Introduction

Leaders at all levels have a responsibility to assist and develop team members through coaching and guidance (Performance Coaching, Counseling and Leadership Principles - Leading Concepts, 2014). In order to be an effective leader, one has to focus on helping the individual with basic developmental needs and providing them with the tools to develop a plan. This plan will assist the individual with initiating a self-assessment to determine where they are now and where they see themselves in the future. It could also be a way of determining what it would take to reach these goals. Leaders have different personalities and leadership styles but serves the same purpose. According to a passage in a book written by Stephanie Stevens (2013), one of the former U.S. President John Quincy Adams described leadership this way: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” I can appreciate this statement because when assessing yourself as a leader, it requires a leader to consider the following: values, leadership style, motivations, and competencies. Values Values are important because they can be used to gauge the level of happiness an individual may have for their profession and personal life. Values that are important to me in my life are my family, job, business, friends, and service to others. I chose these values and in this order because my family has helped me through many
