The Klondike Gold Rush had begun on August 16, 1869, when Yukon area Indians had found gold in Rabbit Creek, near a town named Dawson in Canada. Word of the discovery of gold in the Klondike hadn’t reached other regions in the world till July 17, 1897, when gold-rushers finally set off to go to the vast Yukon territory. According to estimation, there was around 100,000 gold-seekers who decided to test their luck on acquiring some of the valuable gold, which had been literally coming in by the tons! The gold rush started because Edward Hargraves returned to Australia after prospecting gold in California he noticed that some parts of Australia were similar and convinced gold could be found. He was proved right a year later he discovered gold in New South Wales in April 1851 he spread the news to local colonies and overseas but it took many months for people overseas to find out. For the first year, the diggings were worked by locals from Australian colonies. Soon after word spread to England in January 1852 a new rush of migration followed as Britons from all classes decided to try their luck the discovery of gold in Victoria also added to the hysteria. Gold was found in the capital of California today Sacramento also called the Sacramento Valley in early 1848 to around 1857. The Mexican province governor gave John Sutter 50,000 acres of land to make a place his was going to call New Switzerland this land stretched from the Sacramento and the American Rivers (“Gold Rush”). John Sutter the owner of the new asked a man by the name of James Marshall to help him build a sawmill that would be located 50 miles east on Sutter's land. (Blashfield 1). So Marshall and his men went to work when Sutter came by to check the progress he found something sparkling in the water of one of the rivers near the sawmill and extracted a lump of gold from a nearby gorge and shouted Gold! Gold! We have found it! But Marshall didn’t really believe him until he threw down a handful of golden flakes on the table. This is how the gold rush started and had them thinking how to keep it a secret.

In 1849, the California Gold Rush attracted the massive people immigrated to gold finding from all over the world. The gold-seekers travelled by the ship boarding in San Francisco port or by feet to leave their hometown and families from west because they believed that they could gain more money and had a better life than their original place. In the early days of California was an unknown place however after the gold-seekers arrived to California growth rapidly with crowded population. Later, the Rocky Mountains establish to be a state which called California. The gold-seekers came over to California because they wanted to achieve their goals for a better life, as they experienced by their hard working and created lots of the potential

The Gold Rush is considered as one of the most significant events in the American history. It began after James Marshall discovered gold form the Sutter’s mill in Coloma, California on January 24, 1948. Though James and Sutter tired to keep this news as secret, there was one newspaper reported it. After this speck of gold was found the word spread around California. Once the word was through California and other people started finding gold the news got to the 11th U.S. president, James Polk. James then sparked the gold rush by announcing that gold was being found in California without a problem, “You'll find it anywhere you dig down there.”. One year earlier Mexico gave up the California territory at the end the of the Mexican-American War. The sudden change of land ownership caused conflict between the Mexican Americans and the Californians.

One of the better known and first documentations found pertaining to the gold rush would be the account of James Marshall, in which he had been looking for the right piece of land to build his sawmill. Once he found the right area to build the sawmill, he set up camp. After a day or so went by, he had noticed shiny pieces of some unknown substance in the river near his encampment. As it turned out, these pieces were gold,"Boys, by God I believe I have found a gold mine.” (Holliday, 58). This story circled the globe far and wide, causing many to flock from all corners of the world in order to experience what James Marshall had gotten by pure accident.

The lust for gold has existed since long before the birth of Christ, from the pharaohs in old Egypt to the forty-niners during the California gold rush. Gold has always been considered as a sign of wealth and because of its rareness and value it has had a big impact on history. The willingness of people to give up all they have in the pursuit of getting rich has motivated people to leave their home and to search for fortune; this was one of the reasons why people came to the United States.
