Left and Right Brain Dominance and the Impact on Learning The idea of left-brain and right-brain dominance derived from a study performed by a neuropsychologist by the name of Roger Sperry (1954). Based on this study it was gathered that each person learns and thinks by using mainly one hemisphere of their brain. Some people are right-brain dominant and some are left-brain dominant. There are also some that think with part of each side. These people are referred to as middle-brained or whole-brained thinkers. Research has shown that right-brain learners are more intuitive and spontaneous people. (Oflaz, 2011) In essence, if you were to ask a left-brained person to put their ideas into words they would be able to do so without much problem. They tend to choose the best wording to convey their ideas. In this same study, right-brained students showed to be less serious-minded, more humorous, and more creative. (Oflaz, 2011) While a right-brained individual is good with imagination, creativity, and art, they have a hard time putting these ideas into words or in writing. They would fare better by drawing a picture or diagram. They also recalled faces rather than names and pictures rather than words unlike the left-brained students.(Oflaz, 2011) If one was to ask a right-brained individual to describe an event, for example, it is highly probable they would create pictures of the event in their minds and use this to recall the information. This study, like many others, merely helps to reiterate the initial study of brain dominance by Roger Sperry. These studies are important pieces of information for a student, teacher, or tutor. As a teacher or tutor, in order to cater to a wide range of students, whether left, right or middle-brained, it would benefit them to examine which side of the brain is dominant in them(Connell, 1999) Ultimately it would have an impact on the teaching methods used. Yarnell’s response to her friend made me stop and think if it is just that simple, to think differently. When I get stressed out over something and let my emotions take over I usually just let them control me. Now after hearing Dr. Yarnell, every time and become emotional I am going to remind myself to just move into the left side of my brain. Hopefully by doing that I will be able to think more logically. I have heard of this concept before, but I did not have a full understanding on what it really meant. For many decades people have been considered to be either right or left side dominant in regards to brain function which came with defined roles such as “creative” or “analytical”. This thinking tends to be over-simplified as most people use their entire brains daily (Jensen, 2010). On the other hand people do use different parts of their brain for different tasks according to how they perceive those tasks.
Some traits that are associated with the right brain are: Holistic: processing information from whole to part; sees the big picture first, not the details. Random: processing information without priority, jumps from one task to another. Concrete: Process things that can be seen, touched, real objects. Intuitive: processing information based on whether or not it feels right, know the answer but not sure how it was derived. Nonverbal: processing though as illustrations. Fantasy-Oriented: processing information with creativity, less focus on rules and regulations.
In the Conceptual Age, it will not longer suffice to rely heavily on the logic of the left brain. Computers, cheaper sources and labor will continue to lead to outsourcing of this work; instead, creativity and innovation will give rise to future development. To prosper in the Conceptual Age, people will need to weave together the logic of the left brain (L-directed thinking) and the creativity of the right brain (R-directed thinking).
Left-right brain dominance is about the fact that the distinct hemispheres influence thinking. The left hemisphere is associated with logical, analytical thinking and a linear approach to problem solving. The right hemisphere is associated with creative, intuitive and value-based thought process. It is important to note that everyone uses its both hemispheres, but to varying degrees.
