In the epic poem, The Inferno of Dante, Dante Alighieri exemplifies the opposing forces of godliness and evil through the motif of physical darkness and light and their effect upon Dante the pilgrim. Dante’s Inferno follows the allegorical journey of Dante, who loses sight of the true path, representing good faith, and must travel through hell, among other places, to return to the path by trusting God and avoiding sin. Canto I of the story involves Dante, in the middle of his life where he has both human experience and time to improve, lost in the dark wilderness, threatened by beasts and unable to escape. In fact, darkness pervades in the first thirty-four cantos of the Comedy. It is important to note that Dante considers darkness to be the lack of natural light, as Throughout the Inferno, Dante uses the setting of darkness to represent both sin and sin’s deceiving nature. In doing so, Dante argues that to successfully have faith in God, one must discern the truth from among the darkness which permeates both Hell and humanity.
Smiling.. Shaking head, and acting like everything is understood and okay is a common gesture people show when they are told something they are incapable of putting together or understanding. This feeling of cluelessness or embarrassment most commonly occurs when someone uses an allusion to describe a noun. Most people use allusions everyday and have no idea that they are doing so. Allusions are an excellent way to build someone's confidence or put them in down in a sneaky and sly way. Using allusions is quite simple; comparing someone or something that has a specific representation or meaning to a person or group. This allows: authors, friends, and even enemies to indirectly imply a reference. The Book Dante’s inferno is filled with a plethora of allusions from small references to big that take a significant amount of elaboration and background knowledge to understand completely. Including Greek emperors and queens being alluded including: Virgil, Pope Celestine V, and many others.
The Inferno is a tale of cautionary advice. In each circle, Dante the pilgrim speaks to one of the shades that reside there and the readers learn how and why the damned have become the damned. As Dante learns from the mistakes of the damned, so do the readers. And as Dante feels the impacts of human suffering, so do the readers. Virgil constantly encourages Dante the pilgrim to learn why the shades are in Hell and what were their transgressions while on Earth. This work’s purpose is to educate the reader. The work’s assertions on the nature of human suffering are mostly admonition, with each shade teaching Dante the pilgrim and by extension the reader not to make the same mistakes. Dante views his journey through hell as a learning experience and that is why he made it out alive.

This fictional poem is a narrative. In the poem Alighieri made his own character symbolic to the Human soul and his idol, Virgil, symbolic to human reason. Together they journey through the Nine Circles of hell. Dante is able to complete his journey through hell because Virgil helps him through.
After crossing the Phlegethon, Dante the Pilgrim and Virgil cross into a dark forest where there are “no green leaves, but rather black in color, no smooth branches, but twisted and entangled, no fruit, but thorns of poison bloomed instead” (Dante, Inferno 186). The forest is depicted this way to give a picture of the barren nature of suicide. Dante sees the Harpies nesting and tearing at the trees surrounding them, “....in Greek mythology the Harpies are storm-winds which act as ministers of Divine vengeance, mysteriously snatching offenders away out of the visible world” (Dartmouth). The Harpies are a depiction of how those who commit suicide snatch themselves away from the visible world. He hears wails of torment within the woods all around him and Dante is confused by the noise and its origin. He first thinks that the yelling comes from individuals hiding behind the trees, but learns the truth once prompted by Virgil to break a branch. Dante tears off a piece of a “great thornbush.” The emphasis on the size of the bush may be a way to signify the importance of the man entrapped inside it, possibly like Medieval art in which artists stress the importance of a specific character by making it larger (Dartmouth). To Dante’s surprise, blood began to spew out of the branch, and the tree starts to speak directly to the Pilgrim. This tree, named Pier, committed suicide after being accused of treason. There is no place. In fact, one can only think of the complete opposite, whether it is a Hell filled with neglect, pain, disgust, or a never-ending life of horror. We as humans often sin in our everyday lives. The journey to overcome these sins is long and grueling just like it was for Dante. In the Inferno, the Dark Wood serves as the path of sin and darkness we must venture through. Dante who exemplifies naiveness and curiosity is overpowered by the She-Wolf who represents the source of all the sin in the world.
