The stimulus was introduced to Yoamy and Jasmine by asking them to share what trips they went on this summer and which were their favorites. They were ecstatic and they immediately began to share their summer adventures. This 5th grade classroom has flexible seating, one of the sections in the classroom is by the library which has a couch, rug and table. I noticed that Yoamy and Jasmine usually choose to sit there during independent or group work. I wanted the students to feel comfortable enough to take risks with their language during this activity. Thus, I chose to conduct the LEA here, where they feel most comfortable and to make this activity student centered. As I recorded the students language in verbatim, I wanted to make sure that both students were participating in the discussion and were building on each others thoughts and ideas which is related to the language objective. To identify students’ individual language contributions I wrote the first letters of their names.Yoamy’s code is Y and Jasmine’s code is J. Before being, I made sure to say that they shouldn’t feel scared or embarrassed to contribute to the discussion because their opinions, thoughts and ideas matter and this is judgement free zone. I acted as a scribe, writing down everything the students said, on chart paper so they could see, helping the students meet the objective that oral language can be written down. The day after the Language Experience Approach was conducted I typed the language
English Composition I has developed my style of writing and my skills analyzing and researching topics to write a piece about a topic. Throughout the course, I got better at analyzing articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if needed. Before taking the English Composition course, I was not one to organize my essays in an ordeal order to clearly state the point of the work. Now with taking the course, I have learned to organize my essays, examine research for a topic, and develop an essay with proper mechanics, and revising skills. In writing my personal, review, analytical, and cultural
Tattoos have recently become increasingly popular in youth, due to the hidden meanings and symbolism that they are endowed with. Helen Day’s opinionative blog entry, The Power of Ink, asserts that the significance of tattoos have diminished due to the fashionable aesthetics that tattoos project. A highly casual, yet acknowledging tone characterises her blog entry, which is predominantly catered to young Australian readers who are interested in receiving a tattoo. Accompanying her blog entry is a number of comments which both support and criticise the new phenomenon of tattoos. Poignantly complementing her article is an image of Ta Mako tattoos, a Maori form of body art, and the front cover of the written work “No tattoos before you’re
The piece titled ‘getting our future back on the rails – slowly’ is written by a member of The Grow Slow organisation who believes that the most convenient occupant for the land of the abandoned railway yards is a community garden. The author begins the article in a confined toned aiming to convince the reader that a community garden is the right choice and later transfers on to a more critical tone when talking about convenient foods. The author’s main arguments include firstly that community gardens are a global trend and that their community should be one to follow such a trend, secondly a community garden will be beneficial to everyone and is the most efficient option and lastly community gardening will bring the whole community
The novel Mark Haddon has written contains a lot of meaningful ideas and has successfully written it in a way that is skilful and provides a variety of appropriate language and distinctive qualities that include diagrams, structure of the novel and narration. In doing that, it allows the audience to provoke thought and challenges them with profound views about the deep and meaningful ideas that are within the novel. The audience is introduced to different concepts such as Christopher’s struggles with the acceptance of truth, values of family relationships, growing up, and social interaction which are all evident in the novel and shown through Haddon’s use of different language and conventions.
When I originally was registering my class choices for the Fall 2016 semester, I considered English 111 to be an undemanding course that I could pass without a lot of effort on my behalf. I had no trouble passing prior English courses, years ago, so I felt this course would be similar. What I had not anticipated was how much I honestly could learn, such as: how you should properly cite sources, how you should suitably prove your thesis and how you can accurately set up the flow of a paper. Although, the most informative part of English 111, for me, has been absorbing all the information on the different styles of papers that can be written. I believe that recognizing the usefulness of distinctive varieties of papers will help me throughout
1. Frank is prompted to say this when he reminisces on the masters of his school and his father's words, of glorious death for Faith and Ireland.
