People have raised some concerns regarding same-sex marriage. The Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund has responded to some of these issues. Some people feel that marriage is a traditional union and that same-sex marriages would “ruin” the tradition. The Lambda
This is a comprehensive source of information on same sex marriage and gay rights. It contains unbiased, general explanations of the issue as well as scholarly opinions presenting the pros and cons. This source also refers to same sex marriage legislation in other parts of the world. For example, it describes the “homophobic climate of Uganda and other African countries,” and traces gay marriage customs back to the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Hungary. This source also compares the option of civil unions to the legalization of same sex marriage.
Gay marriage has been one of the most common topic under discussion, arguments and quarrels since couple of years in almost every nation of the world. Looking deep down to the region of United States, same-sex marriage or gay marriage has not been legalized and documented in most of its jurisdictions. However, it is prudent to note that with the beginning of the twenty first century, only a few of US states have legally recognized the gay marriage through court verdicts and legislative proceedings and have lawfully allowed the gay people to get into a relationship (Wolfson 2004).
In the past few decades, the question of allowing for same-sex marriage is a recurring topic of controversy. In the houses of same-sex couples, the need for equal rights is of great importance. Currently, many states ban the marriage of same-sex couples and do not view a marriage between same-sex couples as an official marriage. These states quote the Constitutional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Therefore, with this definition, the marriage of a man and a man or a woman and a woman is unconstitutional. As of the issue date of this article, the Supreme Court had not made a national decision on same-sex marriage and the benefits entitled to that marriage. This CQ Researcher journal focuses on the topic of
Legalizing gay marriage has given America a troubling debate throughout a majority of the states. With only thirty-seven states allowing legal gay marriage, the other thirteen have either banned it or are still deciding (unknown, 2015, para 1). Gay marriage is seen as different and wrong to so many people in America that is has become sickening. People do have their differences and as Justin Timberlake once said, “We’re people and we’re different, all of us. And we should be using our differences to bring ourselves closer together” and with this being said, everyone is equal to one another in different ways (Timberlake, 2014, 10). For example, two people could have two different religions, which is different, but also equal in the sense
Constitutional rights for same-sex genders to marry their life partner as tax paying citizens with equality is the platform for the LGBT community. Government forums voice their concerns to decide the union between people unless outside the obvious a cousin, niece, family, etc. shouldn’t be a political battleground. However, it understandable
In the minds of many people, same-sex relationships is and will not be accepted here in the Philippines being a Catholic country and there is a clear border between men and women and no cross-over in between. This may be understandable given the way most of us have been raised, but discomfort doesn’t justify discrimination. Discrimination only applies when they will not be allowed to enjoy basic rights given to men and women.
In 26th June, 2015, same sex marriage has become legal throughout USA, it became the 5th American country which recognizes same sex marriage. It draws public attention back on whether the same sex marriage challenges heteronormative assumptions within society or not again. In the following paragraphs, the essay will discuss first what is a heteronormative assumption in the society and why the marriage of same sex couples with impact society norms, followed by the evidence that support the notion, and also the counter attack towards the argument, finally, the evaluation will illustrate both opinions and come to a conclusion.
The political aspects of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to federal and government recognized marriages are a very complex issue. There are basically two sides to the political argument of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. On one side are the liberals who feel that marriage is a civil right that should be denied based on the basis of a person's sexual orientation. On the other side you have conservatives who feel that marriage is an institution in which should only constitute one man and one woman. In this report we are going to examine how the issue of same-sex marriages are affecting our current political environment, how politics is affecting the movement for
The realization of the homosexuality in the modern western world as a cultural, sexual and a social category has been a result of complex power relations that surround sexuality and gender. The acceptance of homosexuality in the society has met its fair share of resistance and skepticism. The view that homosexuality can be in the same league as heterosexual has led it to be viewed as a normal behavioral and moral standard (Gallagher & Baker, 2006). Inasmuch as the skeptics may not want to accept the existence of homosexuality studies show that the habit is rampant today with many gay people coming out in the open. Of interest is the political acceptance of homosexuality with passing gay rights so that it can be recognized by law. This move has given homosexuals the ability to engage in legal entities like marriage (Gallagher & Baker, 2006).
Recently, the same-sex marriage vote becomes a very hot issue in Australia. While the several topics related to LBTIQA+ group also attracts people’s attention. According to LGBTIQA+ Group (n.d.), the term LGBTIQA+ refers to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and other diverse sexual orientations and gender identities respectively. It is noted that in 2014 in Australia, there are nearly 11% of the whole population recognized them as having diverse sexual orientation or gender identity (Australia Human Right Commission 2014). Even though the percentage of LGBTIQA+ group in the whole population in Australia is significant, there are still lots of difficulties to solve. It is
Many people argued to make the best decision from all points of view. Arus Pelangi Community and all pro LGBT community, with the name of human rights doubt with Indonesia‟s society and culture in which most of them deny the legality of same sex marriage. The main reason of LGBT community‟s struggle in legalizing same sex marriage is the thought of the same sex preference are nature. However, the reference of this assumption is still in doubt.
In the new age of same sex marriage and more people being part of the LBGT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community, society has become more accepting of same sex couples in some ways and not in others. Recent events such as marriage, health benefits, television programs, raising children and even the presidential campaign has been changed based on the acknowledgement of same sex couples. The attitude of the population is controversial, some people are for it, others against it, and some are on the fence. Disapproval can stem from things, such as traditional marriage, religious beliefs, having children and simply moral standards.
The same-sex marriage issue has ignited worldwide. Joseph Chamie- the previous director- and Barry Mirkin-the previous Population Policy Section Chief- of the UN’s Population Division aim to present up-to-date statistics and information on the same-sex marriage debate in “Same-Sex Marriage: A New Social Phenomenon.” They mention that same-sex marriage is a “recent phenomenon” that will possibly stick around for years in many countries because societal, religious, and legislative controversies continually revamp its debate (544). The issue is labeled “recent” because “…SSM [same-sex marriage] did not exist until the twenty-first century when an increasing number of countries began permitting same-sex