In The Inferno, Dante explores the ideas of Good and Evil. He expands on the possibilities of life and death, and he makes clear that consequences follow actions. Like a small generator moving a small wheel, Dante uses a single character to move through the entire of Hell's eternity. Yet, like a clock, that small wheel is pivotal in turning many, many others. This single character, Dante himself, reveals the most important abstract meaning in himself: A message to man; a warning about mankind's destiny. Through his adventures, Dante is able to reveal many global concepts of good and evil in humanity.
Journeys can be taken many ways. Some people take the path less traveled and some people take the easy way out. Dante happens to be on journey that is less traveled, by exploring the depths of Hell in the Inferno. The epic poem’s story is about self-realization and transformation. It sees Dante over coming many things to realize he is a completely different person from the start of the Inferno journey. Dante sees many things that help him gain courage in order to prove to himself and the reader that accepting change and gaining courage can help one to grow as a person and realize their full potential. After seeing people going through certain punishment Dante realizes that he must not seek pity on himself and others in order to fully realize his true potential.
Dante’s Inferno begins in a dark forest, a place of confusion, because he lost his way on the “true path”. Seeking an escape, Dante finds a hill where the sun glares down on him. This light seen in Dante’s Inferno symbolizes clarity as the sun represents God. After encountering three beasts and turning back to the murky forest, Dante crosses paths with the great Roman Poet, Virgil. Virgil is an aid and guide to Dante to Heaven, the ultimate Paradise. He warns Dante he must pass through Hell and Purgatory in order to reach his salvation in heaven. Virgil is depicted as nature or human reason perfected by virtue. It is strongly emphasized that Virgil can only take Dante so far in his journey by guiding him to heaven. Much like St. Thomas Aquinas’ reasoning, nature or human reason can only bring you so far in the journey to God. As Virgil and Dante approach the mouth of Hell, Virgil preaches to Dante about a woman in Heaven who took pity upon Dante when he was lost in hell. The woman Virgil speaks of is Dante’s departed love Beatrice. After Dante hears that Beatrice is heaven he now sheds the fear of traveling through Hell and Purgatorio.
At the same time, however, the religious function of Dante’s poem must not be neglected. In the opening lines of The Inferno, Dante embarks on a journey and finds himself “in a dark wood, for the straight way was lost” (Inferno, I, 2-3). Dante’s description of the dark wood indicates the lack of God’s light, and thus informs readers of the life he lived in the condition of sin. When you think of Hell, what do you see, perhaps a burning pit full of criminals and crazed souls? Or maybe you’re like Dante and have a well organized system of levels in correspondence with each person’s sins. In Dante Alighieri’s epic The Inferno, Dante and his real life hero, Virgil, go on an adventure through a rather elaborate version of Hell. In this version of Hell numerous thoughts and ideals are brought to the attention of the readers. Through Dante’s use of both imaginative and artistic concepts one can receive a great visual impression of how Dante truly views Hell, and by analyzing his religious and philosophical concepts the reader can connect with the work to better understand how rewarding this work was for the time period.
As it is known, the work is divided into three parts – Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Hell for the author does not represent an embodied place. It is rather a state of the soul of the man with sins who is tormented restlessly by repentance. The poet populated the circles of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise guided by his antipathies and sympathies, perceptions and ideals. In my opinion, Heaven in The Divine Comedy personifies beauty and love. Readers meet Beatrice for the first time in this part. For me, this girl is a symbol of worship, eternal goodness, and divine love not attained by human wisdom. The author is greatly inspired by the height that he manages to reach and this feeling is transmitted to me. Dante, looking at Beatrice, rises from heaven to heaven. He does not feel the flight but only sees that his companion’s face has become even more beautiful. I have felt such a feeling of delight as well. It is possible to notice that in Hell and Purgatory Dante’s journey resembles earthly wanderings. However, in Heaven, he is travelling in a completely miraculous way and it is very inspiring.
