Throughout the entire course of this class, I have been asked to fill out different self-assessments related to whatever topic or approach to leadership Peter Northouse (2013) was discussing in his book Leadership Theory and Practice. Each one of these self-assessments were intended to help me in discovering who I was as a person and a leader. Some of the leadership self-assessments included the Least Preferred Coworker Measure from the Contingency Theory chapter, the Leader-Member Exchange Questionnaire from the Leader-Member Exchange Theory chapter, and the Servant Leadership Questionnaire from the chapter that discussed Servant Leadership. Many of these questionnaires I found to be very effective in helping me discover more about my personality traits and leadership style.
Lao-Tzu’s “Thoughts from the Tao-te Ching” and Machiavelli’s “The Qualities of a Prince” both have the ultimate goal of making better leaders. The tactics that each writer chooses to present as a guide for the leader are almost opposite of each other. Today’s American government would benefit from a combination of the two extreme ideas. Lao-Tzu’s laissez-faire attitude towards the economy, as well as his small scale, home defense military is appealing to a liberal person. Machiavelli’s attitude towards miserliness and lower taxes, while being always prepared for war, would appeal to a conservative person. The writers are in agreement on some issues, such as
Since I was young I was constantly reminded of the old saying “be a leader, not a follower” and after years of not understanding the meaning I can now say I have gained the true understanding of this famous saying. Leadership is an important quality everyone must have to acquire the full meaning of life. I have a desire to spread positivity, confidence, and much more to others around me because being a leader is not about telling people what to do or how to do it, it is about encouraging people to be the best they can be in every domain possible. I am involved in a variety of extracurricular activities throughout my community and school such as, soccer, hockey, basketball, softball, and any other type of sport that comes up in our community and I truly feel this activities are the reason I am who I am today.
Through the analysis of the article An Ethnography of Wall Street with consideration of gender, one can seen that gender plays a significant role with big corporations such as the one discussed. It is stated with Karen Ho’s article that the majority of those in higher positions such as CEOs are white male, in comparison to those in lower positions which tend to be women and minorities. Placement of the building is described by the author to illustrate the segregation of people’s ranking in the corporate based on factors including gender, race and social class. Women are typically seen more in the back office of the corporation meaning that they
Performing an internet search for a definition of leadership pulls up a plethora of results, each definition slightly different from the last. The readings from the Leadership: Theory and Practice book also draw attention to the multitude of descriptions of leadership as well as the strengths, weaknesses and practical implications for several different leadership approaches. Specifically, trait, skills, style and situational. This paper will outline the implications of each of these models for my leadership profile and will also outline some insights that I have gained at the physician leadership level with my organization for each approach.
Power, influence, leadership ability, all these intertwine to make an effective leader; yet they are often confused as being able to stand alone to define a leader. Each element is needed to complete the other, thus this paper will look at how power is used as influence. Using Hackman and Johnson’s Personal Power Profile, my preferred method of influence will be examined and how this relates to future leadership will be discussed.
In the world we live in today the roles of power and leadership are often confused. Although they have similar meanings, they can be distinctly defined between the latter. The key difference between the two is the term of effect. Power is the exercise of leadership, and leadership is only defined if you have power. Leadership always involves attempts on a leader to affect behavior or a follower in a situation, whereas power is not equivalent with influence on another person’s behavior. Although power and leadership have similar meanings, they are certain differences that can point out what makes
This Leadership Theory and Practice class was not at all what I expected it to be, which is great. I had heard of other people who had taken this class previously with different professors and how all they did was write papers and honestly, hardly learned anything about leadership. This class thankfully had an easy work load which helped with my senioritus, but still challenged me to think about different leadership styles, concepts, and what it truly means to be a leader. I was able to hear the views of many other people especially those who were also in the class, but also from the different people we had interviewed for the assignment we had to present on. I learned a lot about leadership and I learned a lot about myself in a leadership
Chief King was promoted from the rank of deputy chief of the police department, and the outgoing Chief Mac’s right hand man, to chief of the department after a nationwide search. King is viewed by the rank and file officers as being part of the old guard and as someone who will not progress the department forward. In order for Chief King to gain the trust of his personnel he must employ several leadership theories.
Though the theories of leadership glorify factors, such as personal significance, timing, special skills, responsiveness, or power, as the qualities of a leader, I believe that neither of those factors are as essential as being personable. I believe being personable is the greatest determinant since a leadership position requires public speaking, either in the form of one-to-one conversations or to an audience. I believe that a leader should create an impression that will motivate and inspire others. Therefore, they should be able to create an impressive and enduring impression. Leaders should speak to others in a way that is respectful, friendly, and relatable. If they are unable to do so, then no matter how powerful or significant the individual, not a single person will follow, admire, or respect them.
Chapter sixteen discusses various leadership theories which can implemented by leaders to achieve success. The choice of leadership theory differs from leader to leader as they possess different vision and way of managing. A theory isn 't always perfect in itself, it is the endless effort of the leaders which makes the theory a perfect one. Two approaches of leadership that I prefer are Situational Leadership Theory and Servant Leadership Theory. Among many theories I prefer these two because I tend to practice those principles most of the time and I assume these are theories that I truly tend to continue in a long run.
Leadership is an often misunderstood concept. Many people confuse management and leadership, classifying them as being the same. While a leader can be a manager and a manager can be a leader, they are often two separate things. There are four main components of leadership that we will discuss and there are many different ways to view and examine leadership with theory and maxim being the main methods.
A large amount of credit is given to Bass 's transformational leadership theory identifies four aspects of
Leadership is known as the process of guiding groups, individuals and an organization in the establishment of goals as well as sustaining those goals. The concept of leadership incorporates a diversity of clarifications, leadership styles and theories. While looking at the leaders around us no matter if it’s our president or place of employment, we often find ourselves questioning exactly why these individuals shine in these positions. This essay will detail my leadership in relations of the transformational leadership style and a plan of action that will improve my leadership and motivation skills.
Leadership theories are attempts to answer some of the question people have about leadership. These theories range from simple “armchair philosophies” about the personal characteristics and effect relationship between leaders and followers and situations.
