Being a single ruler can be tough, especially when it comes down to making rugged decisions. Many rulers do not care what its peers think but, others have companions that work together and they share their opinions and understand each side to a decision. When a ruler is just by his or her self they only comprehend their opinions and do not care what the others may think. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, it shows what it is like for two leaders to work together and to be separated. In the book the two leaders were Jack a ruthless dictator whom only put his focus on hunting and Ralph who went by the rules he and the tribe made and focused not just on food, but shelters and all the resources a human needs in order to survive. …show more content…
For starters when Jack started to be addicted to hunting, he influenced many people such as Roger. When Jack started to hunt, he would take Roger and the choir to go with him and it led Roger to show his true colors. Roger ended up being this horrifying manslaughter. “ The newly beaten and untied Wilfred was sniffing noisly in the background,” Roger didn’t want to beat up Wilfred just to make all the rest of the islanders scared resisting to join Jack's tribe, he wanted them to be scared of him because he wanted to feel manly. Jack didn’t just influence people like Roger to kill, he also made many mistakes regarding running a tribe. For instance, when he first lived in castle rock he didn’t have no fire so what did he do? “ Two fingers rushed at the fire and he prepared to defend himself, but they grabbed half-burnt branches and raced away along the beach,” he ended up running to Ralph's tribe and stealing a burned log and using it as fire, but that's not all. He never kept the fire going so he had to go back and this time he stole Piggy's glasses whom is blind without them. Once Jack had gotten everything he was unstoppable. He had a fire, feast and hunters what more can a leader have. Well there is one thing, sympathy. Jack never used his emotions he used his opinions unlike Ralph, who used his emotions. Using emotions can be good and bad. It's good to show who you are and who you want to become but, it's bad when you use it to make others feel guilty just for not doing something you want done. Ralphed used his emotions constantly and it would work.He also used his emotions too much to the point where he was not strict and truthfully that's probably why he lost his tribe. Ralph only focused on keeping that fire going and with that he never focused on getting food. With trying to keep the fire going he ended up burning half the island three times and with that there was a
Jack is only interested in power, he acts like a dictator and doesn’t follow the communities thoughts. Some actions that Jack takes that shows this are "I got the conch," said Piggy indignantly. “You let me speak!” “The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain," said Jack, “So you shut up.” This shows how Jack acts like dictator because he doesn’t listen to what the people say. “He's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat. He isn't a perfect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. All this talk-.” This shows how Jack is power hungry and will basically do anything to get it, he is trying to make Ralph look like a bad chief in order for him to try to take the power away from him and get it for himself. “We’ll raid them and take fire. There must be four of you; Henry and you, Robert and Maurice. We'll put on paint and sneak up.” This shows how Jack uses his power to make his tribe members listen to his orders and steal the members of the other tribes. Jack is only interested in power and wants the power for his own
In our society we have our system for power set up making the understanding of who is in charge easy; However, when the boys are stranded on an island they are forced to come up with their own system, causing rivalries and corrupting rights and values. Before being stranded on an island Jack was an innocent, well-behaved child, however, when thrown into a foreign place with no society and no system of power it is very easy to destroy all of your innocence when obtaining most power. Jack was a hunter and was in charge of all the hunter, he eventually made his own tribe and almost everyone followed him, giving him a mass amount of control. Golding shows that Jack uses his power in ways only beneficial to him, easily seen when the remainder of Ralphs tribe approach Jacks and see him, “ painted up and wearing garland around his neck” (54). Jack uses his power to idolize himself and make the other
If you remember earlier in the book, Jack was told by Ralph to keep the signal fire burning. But instead of thinking of the whole group like a good chief would, He only thought about himself and what he wanted to do. “Jack checked, vaguely irritated by this irrelevance but too happy to let it worry him.” (Golding 69). This quote helps show that Jack is not a good leader. He cares more about what he wants than what the whole group wants making him the most irresponsible character in the book. With Ralph actually being the most responsible character in the book ,He is definitely the rightful chief but as we later learn, the right chief doesn't always get picked. Another example of Jack not being responsible as a leader was when the circle chant took place. “All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his knife. Behind him was Roger, fighting to get close. The chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or a hunt.”(Golding 114). This quote explains that if Jack were a proper leader he would not have let poor Robert almost get killed. Jack didn't even try to stop the feeding frenzy that was the hunters. In conclusion, with Jack's new power He does not take responsibility and is not a proper leader and is a great danger to many of the young people on the
Leadership takes notice, responsibility, self-development, and experience. Thoughts pop up when one thinks of a leader, perhaps a captain of a team, the president, maybe even the bigger brother. These people are mostly responsible and developed, they take notice into what is happening in any situation, but the experience is where a leader and a follower have things in common in most situations. Lord of the Flies is a book where children are trapped on a deserted island and have to create their own small world. Jack is one of the chosen leaders in the book, he came with most of the children from the plane crash. They soon meet Ralph, who is another chosen leader throughout the book. So called “leaders” in the book are very important characters
In the words of William Shakespeare, “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, many of the characters are faced with the responsibility of authority. Throughout the events of the novel, Ralph tries to keep his power. Jack works to gain power and the role of chief. Piggy, as opposed to Jack and Ralph, works to achieve respect. In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding effectively conveys the idea that the responsibility of leadership can weigh heavily upon those unfit for power, resulting in fractures throughout society.
Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. -Henry Ford (Brainyquote) In the Novel Lord of the Flies the boys come together, keep together, but then begin to become completely unglued. The boys come together at the start of the Novel when an election is held. This is the first time all of the boys on the island meet. Ralph wins the election by a landslide against Jack. Although, Jack wants to be the leader of the boys because he is already the leader of the choirboys, however the boys don’t select him. This causes a divide on the island, but doesn’t cause any problems yet. This foreshadows what will happen later in chapters four and five when the boys start to become divided. In this essay, the
Lord of the Flies is a dystopian novel by William Golding and published in 1951, shortly after the end of World War II. The novel follows the ventures of a group of British boys stranded on an island and seeks to address the root cause of the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph represents order and civilized society, while Jack represents Hitler and his fascist regime. Ralph’s shortfall lies in his myopic point of view, developed by his father’s influence. His lack of foresight in his leadership role results in the neglect of critical responsibilities, poor decision-making and a weak society, which then allows for the rise of Jack’s fascist regime.
First I will talk about my first piece of evidence about how Jack is an effective leader. “He’d never have gotten us meat. He isn't a prefect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing.” (Golding,PDF, 98) This quote shows that Ralph wouldn’t of done anything to hunt for meat for the boys on the island like Jack did. Ralph only worried about keeping the fire alive to have them get rescued, and not about hunting for food to stay alive. Also, you can’t just expect people to do orders when you don’t have anything to give them in return. Jack gave the other boys meat when he gave them orders. By Jack giving the
In the book “Lord of the Flies” there are several leaders for the children to choose from. These leaders are Meridew(or Jack), Ralph and Piggy. If I were in the book I believe that I would be the best leader.
Many people have many different views on what a leader is. Leaders vary from team captain to the President of the United States. Of course, the leadership skills a team captain have are much different from those of the President of the United States. In the book, Lord of the Flies, leadership skills show through many of the characters. Boys ages 6-12 years old are left to fight for their lives on an abandoned island after their plane crashes. At this age, some of the boys may think they deserve this position, but the boy with the best leadership skills needs obtain it for the good of the group. The characteristics of a leader in Lord of the Flies vary from being a good public speaker, to being brave and to being willing to listen to the others opinions.
To begin with, Jack is not a good leader because he is a savage. For instance, Jack enjoys the thrill of hunting and violence than following Ralph’s orders of rescue. Yet, Jack does not re-light the fire and implies to Ralph, “You should have seen the blood!” (Golding 74). He must re-light the fire on the mountain to be rescued, but Jack continues acting recklessly and hunting for pigs.
When it comes to survival, leadership is one of the most important aspects. Without a leader there are no rules, no one to take care of problems, and chaos will constantly be taking place. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, leadership is the main cause for everything that happens throughout the entire story. This novel largely represents what a good leader is; selfless, knowledgeable, and determined. Although there is no leader which stands out as the best, qualities of certain individual characters put together create the image of a great leader.
What makes a good team? A responsible leader who can manage the team well. That’s absolutely correct. What if the leader is excellent but the members don’t follow rules and ignore the leader’s instructions, can such team achieve success? Definitely not. In a broader view, societies are exactly the same. If a society is lacking good individuals, it cannot be good.
My definition of a leader is someone who takes charge, knows when to listen, and demands respect from other people around them. In the novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph displays all these qualities of a good leader through guiding the little ones, making sure the laws are in order, and making sure food and water is abundant. In Chapter 4, Ralph and Piggy spot a ship in the distance. Ralph runs up the entire hill to attempt to light a fire, so they can be rescued. This shows how he had the ambition to want to get off the island. Ralph was one of the most courageous characters in the novel. If I had to choose a character to follow in the novel, I would choose Piggy. Piggy was a quiet leader, overshadowed by Jack, who was a bully in the novel. Throughout the novel, Piggy always had the best ideas, but he was never able to really share them since Jack always was attacking him. For example, when they were working on the fire, Piggy suggested that the boys should build the fire on the beach, instead of the mountaintop. I would choose to follow Piggy because he made sure that the new ways of doing things could be something everyone could trust. I would also follow Piggy because he was kind, and was the most mature out of the group of boys.
The theme of leadership is uncovered by the symbol of the conch. As the connection grows between the protagonist and the conch, outer forces break the bond in attempt to take the position as leader. Ralph along with other boys in Lord of the Flies by William Golding are trapped on an island due to the crash of their airplane. With no adults on the island to discipline the boys, one must step up and take on this role. The discovery of the conch encourages Ralph to become chief, Ralph has the ability to use the conch to enforce his rules, but the unfortunate shattering of the conch breaks Ralphs hold on to leadership.
