The remaining 14 phlebotomists work different shifts to cover the hospital. The lab is open 24 hours a day 7 days. The phlebotomists at lane have a number of duties. They are responsible for collecting out-patients in the lab. The out patients reports to the registration department, and they present the clerk with the doctor’s order, a copy of their insurance information, and their state identification or their driver’s license. After the clerk has completed the registration process, they enter the tests in the computer. The out patient is then sent to the lab. The out patient gives the order to the lab clerk. The lab clerk time stamps the order, places the order in the file, and directs the out patient to the waiting area. After the tests are enter into the computer system, labels print out in the lab. The labels which print out in the lab are how the phlebotomists know they have an outpatient to …show more content…
Once the bevel of the needle is in the vein the phlebotomist will see a slight flash back of blood. At the sight of seeing this blood the phlebotomist will insert the specific blood tubes needed for testing into the vacationer hub. Different tests require specific tubes, and some tests have specific transportation requirements. After the tubes are filled the phlebotomists removes the needle and engages the safety device on the needle. They will place cotton over the site and instructs the patient to hold pressure on the site. They will label the tubes with the barcode labels and also label the tubes with the time, and the collector’s initials. The collector will check the site to ensure the bleeding has stopped, and if the bleeding has stopped the collector will attach a bandage to the skin and dismiss the patient telling them thank you, and have a good day. Once the specimens are brought into the lab the Accessioner enter each specimen into the computer and distributes the specimens to the appropriate

Jefferson County has been without local access to healthcare for decades. Over 10 years ago the county commissioners agreed that a local hospital is in the best interest of the people of Jefferson County and, therefore, began a fund to achieve this goal. As of today, the fund is worth $25 million, but to build and equip an adequately sized hospital, the county needs an additional $75 million. The commissioners appointed a committee to discuss the issue and determine the best plan of action going forward.
There are many ways that blood can be drawn from a patient. There are patients who may have special needs, such as the elderly and infants. These patients often have collapsible or delicate veins that often make drawing blood more difficult, than other patients. Individuals who learn what is phlebotomy will find these people work in all aspects of the medical field. They can be found in nursing homes, doctor's offices, hospitals, and various clinical-type settings.
Unfortunately, the clock is ticking, the hours are going by, and the world as is known is changing in all perspectives. In Fahrenheit 451 the people have TV screens as walls, they create fire instead of putting it out, and they kill and burn books to entertain themselves. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury shows how the world will change in technology, the way people work, and how people are going to be entertained. The technology of the future is clearly shown in Fahrenheit 451. For example, to replace the blood of somebody they use a “machine that pumps and replaces all the blood in the body” at the same time (6).
Tulsa Memorial Hospital (TMH) is one of the nine acute care hospitals that serves in the general population area. Historically, it has been highly profitable due to its well-appointed facilities, excellent medical staff, good-standing reputation for quality care and its ability to give individual attention for each of its patients. The hospital, in addition to its inpatient services, operates an emergency department and an urgent care center located two miles from the hospital across the street from a major shopping mall.
If all the above are answered so the individual’s I.D. is verified answered appropriately for all the questions then have the person sit in blood drawing chair.
Furthermore, a brief description of a Phlebotomist is simply someone who completes a venipuncture on another person. The basic daily functions of a Phlebotomist is to accurately collect the appropriate amount of blood for patient samples, treatment, prevention of disease, and medical laboratory testing purposes. Proper techniques include, cleaning puncture site, wearing gloves for protection agonist blood borne pathogens, applying pressure after the needle is removed. Failure to use proper technique during a venipuncture may result in bruising, inaccurate blood culture results, infection in or under the skin. Phlebotomists also preform sticks called “finger
Medical staff will clean and shave your groin or arm for the insertion of the catheter. A local numbing agent will be administered, but you will be awake during the procedure. Medicines for anxiety could be given if patient is having trouble relaxing during the exam. Next, a small catheter will be inserted into an artery. The doctor then uses x-rays to guide the catheter to the area of interest. Once the catheter is in place, dye will be inserted through tube. This allows for visualization of your blood vessels. Very minimal movement will be aloud during this exam to ensure safety and high quality images. This procedure could last one to two hours. If this is a planned procedure and not an emergency, this is normally only scheduled in the
A Phlebotomist is performing Venepuncture on a patient when the patient has a Vasovagal Syncope. The Phlebotomist checks the ‘Vital Signs’ to determine the state of the patients’ health using a Sphygmanomometer, the readings are as follow; Blood pressure 98/55, Pulse 135, Respirations 30 and temperature 37.8.
Now explain the procedure to the patient so that when the moment arises they are prepared as to what to expect. First you will put your gloves on, sit the patient down and apply the tourniquet to palpate the vein. The key to puncturing the vein is not by seeing it but rather by palpating it; this is the proper technique that is used when venipuncture. You will take a few second to examine and feel the vein; this will give you a clear vision of the depth and width. This step should not take longer than one minute. After you are positive about the puncture site, proceed with cleansing the area and allow the area to dry for thirty
When a patient enters the emergency room, they are registered and given an armband with their identification markers on this band. Nowadays, in most hospitals as with mine, this armband has a barcode on it. Once the physician has seen the patient, the doctor enters and lab request into the computer. The nurse for that patient can see these request and would then print the tube labels for each request. These labels have similar patient identifiers along with a barcode. The nurse would then confirm with the patient two of the identifiers to match the labels to that of the patient, obtain the specimen and places the labels on the tubes to be sent to the lab. This would be considered the pre-analytic phase.

In order to complete this task it is required to have the right equipment to do so. So one would have to obtain a straight butterfly needle. These are very sharp so they must be used with much caution. However, before picking the user must decide which size needle is appropriate. If the patient has small or fragile veins the best choice would be the smallest size possible. The user must then obtain a tourniquet to allow the veins to be seen easily when pressure is built up in the vein walls. It is also to prevent clotting, and this allows the user to obtain a usable sample. When these supplies are gathered the next step is gather the required tubes. The tubes are used to transfer the blood from the needle to the lab. Finally, the only other supplies needed are multiple alcohol wipes and several 1x1 gauze squares.

When blood is removed from a vein, it is called venipuncture or phlebotomy. Venipuncture should be performed with care. The veins of a patient are the main source of specimens for testing, the entry point of medications, and the site for IVs and blood transfusions. Because there are only a limited number of easily accessible veins in a patient, it is important that everything be done to preserve their good condition and availability. Universal precautions should be observed at all times. Gloves should always be worn when obtaining blood specimens. BEFORE BEGINNING ANY PROCEDURE—ACCURATELY IDENTIFY THE PATIENT ! Follow the proper protocol to identify the patient make positive identification of the patient by checking hospital armband for
