Analysis Essay #3 The book I have chosen to analyze from is “Dracula” by Bram Stoker. The character from the book I am choosing to write about today is the main antagonist of the story, Dracula. This story is told through a group of journals. The topic I have chosen to look at is Dracula ability of transformation, and the key role it played in ability to pull off his charade. Throughout this story Dracula uses transformation into many different animal forms and mist to help get close to and subdue his victims. Starting early in this story uses Dracula’s uses his ability to take different forms to avoid being noticed in his journey to London. Dracula use of transformation to escape the ship without being questioned or identified as the killer of the crew of that ship he arrived on the Demeter. “But, strangest of all, the very instant the shore was touched, an immense dog sprang up on the deck from below…”” … jumped from the bow on the sand. Making straight for the steep cliffs…”” …it disappeared into the darkness…” “ No trace of the dog was ever found of the great dog…” Dracula’s transformed appearance was noticed but he escaped cleanly without any one being the wiser that the death of the crew was caused by him. Though out this story Dracula uses gift of transformation to move about and get the upper hand on his victims. Dracula uses his ability to transform into a dark form, and is able to overtake Lucy while she was in a sleep walking type state and infect her.

The strangest event that Harker notices in Dracula’s castle is “Dracula emerge from his room on the floor below, slither out, head downward, in lizard fashion, with his cloak spread out around him like great wings” (Dracula, 179). This shows that “Dracula is not a person. He is a presence, an absence that requires concealing” (Wolf, 368). This tells Harker that something is very wrong with this man. In the beginning of the novel, when Dracula is first encountered, he is described as old, although “His face was strong… [his] lips, whose ruddiness showed astonishing vitality in a man of his years… The general effect was one of extraordinary pallor.” (27). This description of the Count shows that while he is old, he still possess some attributes and features of the young. Once Dracula finds that the men have made a bond against him, he makes a bond to take all of their women. The universe is composed of both good and evil beings. The good humans are always nice and thoughtful of other people. The evil characters, on the other hand, keep on hurting and harming their fellows. In most cases, people do not like associating with evil characters. These people are avoided, and they live a lonely life without friends. The reason is that good and evil will always be two parallel elements that will never meet. In a typical and real-world setting, good and evil characters are determined by their actions. For instance, an evil person could set a trap for luring their closest friend into danger. Conversely, in the fictional world, evil characters are differentiated from the good ones by giving them terrifying and monstrous images. The novel Dracula by Bram Stoker is one book that uses vampires to portray evil. Some people find pleasure in doing good while others find joy in doing evil to others. But everyone is entitled to choosing their paths and personalities. The question is, between good and evil, what is the noblest thing to emulate? The Dracula novel gives a series of events that answers the question. Evil will never surpass goodness, and neither will the two ever cross lines; instead, goodness will always win the battle.
