King James Bible Impact On Society

Though it may not seem like much, this greatly impacted the accessibility to religion, and inspired many to become literate. In 1604, King James conducted a meeting with translators, and asked them to translate the bible while also having it be relatable to the way he practiced religion. He inspired many to become more educated, and increased the standard of education. Also, he inspired Shakespeare to write multiple plays, like Macbeth.

James II is 53 when he is crown in 1685. The Parliament, now mostly Tories, were in favor of him, and he claimed that he favored them as well. They rewarded him by letting him raise an army just in time for James of Monmouth rebellion. Monmouth was a bastard son of Charles II and claimed that James had killed quite a few people, including Charles. In July of 1685, the two James met at the Battle of Sedgemoor which resulted in Monmouth’s defeat and eventual execution12. James decided to keep his standing army. Besides being openly Catholic, he also came from a military background. His court was one of dignity. He also kept a tight purse, he doesn’t spend his money on favorites or lavish parties like his brother. He ultimately makes court less interesting and useful for those who wanted to social climb. He believed in order, hierarchy and complete obedience or be dismissed. Although the country, in general, didn’t like Catholics at all, they were mostly okay with James because they knew he was old and was sure to die soon, plus he didn’t have any son, so his successor would be his Protestant daughter Mary. But in 1687 he’s second wife, Mary Beatrice of Modena, also Catholic, became pregnant and on June 10 of 1688, James was born13. Immediately Parliament and the country was in an uproar, Parliament sends word to William of Orange, Mary’s husband, to invade England and take the throne. William agrees and he reaches England in the same year.

The most discussed history book, the book of morality, the word of god, The Bible has transformed the world, for it has created guidelines for one to live by, influenced the government and laws , and has liberated many from oppression by its clear teachings.

The Bible is a sacred book of scriptures that Christians and people of the Jewish faith believe is the written account of the word of God. Many different authors composed the works that make up the Bible. It is said that Jesus Christ is the son God who was sent to be the Lord and Savior of all people. Many Christians and Jewish people believe the Bible is the way of life. Those who believe and follow the beliefs of the Bible and God’s word will have eternal life if they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. The Bible has been in print and given to others for hundreds of years. The first King James Bible was published back in the year 1611. Within the King James Version, it used to contain what are now known as the canons. A biblical canon is a set or series of related books. The canons, within the King James Version, these were called the books of the apocrypha. Apocrypha means ‘hide away’ in Greek. The apocrypha is a collection of books that were located in between the Old Testament and the New Testament. For over 270 years, the books of the apocrypha were published in the King James Version of the Bible.

The Bible is arguably the most important and influential book ever published. People consult the bible to become more like Jesus or make better decisions in their life. The bible instructs people what not to do, for example the 10 commandments. Plus, the bible contains information on what people should do such as; love your neighbor and evangelize. In the book 12 Years a Slave, Tanner one of the slave owners, uses the bible to justify whipping his slaves. However, William Ford a different slave owner Solomon works for, uses the bible to teach about other things such as leading a prayerful life. By spreading the book to nearly all of Europe in the 1600s, it could have a significant influence on art and literature. Literature like Paradise Lost and The Chronicles of Narnia that reference the Bible would most likely not exist today without King James. These thousands of works with their roots in the Bible have sculpted western culture for hundreds of years; so much that it is difficult to imagine a world without them. The Bible has been described as a “book-making book,” meaning that it encourages other literature. Professor Gardiner, in an essay in the Atlantic monthly, expressed that “in all study of English literature, if there be any one axiom which may be accepted without question, it is that the ultimate standard of English prose style is set by the King James version of the Bible.” The prose that the Bible was written in took almost no time at all to start appearing in works of literature.

The Bible, one of the world’s most ancient works of literature established into a book several years ago, can be debated to be true or false. However, whether or not it is doesn’t matter because either way it is incredibly fascinating. There are some truths and mysterious secrets embedded within the Bible. I believe the Bible should be taken figuratively rather than literally. To think that a group of writers from the ancient past had integrated stories with important morals and philosophies. The Bible has remained relevant for centuries and unfortunately has been neglected by the ignorance by the generations of today. Believe it or not, languages and popular phrases have been passed from the Bible and they may not even realize it.

The Magna Carte, The Declaration of Independence, and even the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx are examples of some of the documents that have helped to shape humanity. The Bible has had perhaps more impact on humanity than any other Document ever written. Many people read the Bible, but know little of the history of the Bible itself. Many people are familiar with at least some of the contents of the Bible, but the average person knows little of the people, processes, and events involved in its creation and translations.

Kidd begins to focus on this idea and whether the Bible was a reliable source or if it only covered the history of certain part, or parts, of the world (Kidd, 55). This phenomenon can most be seen with the discovery of the New World and Native Americans. Kidd explains how the Bible did not mention anything of the New World and most importantly the people living there. For the stories written in it have changed the way many think and even believe when it comes to the power greater than this world. The Bible holds very specific opinions on things such as slavery, who humans should treat each other, and ultimately social justice. It has been one of the most important foundations for allowing social reform to occur in modern day history as well as the history of the whole world. However, it is forgotten in history class how prominent the ancient texts have changed the people. I believe that as the author mentions, The Bible is a huge part of history and people value it. People have always valued it and put it in the necessities of life. Like when people traveled in with wagons only bringing A Bible, along with food, etc. clearly shows that. The author obviously shows that they have a love and importance towards it as well. The author believes that it has shaped our culture but is fading with new cultures coming into the U.S. I believe thats one reason they would like it taught in schools.

The Bible contains sixty-six books, written by approximately forty authors, over the course of two thousand years. God created and loves humans despite their rebellious attitude towards Him, and God wants to reunite humans to Himself (Poythress, 2008). The Bible, in specific, is often referred to as a source of moral code, hope, and answers to social, ethical, and political questions.
