Lifeboat: there’s room for if not some but all us. In his piece about hunger and poverty, Hardin argues that we have no obligation to help poor nations. With a consequentialism prospective, Hardin argues that rich nations such as the United States, giving to poor nations has devastating consequences, specifically in countries/nations where overpopulation cannot be controlled. Hence, people in rich nations have an obligation not to help others in such countries (645). His argument is founded on the metaphor of a lifeboat (646). He recognizes that about 2/3 of the world is severely impoverished, while 1/3 is rich if compared to those in poor countries. In Hardin's argument, he states that we should live by lifeboat ethics because if we were to share with countries that have less resources and are poorer, we will eventually lose our resources due to something such as the "tragedy of the commons." I believe that such a statement is highly over-dramatized, selfish, and unreasonable for two reasons: 1.) When Immigrants migrate to the United States, they help our society flourish and continue to work well because they tackle jobs that most Americans would not do. Therefore, they help us to gain more resources by aiding in the efficiency of the economy so that we may continue to make more resources. And 2.) "The tragedy of the commons" is not very likely to occur as immigrants continue to arrive in the U.S. because as stated in his argument, wealthy nations population do not grow as nearly as fast as poor nations do, thus this allows for immigrants to migrate over to the U.S. without us having to fear that we, too, will become overpopulated and endure an insufficient amount of resources.
The natural reluctance to helping people who ae starving and dying across the globe, and the difficulty of rallying everyone to help these people, I think boils down to the fact that inside most people think that they're already trying their best.
