2. PURPOSE The purpose of this activity are to verifies various type of lathe and their basic construction. Apart from that, it also make us to be familiar for cutting and turning process In lathe. 3. EQUIPMENT Less tool are required to perform lathe activity. This is due to lathe machine itself provide a lot of multifunction features that can obtain various desired outcome for a workpiece. 3.1) Vernier caliper We used vernier caliper to measure the size of the object .Beside that ,it can be used to measure the length of the object, which specific size is 100mm and 25mm in diameter. 3.2) Lathe Machine

The cutting tool was aligned to the dead center. The machine was turned on. The carriage was moved to the left by rotating the hand wheel until the tip of the cutting tool touches the edge of the metal cylinder.

For safety reason, the workpiece were mounted with 0.5mm per run(safe operation). The machine then were run by cutting the whole workpiece for 20mm diamater. This process need to be done two times which one on the left hand side and the right hand side. The carriage need to be push to the left slowly. For 20mm diameter cut,we need to repeat 4 times because to follow the safe operation procedure. Step 6 below were repeated for cutting the 15mm and 10 mm diameter. The final workpiece is as per below:

In order to accomplish this objective, weight assigned are W1= -0.1, W2=0.25 and W3=0.65. As in Table 5 and in Fig. 3, the optimal machining parameters predicted using SA are work speed (Vw= 51.15 m/min), feed rate (f = 16.30 mm/min) and depth of cut (d = 0.01 mm) for a minimum surface roughness of 0.476µm. The first process examined uses the Lablond Lathe machinery and requires a machined diameter of 7.7250, plus tight tolerances of + .0005 inches. A Process Capability Ratio (Cpk) analysis of the lathe’s data, results in a Cpk of .379 (exhibit A). A result of less than one indicates the machine is not capable of matching the tolerances laid out in the IMS spec. Therefore the Lablond Lathe is not suitable to handle the process it is being used for. My primary research focuses on designing mechanical systems/components and investigating mechanical interactions between machine components. The treatments required a truly multidisciplinary research effort span the entire mechanical systems and solid mechanics spectrums of mechanical engineering. The research involved design, development, and experimental verifications of mechanical components and systems, and account for parameters that influence their interactions. My experience and knowledge has led me to expand my research to account for failure of machine components and systems with applications in automotive, aerospace, and oil and gas industries such as automotive brake systems and clutches, aircraft landing gears, and drilling downhole assembly.
NC Machining is a process used in the manufacturing sector that involves the use of computers to control machine tools. Tools that can be controlled in this manner include lathes, mills, routers and grinders. The CNC in CNC Machining stands for Computer Numerical Control. On the surface, it may look like a normal PC controls the machines, but the computer's unique software and control console are what really sets the system apart for use in CNC machining. Under CNC Machining, machine tools function through numerical control. I am in pursuit of a life where the education I choose lets me explore the wealth of knowledge and wisdom. I strongly recognize that manufacturing engineering is the domain where my purpose and passion mingle. It is my earnest belief that the education in manufacturing engineering that I have received until now has helped me to grasp the fundamental principles of the subject. This knowledge, when coupled with dedicated master’s study would be the ideal preparation for a career in applied research or academics in the manufacturing industry, a vast field of science from developing new materials to manufacture an aircraft. After giving a visit to an Aero India Show last year in Bangalore has, developed a curiosity in me to know the manufacturing world of an aerospace industry. It is for this reason that I wish to pursue a Masters course in Aerospace Engineering in the “Aerospace Structures and Materials track” from Delft University of Technology.
