Intro to History
I pledge to follow the Honor Code by refraining from lying, stealing, or cheating. I pledge that I have not and will not receive any unauthorized help on any assignment or assessment. The Bible provides much information on ancient history and the ancient Hebrews, but we can not verify the truth behind many of the passages from the Bible.. Few evidence has been found to support much of what the Bible states as history, and many people doubt the actual cosmos of the Hebrew people, meaning they doubt that Yahweh actually even existed. The combination of archaeological evidence and Biblical stories allow for some confirmation of the truth, including the origins of Abraham, the Hebrews’ journey into Canaan, the flaws in the Hebrews’ monotheism, the destruction of Solomon’s temple, the conquering of the Israelite kingdom, and the evidence of Israel’s waning power following the death of Solomon.
The origins of the Hebrews can be traced back to Abraham, who the Bible depicts as the patriarch of Judaism. Yahweh promises to Abraham and his descendants the land of Canaan, saying “[t]o your offspring I will give this land” (Gen. 12:7-8). Abraham lived around the year 4000 B.C.E., and the Bible claims he lived in Ur, an ancient city in southern Mesopotamia, on a former branch of the Euphrates river. Archaeologists estimated the size of Ur to have been around 25 acres. The Bible described Abraham’s journey from Ur to
John Oswalt, in his book The Bible Among the Myths, presents his position to the reader that the bible is different and separate from other writings of the Ancient Near East. He asserts the Bible is both historically accurate and theologically sound. He makes the defense the Bible was divinely inspired and revealed to humanity and unique from other Ancient Near East literature. There was a time when the Bible, and the Israelite religion was different from its neighboring societies. But as times have changed, many people now lump the bible with other Ancient Near East myths.

Judaism being the oldest out of these three dominant religions was developed in the “third millennium BCE” (130). Canaan is where the Hebrews first prospered, until around 1500 BCE. At this time a famine struck, and influenced the Jewish people to move to Egypt. Egypt was lead by the Hyksos, which shared languages and cultural beliefs with the Hebrews. In Egypt “the Hebrews thrived over the next few centuries, until the Egyptian overthrew the Hyksos and enslaved the Hebrews” (130). At that time Moses (a man lead by God), rallied the Hebrews and helped them escape the slavery they endured in Egypt.
The Hebrews came from the lineage of Abraham. Abraham was a man of a monotheistic God. He was promised a nation by his God. The Hebrews were traders and herders that communicated in Hebrew. They originated in East Asia, but moved to Canaan their promised land. Canaan is modern era Lebron, Israel, and Jordan. They lived there for a hundred years. After a hundred years they experienced a drought that caused a famine so they moved to Egypt for refuge. The Hebrews suffered in Egypt because many of their people were in enslaved and forced into hard labor. They were led into freedom with the help of Moses and Joshua. So they returned to Canaan. The Hebrews fought to take back their land, but they we successful. 2
Hebrews formed a loosely organized confederation after they returned to Canaan to rejoin other Hebrew tribes. They lasted for about two hundred years, until they got closer under a king. David and his son Solomon reign in the tenth century B.C. Israel got to its best moment when the Hebrews were under Solomon’s kingdom. The disintegration of the Jew community started during the first half of the fifth century
The Hebrews and Assyrians had major influences on the history of western civilization. They were both Semitic- speaking people who were involved in united kingdoms. The history of the Hebrews is widely recognized with religion and their traditions which were included in the Hebrew Bible, but from a Christian standpoint, their history could be more recognized in the Old Testament. Describing themselves originally as nomads organized into clans, the Hebrews’ tradition states that they were descendants of the patriarch Abraham, who had migrated from Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan, where they became identified as the “Children of Israel” (Spielvogel p. 33).In comparison to the Hebrews, the Assyrians were also very religious. “What gave identity to the Assyrians themselves was their language…”(Spielvogel p. 42).

The monarchy of David and Solomon as described in the Old Testament as a regional power was in reality a small tribal kingdom along with the lack of evidence that the Temple of Solomon ever existed. Archaeologists have found no historical or archaeological evidence to back the biblical narrative of the Exodus, the Jews' wandering in Sinai or Joshua's military conquest of Canaan. Concerning the Temple of Solomon, it is the opinion of archaeologist and historian Israel Finkelstein, currently there is no archaeological evidence to prove the existence of the Temple of

The Torah states that Israel was a large kingdom that ruled from Egypt to Mesopotamia and was ruled by the kings named Saul, David, and Solomon. In 1993, archaeologists discovered an inscription which dates about 840 B.C.E. that mentions a “House of David,” which supports the Torah’s claim. In addition, the Torah describes a construction project that Solomon undertook to erect gates in the Israelite towns. Archaeologists have found gates matching the description in three settlements and dated those gates in the 10th-century BCE. These two pieces of evidence suggest that the kingdom of Israel existed and that David and Solomon were rulers of it.
The Mesopotamian people settled into their homeland Ur. In Ur they found religion, calling themselves Hebrews modern day Jewish peoples. Abraham leads the migration from Ur to Israel in 1900 B.C.E. In 1300 the Hebrews migrated to the “Land of Milk and Honey”. This milk and honey paradise was

Basically it all goes back to a guy named Abram. He lived a normal life as the head of his tribe, and believed in a God who could talk to him. One day, God told Abram that he would be the chosen father of God’s people.God changed his name to Abraham-meaning father of many nations, and promised that their homeland would be Canaan. He is known as the first chosen Jew. He had two sons, Isaac and Ishmael. Ishmael was his illegitimate son. Isaac had two sons, Jacob and Esau. Jacob’s name changed to Israel, and he had 12 sons, called the tribes of Israel. These 12 sons lineage back to Abraham makes them known as the patriarchs of Judaism. Israelites worshipped God by burning and sacrificing animals. They also might have kept a Sabbath day. The Book of Genesis attaches this custom to creation, when God rested on the seventh day after laboring. At this point, the descendants of Jacob were held in slavery in Egypt. A man named Moses worked with God to deliver the Israelites from Egypt, who was the most powerful nation in the world. Moses was found by Pharaoh’s
