Laboratory medicine and pathology services play an important central role in the provision of healthcare services and are involved in approximately 70% of health care diagnoses (Department of Health, 2008). Most acute hospital trusts will provide pathology and laboratory medicine services through the four main sub divisions - microbiology, haematology, biochemistry, and histopathology departments. Pathology services are fundamental to the running of medicine and healthcare systems and provide a wide-ranging assortment of services to both the local primary care providers and hospitals. Services provided by pathology and laboratory medicine include screening programmes, monitoring the prognosis of diseases, public health and health …show more content…
However as laboratory medicine does not provide this direct patient care they are not always recognised as an important clinical provision.
In 1999 the Department of Health introduced the Pathology Modernisation Programme, with the aims of introducing new practices and technologies to deliver the highest possible quality of care to patients whilst improving the quality and efficiency of the services provided by NHS pathology and laboratory medicine departments. In delivering pathology and laboratory medicine services, it is important that the accuracy, timeliness and interpretation of the tests provided are of the highest standard (Moore, 2015), and at this time not all pathology and laboratory medicine services were able to provide this. It was thought unsustainable for a standard district style of hospital trust to be able to deliver the wide range of services necessary to meet future needs. The programme also recognised the need for faster access to diagnostics in primary care, A&E, out-patient clinics and on the wards for staff and patients (Department of Health, 2004). With the development of the NHS Plan (Department of Health, 2000) setting national standards for diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, mental health and the care of older
Doctors are held in high respect and are expected to diagnose and treat illness in one visit. Drawing blood for laboratory tests is feared because belief is that the blood cannot be replace. Surgery is feared for this reason and is a last resort (Health Beliefs, 2011).
A Medical Technologist performs laboratory testing ranging from simple to complex. The tests they perform may require complicated equipment or may use something as simple as the microscope. What equipment is used depends on the test needed. Results of these tests performed by lab specialists are used by physicians to help treat their
Choosing a career you would like to pursue for the rest of your life can be quite the hassle. You have to consider your strengths and your weaknesses along with the changing economy. If you do not take into consideration those things I just said, you might be unhappy with the career you chose. The career I chose to pursue is a medical laboratory technician. A MLT is a person that performs medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. During their job, they analyze bodily fluids, conduct blood tests and transfusions, examine cells stained with dye, record test data, take care of laboratory equipment, consult with pathologist about abnormal cells, and collect
The aim of the NHS is to ensure continuous improvement in the standards of clinical care, to prevent errors in clinical practice, to raise standards and improving outcomes offering access to a range of healthcare services (Freedom D, 2002). This paper intends to
Point of care testing (POCT) refers to laboratory testing that occurs close to the patient rather than in a central laboratory. POCT is usually performed by non-laboratory trained individuals such as nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, percussionist’s, anesthesia assistants, midwives and paramedics [1]. In recent years, these assays have been increasingly carried out at sites of patient care, such as doctor’s offices, emergency rooms, and even at home. This trend allows for rapid estimates of the state or progress of an illness [2]. POCT is mainly characterized by proximity to the patient, quantitative or semi-quantitative single measurements, short turnaround time, no sample preparation, no pipetting, use of pre-made reagents, user-friendly dedicated analytical instruments and instant, result deduced therapeutic action [3]. In recent years, POCT has gained ground worldwide. In advanced healthcare
With the passage of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Act the patient would know that unsafe practices and poor quality within any laboratory will not be tolerated. CLIA rules for laboratory testing are more standardized because it outlines the expectations of laboratories. This passage would allow the patient and/or their personal representative access to his or her laboratory test reports and the results of such test from the laboratory. The patient would know that this amendment requires laboratories to implement policies and procedures relating to a patient request for information. Also, the patient would know that there must be a proper verification of identification before he or she has access to PHI. Any laboratory
Diagnostic/Patient Specimens - Specimens that are collected directly from humans or animals (including, but not limited to, excreta, secreta, blood and its components, tissue and tissue fluid swabs, and body parts) that are transported for research, diagnosis, investigations, disease treatment and prevention.
Pathologist is a valuable resource for all other doctors and physicians, who provides necessary and needed information for every patient on a daily basis to ensure appropriate and well patient care and help.
After discovering my passion for science and math, I pursue a career in Clinical Laboratory Science with enthusiasm. My desire to study this subject originates from the exciting and rapidly-moving subject area that is highly relevant to major issues facing society today. Clinical Laboratory Scientists play a crucial role in the healthcare field; in detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients. My goal is to be involved in the latest advances in medical research and to constantly be expanding my knowledge about my field. On top of this goal, Clinical Laboratory Science remains a challenging, rewarding and inspiring topic that will motivate and shape my career for my entire life.
In any medical and health care field specimen collections are a major part of them. "A specimen, like a specimen of blood or body tissue that is taken for medical testing. The noun specimen comes from the Latin word specere, meaning “to look.” Biologists collect specimens so they can get a better look at something to study it" Specimen.(2015). There are two major types of specimen collections that are used in health care facilities, those are blood and urine specimens. The doctor is the one who will order a specimen to be collected. If it is a blood specimens, the procedure will be done in a laboratory setting, usually. If it is a urine specimen, those are collected in the physician's office. there are many reasons why these specimens are
Pathology is an area of the medical field where a doctor examines specimens in order to study and evaluate what diseases do to the human body. Doctors that specialize in Pathology are subjected to stereotype, society believes that the Pathologist’s duty entails in staying in the morgue and perform autopsies. This notion is flawed, Pathology has many subspecialties to choose and work on. Pathology is divided into four major categories: Histopathology, Cytology, Blood Transfusion and Hematology; although they are all very similar in nature, they have significant specifications that differentiate them. In this article, the author's purpose is to showcase the Home Office Pathologist occupation and break away from the stereotype that has been set
Greedy Physicians: Doctors tend to order unnecessary test just to protect themselves. Doctors racking up charges with extra tests, services and procedures that the patient would not need. The way to practice medicine has change completely. Before, it was about how to do a good job, now it is about ‘How much will you benefit’.
Winston-Salem State University students can choose from more than 40 undergraduate majors to fit their strengths, like computer science, sports, visual arts, clinical lab, science and elementary education. The University offers over 10 graduate programs for both master's and doctorate. Therefore, they also have Bachelor of Science degrees that are offered in Clinical Laboratory Science, Exercise Physiology, Health Care Management, and Nursing. The Exercise Physiology Program (EXS) prepares students for professional programs such as medicine, physical therapy, graduate study
This study analyzed immunohistochemistry usage and data as well as practice patterns from many pathologists at a tertiary care center to identify the outlying practice patterns. Prior
In a nutshell, a major driving factor of profitability in pathology services industry is the test volume that is a number of tests requested by a GP or Specialist. Certainly, access and an increase in a number of patients correlate with an increase in test volume, but it is a GP or Specialist are the ones who request lab test regarding patient’s medical conditions. In skeptical view, Doctors and Pathology further behind the bar relationship increase the chance of unnecessary diagnosis of conditions through an increased number of tests. Coning rules there to restrict GP from over referring which do not applies to Specialist. When in fact doctors need to make sure that patient’s medical conditions are diagnosed before referring to a specialist or
