It’s not hard to say that America has come so far into society and our freedom. How can our country forget when slavery ended in 1865 and gave women more rights in 1920. However, over time America has ignored the basic rights of transgender people. Transgender people are not any different from African Americans, or women. Why should they be treated any different, they're humans just like everybody else. They deserve the same basic treatment as a human rather than being treated like they're not from this planet. There are transgender people today who are getting harassed and tormented for just going into the bathroom for what they identify as. They should be able to go into a bathroom for which gender they identify as. Rather than making special bathrooms for transgender people that make them stand out and feel like they’re labeling themselves for using.

Sadly, until this problem is fixed, LGBTQ+ people will still discriminate against because of people standing up for Religious Freedom. 64% of LGBTQ+ kids feel unsafe in their school because of their sexual orientation, and 44% feel unsafe because of their gender identity. The LGBTQ+ community fair for them to be discriminated against, but this country was founded on Religious Freedom, so it isn’t fair for people of faith to go against their beliefs. Until this problem is solved, LGBTQ+ people, kids, and adults, will be bullied and discriminated against, and people of faith will feel their rights aren’t protected.

The LGBT community in the United States has always had massive difficulty fitting into our society. For many years they put up with constant mistreatment and other forms of abuse coming from the those who do not agree with their lifestyle. They have for long advocated for the acceptance of their existence and punishment for crimes committed against them. One of the hardest battles the community has had to face was the right to marry in a society that still holds the values of a traditional relationship which is between a male and female. The struggle was quite harsh but it all paid off by 2015 when the supreme court granted gay couples the right to marry. This historical decision did not go without outcry and criticisms. Most of the dissatisfaction came from those who hold very religious values and beliefs that claims homosexuality is a sin. Religion has always been a part of the American way of life since the nation's founding and with that homosexuality has been demonized throughout our society. Now that gay couple possess the legal rights to have a marriage license, religious companies and/or stores are now denying service to LGBT couples as they believe it sinful on their behalf to even take part. Many people gay or straight who fought for gay rights believe these is pure discrimination and that stores should not have the right to deny service for any customer for any reason. Not for an evanescent second should a single child/teen be judged,bullied,or ignored due to their sexallity or gender idenification. In every school the students should never feel unsafe, if they do it means that they won’t focus and they might not even show up. LGBT youth should be treated the same as their peers, to do so is to show acceptance and safety. This school year the Smithville High school created a new club appropriately titled “The Gay Straight Alliance”. Showing students that Smithville High School is an open minded and accepting place even though it might not always seem like it. Clubs such as this are allowing for all types of students to join forces and better their experience. It’s clubs and movements like this that should be spread across the nation as it will better the country and show those around the world that they can be wholeheartedly free. Although there are schools showing support it is still an issue in public settings such as stores. The biggest “issue” is bathrooms, should transgender people use the bathroom of their biological gender or the one they identify by? The current context of LGBTQ+ and women’s rights such as abortion with the recent election of President Trump was the inspiration for my research. I feel it is important for everyone to know when there has potentially been a violation of right’s, no matter the side one person and one vote can make a difference in so many lives. We are currently in a very progressive era in the United States of America. Our country is rapidly changing due to the much larger diversity of humans who have immigrated and settled here in the last fifty years. Most of the conservative, traditional citizens in America are not pleased with the diverseness that has been created. Even in the twenty-first century, society tends to have a hard time accepting the LGBT community, although it is slowly changing. There is, of course many, many years of morals and values that have been passed down from generation to generation and some of these do not include the acceptance of the LGBT community. It is clear to us that the people who do not accept these issues, also do not want to accept LGBT people into their community and do not want to allow them to spread their knowledge. The criticisms and barriers that the dominant culture in America has presented toward the LGBT community has made it almost impossible for LGBT educators to feel welcome and safe in their schools and neighborhoods.

Many LGBT have to face discrimination while trying to attend and can be such a huge obstacle to try to receive an education when you have to go to a hostile work environment every day.