Lancaster’s class communicate in a variety of ways ranging from talking using body language and mouthing words to all out yelling across the room, this behavior is evident in all of her classes. Standard English is not always used in this class between students, but between Lancaster and her students she prefers to use Standard English to communicate, but if she is in the middle of conducting and cannot talk she will use hand gestures to communicate. Also, conducting is her form of talking to tell her students to get louder, quieter, hold out notes, or stop playing or singing all together. In her class, no ESL students are enrolled, while there may be bilingual students, all of her students speak fluent English. Evans as a school offers foreign language classes that all students must attend for at least two years, but no “bilingual” courses are
The pre-service teacher believes that Serge was not assessed adequately. The test was not valid for Serge and with invalid information you cannot place a child based on the results. The mother also claimed that Serge was very intelligent at home and she feels that Serge was just having difficulties picking up the language. Even though the school tried their best to assess Serge and place him correctly, the test was not accurate on Serge’s capabilities. Serge was found to have an average range of intelligence after he took a nonverbal test, but when he took the verbal test they found that he had a learning disability. We have to remember that second language learners often do not verbalize a reply. Second language learners go through a “silent” period where they will write
Language has changed tremendously over the years which can be seen by the dwindling use of sophisticated vocabulary due to the fact that vocabulary used by other people has an influence on what words other people tend to use. Also, a person with higher authority, like the current President of the United States, language can cause a whole country filled with three hundred million people to say exactly what that person with power is saying. This is due to the fact that the leader has tremendous support which in result causes people to want to be like him/her. This changes their use of vocabulary which can cause an epidemic. In the case of President Trump, his simplified and overstated language is a true example of why sophisticated vocabulary
Overall, being able to compose an acceptable essay and fine tune my grammer are the most important goals I have this year, besides passing the AP English Language Test. Writing notes from a Powerpoint or collaborating in small groups is the ideal way for me to learn. In my opinion, discussions are only satisfying when everyone in class knows the material thoroughly. Also, this summer I studied SAT vocabulary which increased my ability to understand what I was reading and also apply those words in my conversations. You can support me by conducting vocabulary tests and timed writing assignments.
After figuring out what the “issue” was and what it surrounded. It put me in a place where I had to really pause and think about where to go with this issue my young person was facing. Which I then told her I understood where she was coming and I will try my best to workout the situation. For instance, I reframed her with the question on how would she feel if being heterosexual quote and quote was the wrong way of living and knowing that persons don’t accept her for who she is. I then gave her a few second to marinate the question which she took a while before responding with I understand, but the bible said it is wrongful for a person to be dating the same sex and that the right way to live was to date the person of the opposite sex and that her parents let her know it's wrong.I took a step back and reflected on how I use to think when I was younger and how my surrounding use to portray the LGBTQ community as something that was not the right style of living.
As one watches the first episode of season one; one could see Sheldon as an introvert. I saw the person as a guy that tends to want to keep certain aspects in his life the way it has been; never wanting someone new to intrude upon his daily life. It does seem however that Sheldon does give in to his roommate’s ideas from time to time for the sake of being a good person, but at the same time he gives his protest in his own way by giving some form of logic to any of his roommate’s ideas. It is fairly easy to see he voices his displeasure in participating on whichever he is asked to join with others, but in the form of logic he explains is unnecessarily long when in reality all he would need to say is no; Sheldon would often outright voice his thoughts in pointing out any flaws. No one in the cast seems to be angered by this at all, so I could assume that everyone just does not get annoyed much by him.
As language diversity in our country steadily increases, there is a clinical need for bilingual speech-language pathologists. Being bilingual and coming from a multicultural background I can personally relate to the struggles these populations face. Currently, misdiagnosis among bilinguals and culturally diverse populations diminish the quality of life experienced by this group. This can be attributed to inadequate diagnostic assessments. It is my firm belief that the amount of research needs to increase regarding diagnostic assessments in order to better serve these populations.
English 101 was a general education course I had to be enrolled in. I personally chose this section number because it was the last one available in the morning and didn't interfere with my job and other class. My overall experience was great, it's a great environment if you put the time and effort to advance in your reading and writing abilities. I believe I have came along way compared to the work and effort I gave in the beginning of the class. Looking back at what I've accomplished in this course I feel like an appropriate grade to receive would be a B.
Acquiring and learning a second language do not refer only to handling oral communication skills. It is more than that; it takes the students´ abilities in enhancing their lexicon, their management in syntax, and their perspective about words´ influences in people. Thus, summing this up, it is indispensable that ESL students have a grand deal about linguistic knowledge. In other words, ESL learners not only require speaking, but also reading, writing and thinking in English when they complete whatever English career.
