Even not-for-profit healthcare organizations must make a certain dollar amount to stay in business. When becoming efficient with the spending and budgeting of an organization, waste can be easily eliminated from an organization. Cost is the other portion of the healthcare iron triangle which is directly tied to the financial status of an organization. The financial position of the organization is a direct indicator as to how the organization is operating. Quality or access can be improved at a healthcare facility, but it comes with a price. Therefore, the best CEO’s identify the priorities of the organization based on the financial position and exploit these opportunities. Focusing on finances and having a considerable ability to adapt to change are the two traits I hope to absorb when entering into the healthcare world. There are many other great traits to have for the skill set of any manager, but it is these two traits that can translate to any type of healthcare facility. This kind of humbleness creates a mutual respect between all of the employees. Being vulnerable also sparks motivation because it is a visible sacrifice the manager is making in order to better serve the employees of that organization. Leadership is defined as, "the process of engaged decision making linked with actions taken in the face of complex, unchartered, or perilous circumstances present in clinical situations for which no standardized solution exists" (). An example of this could be a nurse manager that is on a committee that researches ways to reduce the number of patients that develop ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). This nurse could brainstorm ideas and interventions, and then test these ideas until the committee agreed upon a certain protocol
In the preface of Followership, the author Tom Atchison, states the reason there has to be a dynamic followership and Leadership role it 's not that there 's a lack of effective leadership in healthcare, it’s that the current, worsening, issues are the moral and the staffing shortages of followers which result in a toxic work environment and the challenges on how followers overcome that while being a productive team.

There are several traits and strengths that these leaders will need for individual and the organizations to be successful. These future leaders will need to be independent thinkers that can bring fresh solutions to this new emerging healthcare market to help improve patient outcomes. In these changes, leaders will also need to understand value-based and be passionate about serving the needs of the customers, the patients. The future will require leaders to be able to motive and inspire others to achieve common goals. As population management grows and compensations methods change, healthcare leaders will need to be change leaders and create a change culture within organizations. The Oxford English Dictionary describes the word leader as a “person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” and describes the word manager as a “person responsible for controlling or administering all or part of company or similar organization”. Each of these meanings are very close in proximity however many in the business world have different definitions for each of these roles. Although they are different they are linked and are complementary to each other (Oxford Dictionary (American English)).
Leadership, management, and followership are three concepts which are all interrelated. Nurses do each of these in the workplace regardless of his/her position on the chain of command (Yoder-Wise, 2014, p.5).
1. When discussing leadership and followership, there is often a split in personal opinion when it comes to which one is more important. Leadership and followership both offer unique benefits in their own right and have supporting factors, which give them the perceived appearance of being more important. The focus for this paper will be to advocate the importance of followership over that of leadership. This will be accomplished by addressing the pros of followership to include some core skills of followership and the effects followership has on the development of a leader. The expectation of an officer however, places a high amount of emphasis on leadership more so than that of followership. Given this perceived importance of leadership as an officer, an effective leadership style will be explained and how officers develop this particular leadership style. While leadership has a distinct presence within the professional work environment, followership is considered the underlying backbone in developing an effective high performing team.
Leadership and management are similar; however, have different definitions. Some leaders have an innate ability to learn whereas others may have to learn how to lead. A manager may not be an effective leader. A leader must possess certain characteristics to be effective. Communication, fairness, and leadership knowledge are the top three characteristics of an effective leader.
Leadership is a vital characteristic to be successful. Managers are often called to act as both a leader and a businessman. Finding a balance between managing and leading can be the difference between success and failure. Managers are asked to control their employees and promote the welfare of the business. Leaders, on the other hand, focus on fostering their mentees welfare and turning weaknesses into strengths.
Though they are not entirely comprehensive tools, a great deal can be learned about a hospital or other healthcare organization for-profit or not-for-profit from an examination of their annual financial documents (Finkler & Ward, 2006). The balance sheet and statement of revenue and expense can both yield valuable clues even in the absence of other evidence about changes that might be occurring in the organization, a definition of the type and degree of certain problems that it might be facing, and potential opportunities for improvement in performance that might exist (Finkler & Ward, 2006). Comparing two or more years' worth of financial information yields even more valuable insights, tracking movement in the hospital or other organization's ability to finance its activities and thus continue providing services at the same level, quantity, and scope as current operation.
