The novel, Like Water for Chocolate written by Laura Esquivel is a nail biting, tear jerking, and infuriating piece of work. The story is told with a couple big, noticeable themes such as, family and love. Esquivel was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico which is where most of her novels take place. In all of her works, Esquivel likes to look into a male and female relationship, and Like Water for Chocolate is no exception. This novel takes place in Mexico during the transition to the twentieth century. Overall, this book was very thoughtfully and thoroughly put together. It displayed various emotions within each chapter and always made sure the reader was involved.
In this novel, the reader gets to meet Tita De La Garza. Tita is the youngest daughter of her family, resulting in her being forbidden by her dictatorial mother to marry her lover, Pedro Muzquiz. In chapter one it mentions, “Mama Elena took comfort in the hope that she …show more content…

This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for both Tita and her mother. Tita completely loses it and is forced away into an asylum where Dr. Brown takes her under his wing. He takes her to his house and ultimately cares for Tita until she is mentally and physically stable. Tita swears that she is to never return to the ranch but that promise is quickly broken when her mother gets severely ill. Because of her good heart, Tita offers to care for her mother only to be rejected once again. Mama Elena is convinced that Tita has poisoned her cooking, therefore refusing to eat it. Post Mama Elena death, Tita gets engaged to Dr. Brown only to find out that her sister and first love, Pedro are returning to the ranch. Pedro ends up stripping Tita’s virginity, forcing conflicting thoughts about her engagement. She quickly realizes that she is pregnant with Pedro’s baby, resulting in the ghost of her recently late mother to appear and curse both Tita and the
