The European knight and the Japanese samurai are two of the greatest soldiers in history. Both were strong, fierce, and brave warriors who were hired by lords to defend their lands. They also both lived by a code of honor which contained all of the warrior’s values and what was expected of them. Prepared from a very young age, samurai and knights were trained in many aspects such as combat, strategy, serving a lord, and honor above all else. When they entered their rank of either knight or samurai. Both fought to defend the lord’s land and were given. When a knight finished his service, he was given an exchange of land, of which he permanently owned and could remain until his service was needed once again. On the other hand, when a Samurai finished his service, he was given an exchange of allowance. Instead of land, this allowance was just money, but the Samurai was paid very handsomely for his duty and service. Both warriors did not have to serve year round, and as a matter of fact only for a couple months. However, they were paid in large quantities for their short time of service. One of the biggest separations between the two codes is how they viewed women and their role in society. As mentioned earlier, a knight was to fight for his earthly lord, his heavenly lord, and his chosen lady. Ladies were viewed as being weak and needing to be rescued by their knight in shining armor. They were to be idolized and defended by the knights in hopes of gaining their love. On the other hand, women were viewed as the complete opposite in the Bushido code. Women were expected to possess great courage and live up to the same moral values and bravery as the men were. Although women, would not become Samurai’s themselves, they would be trained like warriors to defend their household, as the Samurai was trained to fight away from home. Each wore heavy armor and carried in their respective weapon of choice. A knight’s armor was built out of chain mail and was usually plated as well. The Samurai’s armor consisted of an outer layer that was built out of strong iron, while the layer underneath was made out of leather. Each warrior carried their own sword as well as a secondary weapon. The knight would would often be armed with a lance along with his sword, while the samurai would be armed with a bow and arrow along with his sword. The last major difference between the two were their primary virtues. Virtues in both codes were similar in the sense that they helped to guide the warrior’s actions on and off the battlefield, but were different in the sense of which ones they embodied the most. The Samurai lived the seven virtues of Bushido which were integrity, respect, heroic courage, honor, compassion, honesty/sincerity, and duty/loyalty (Greene 1). Each were represented by a Japanese symbol and were the general characteristics expected of the Samurai. The chivalry code on the other hand, had its own version of the Ten Commandments that summarized everything the knight should stand for.
