Subj: LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY 1. Leadership is the measure of one’s ability to influence others to work to achieve a goal. I say that it is the measure of one’s ability because, a leader will always be judged and when described, will normally have an adjective prior to the word leader. Some examples are: He was a good leader or He was a horrible leader and could not lead ants to a cookie crumb. Influencing people is the primary purpose of a leader. To influence people, one must realize that every person is different and has their own motivating factors. In order to know what a person’s motivating factors are, a leader must know his people. Though, in this course it is said that the Coast Guard has leaders and managers, I would argue that to be a leader in the Coast Guard, one must also be a manager. A good leader could lead a group of people right off of a cliff, but should be able to manage the situation, circumstances and resources, so as not to lead his/her people off of the proverbial cliff. This can be seen in Leading Chiefs that do not manage their personnel allowance list (PAL), leading their unit into a very unnecessarily difficult transfer season. 2. During the course of my career, through two armed services, I have been influenced by numerous leaders. I can say, with absolute certainty, that everyone is an example. Not all of those examples are good and those can be the best form of influence. An example of what not to, do or be, can be more valuable than gold.
Leadership, which is defined as “…The action of leading a group of people or an organization” is used in many different ways. Most people think being a leader is mostly about being the boss, having people work under you and just becoming successful, but it boils down to more than that. Leaders are those individuals that actually utilize their many abilities in leadership and administration to help make a better change for themselves, the people around them and the goal that needs to be achieved. Leadership is not an expertise that can essentially be grabbed from a book or article based on leadership but instead it is one of those initiative abilities that are increased through experience and understanding those real life situations.
Effective leaders interact with their followers in a positive manner to learn about them on a personal and professional level (Colorado State University – Global Campus, 2016). The United States Coast Guard (USCG) refers to this type of communication as deck plate leadership. Deck plate leadership blends an interest in junior personnel’s professional development and well-being (Smith, 2010). Often, before one becomes an effective leader they participate in a follower role. The level of follower engagement may be a precursor to the type of leader they later will become. Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) C. MacInnes is the Executive Officer (XO) of Enlisted Personnel working directly for the commanding officer (CO) at the USCG Academy in New London, Connecticut (http://www.uscga.edu). LCDR MacInnes oversees several divisions at the Academy, meaning he has numerous direct reports. He is an example of a person in a leadership and followership role.
I had interviewed about leadership with Lee who is the manager of strategic planning in my company. To sum up the interview, he defined that leadership is causing other people to do what the leaders want. That is, leadership is helping other people to rise to their full potential while accomplishing the mission and goals of the organization.

The Leadership Philosophy of Senior Chief Eddie Diaz Eddie Diaz Coast Guard Senior Enlisted Leadership Course #63 I strongly believe everyone is a Leader; we all play an important role in the success or failure of each other and the Coast Guard. It is my duty as a Coast Guardsman to inspire greatness, develop a professional workforce, and foster a culture of prosperity poised to overcome today and tomorrow’s challenges, learning from yesterdays’ successes and failures. Throughout my career I have been greatly influenced by leaders with remarkable leadership qualities. A phrase I use often is “What do you think”.
Leadership influences: Throughout my Coast Guard career there have been numerous influences guiding my leadership direction. These leadership influences include family, friends, good and bad Coast Guard leaders, and most importantly my own self reflections. One can read, listen, and study every leadership principle from the most intelligent academic professionals, however I believe the best leadership teacher for me has been trial and error. The key is being able to learn from your leadership mistakes and move forward. Life for me is the best teacher over any book ever written about leadership.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.

Many say that leadership takes charisma or that some are natural born leaders; others may even add that leadership stems from a relationship of bestowing and taking from other leaders and followers. For George S. Patton, General and leader of troops he was a fearless transformational leadership that inspirited his Third army to achieve the impossible. Not every form of leadership can can command the fear and instant obedience of a U.S. Army general.
Leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing guidance, purpose and motivation. This idea of the leadership has been shaped and molded throughout my career, being exposed to the transition of the post 9/11 Coast Guard, experiencing multi-national operations/exercises on forward deployed assets, fostering relationships with inter-agency partners to effectively support counter terrorism and counter narcotic missions and developing processes at one of five Geographic Combatant Commands; has set the foundation for my own personal philosophy.

According to the Pettinger (2007), the leadership can be explained in several situations. First, the leaders have the responsible to provide vision and direction to the followers.
