hard on the movie and even the other nominees to show respect and not doubt his fellow actors. McConaughey also states his three main points of the speech to show what he would be talking about. His humor made his words flow whenever he started talking about his Father and it caused it to shift into thanking his loved ones in the audience. His stance throughout the speech looked like he was shifting only because he would look around at the audience and create eye contact. McConaughey pointed out the people he was talking about and directly spoke to them the things he wanted to
Alexander H. Stephen, in the ‘Cornerstone Speech’, firmly stated that, the Confederacy was basically on racial inequality and slavery. He clearly outlined the existing differences between the new nation and the American United States. Stephen made it clear that, the Confederacy of the cornerstone was not primarily of chattel slavery, but the black people subordination benefited the white people. Thus, he tied slavery to race. Confederacy was the origin of the era of apartheid in South Africa. Stephen made declarations that the new government was founded on the great truth , that the negro was not equal on the side of the white people and that, slavery which was to be a subordination to the white race which was superior, was a normal and a natural condition. Stephen criticized the claims of the northern that, African enslavement was a law violation nature and that it was a wrong principle, morally, politically and socially. He clearly put across that his new government had an idea which was exactly different from the northern claims. He argued that, it was a kind of insanity to believe that the Negro will be equal between the white and black people and also that, enslaving the blacks was wrong. He made predictions that, the Confederate constitution has settled all the questions relating to the African slavery which existed among the white people. Stephen’s arguments led to the outbreak of the civil war in 1865 (The Teaching AmericanHistory.org, 2017).
Cornel West spoke at Texas A&M University-Commerce as a guest speaker on September 28th in order to discuss why race matters in 2016. He talked about different subjects including race in politics, social justice, social economics, police accountability, and prominent social justice warriors. Filling the shoes of Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. West kindly educated the students and faculty by discussing the current racial justice movement, what the movement stands for, and what they intend to do. The insight that Dr. West offered helped me better understand the difficulties of racial tension, and what we can do to stop both racial and social injustice. What I found particularly interesting about his speech was the way that he captivated the audience.
Transition involves personal beliefs and attitudes that promotes a mental, physical or emotional development and progression over time. The exploration of transitions can provide opportunities for an individual to emotionally reflect on their own personal experience; leading to the social awareness of others in relation to the consequences encountered. This can result to uncertainties, forcing one to go through numerous of obstacles in order to mature and grow to a new phase of life. This notion is explored in the novel ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’ by J.C. Burke, where the protagonist experience varies emotions associated with the car accident, where he is pushed to his limit in attempt to cope with the difficulties. The editorial article titled
When the twin towers were destroyed in New York City by the terrorist group led by Osama Bin Laden, a Country filled with panic, sadness, and anger was left behind. Thousands of innocent civilians were killed, and the families of the fallen suffered greatly. People demanded answers, and wanted justice. People also felt unsafe, and were unaware if it was reasonable to expect another attack. President George Walker Bush prepares a speech for congress to discuss the events that took place, and the plans that will take place because of these events. The objectives of the speech Bush was trying to accomplish were informing the nation what had happed on September 11th, he then noted that it was not Muslins to be blamed for the attack, the challenges that lie ahead, and our plan for the “War on Terror.” The President uses the canons of rhetoric to execute a speech that met his audience’s needs.
Image being struck down by cancer and having to living with a disease eating at your body, well Jim Valvano lived under those circumstances and was able to give one of the influential speeches of all time that people still turn to for motivation. The ESPY Awards is an annual award ceremony in which awards are presented to individuals to recognize their achievements in both sports-related performance and high character outside of sports(Rothman). At the 1993 Espys, Jim Valvano or “Jimmy V” delivered an acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, a speech that moved the audience to their feet. Just nine months prior to speaking, Jimmy was diagnosed with a severe form of cancer called Metastatic Adenocarcinoma (V Foundation). It was evident, by the way he spoke, his time on earth was quickly coming to an end, in the way he spoke and the stories he told about those he has met through his life. During the speech he referred to not knowing how much time he still had on earth before cancer took him for good (V Foundation).Jimmy V argues the idea that one bad thing life should be able to hold you back from being a strong and outgoing individual. Jimmy Valvano was always able to uplift a crowd by bringing energy to his surroundings by his tone, use of humor, and by using the rhetorical appeal pathos.
Many people recognize Jim Carrey as the pet detective or the not-so-bright Lloyd Christmas, but during his commencement speech to the graduating class of 2014 at the Maharishi University of Management, he opens up to reveal a much deeper side of himself. While the speech he delivers is permeated with his traditional humor, Carrey also inspires his audience to think about how they want to conduct their lives. Carrey presents an effective argument for persuading college graduates who are entering the work field to not let fear control how they live. By successfully employing anecdote, analogy, and audience engagement, Carrey entices his audience to be willing to take risks and choose love over fear when approaching a career and other life
After reading and analyzing Dr.Kings “Remaining Awake during a Revolution” commencement speech that he presented at Oberlin College during his graduation ceremony; he wanted the people to have a good visual on what he was explaining and talking about. King wanted to inform the people about what was going; so he used allusions, statics, and logos.
Brechin begins his chapter with President Ronald Reagan's speeches which “fir[e] the public imagination with short, symbolic messages”. Reagan promoted ideas such as purpose, freedom and history’s journey. An example which he refers to is the Alamo which pushed pest singing the idealistic song of daring, decent and fair. Despite the poor conditions Washington faced the president spoke of dreams and human progress which is limitless. Brechin refers back to this speech throughout the chapter since these same ideas were used to convince individuals to take the journey to California. This journey was promoted as natural as the Israelites who entered Canaan and the holy family to the New World. Individuals were granted divine justification for
While other descriptions of Urban’s speech have a few reasons why the crusade was important, Guibert of Nogent’s version have a lot more. In Nogent’s description Urban highly emphasize the place Jerusalem itself, he explains how the Jerusalem is the place where Christ was crucified and was buried. It was the city where he walked on his foot, and the holy place in which God himself was manifested in the flesh. Essentially, Urban sets the emotional state to further signal the people to go to war.
In the video from the Democratic National Convention of 1984 Jessie Jackson speaks to his audience while he ran for Presidency. The problem Jessie Jackson sought out to solve was the well being of his people and supporters. Jackson, as a former preacher, took the approach of what would be categorized as Black Preaching through his speech. Black Preaching is a style of speech represented in African American churches reflecting the persuasive narrations of the preacher. This connects greatly with one of the major problems in African American Rhetoric and African Diaspora. There is an enormous lack of representation in literature and study of the African American people and their culture. This same idea holds true when talking about representation in government.
In February of 2015, Dr. Guy Winch delivered a TEDTalk about emotional first aid. His seventeen-minute-speech successfully raised mental health awareness and encouraged the audience to treat emotional wounds before they become serious psychological issues. Dr. Winch achieved his speaking purposes by carefully and effectively building ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the talk.
