Characterization also reveals the subtext, or underlying meanings in literature. It does this by revealing what the character is like and what their motives are. Over the plot of the story, more characteristics are found out about the characters and you can figure out why the characters are doing what they are doing. Characterization in The Crucible helped reveal the subtext that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The direct characterization of Abigail Williams proves that you can’t assume someone's feelings just by the way the look. Since Abigail was good at concealing her true feelings, you can’t assume that the feeling she shows is the one she is actually feeling. The indirect characterization of John Proctor proves that you can’t think someone is innocent just because of their
A compelling story is composed of memorable characters. The characters of a story must be vivid, alive, and believable in order to capture the attention of the reader. Thus, characterization, which is how authors convey information about their characters, is pertinent in the development of the short story. Within characterization, there are two forms: direct, where the author or narrator tells the readers what a character is like or indirect, in which the author shows what a character is like through their actions, speech, or thoughts. The type of characterization also depends on the point of view of the story.
` 2 Characterization: Characterization in literature are the decisions the author makes to show a character’s personality, appearance, actions, dialogue, and motivations. Characterization is the concept of creating characters for a narrative.. Characters in literature sometimes make dramatic transformations. In a Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the character Scrooge dramatically changes his attitude about Christmas. In Stave 1, Dickens establishes Scrooge’s character as someone who is stingy and selfish. On page 3, it states,” Nobody ever stopped him in the street to say, with gladsome looks, “My dear Scrooge, how are you? When will you come to see me?” As the book stated, everyone in the neighborhood knew Scrooge was selfish and looked like an old grump. On page 3, it quotes, “No beggars implored him to bestow a trifle, no children asked him what it was o’clock, no man or woman ever once in all his life inquired the way to such and such a place, of
When one has the power to manipulate and deceive others, one can even get away with a hideous crime. In Roald Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter”, Mary Maloney, a pregnant woman, viciously pounds her unfaithful husband with a frozen lamb after learning about his affair. She takes advantage of the preconception that women are always the victims of a patriarchal society and that they are portrayed to be weak and submissive. Not only does she successfully deceive her husband and kills him, but she also cleverly deceives the police to destroy the weapon. Ultimately, it is her manipulative, ruthless, and decisive disposition that allows her to deceive the police and escape from being arrested.
There are five key aspects of literature which consists of setting, theme, plot, characterization, and style. Characterization is the “Peopling” of the story; it is the description of characters. The writer often discusses the behavior of the characters, their thought processes, their appearances, and even sometimes includes their names. Characterization highlights the important details of a character in a story. This also allows readers to imagine how others in the story would react to the main characters. It is also possible for the characters of a story to be the narrator.
Characterization is a literary device that is used step by step in literature to highlight and explain the details about a character in a story. This has been used as a literary tool for about five hundred years. However, older forms of Literature were focused more on the plot rather than the characters. The usage of characterization in Literature became popular after scholars began to consider psychology as a scientific field around the 19th century, which resulted in why readers started getting interested in “why the characters acted a certain way”, “how did the character react” and so on. Authors use characterization in their literary work, to give substance to their characters, show the characters’ motivation, and allow the readers to connect with the characters.
