In Quarter 4, I wrote literary analysis, one hundred word sentence, a canterbury tale, division and classification paper, and research paper. For the literary analysis, though I was familiar with the style from previous high school english classes, I struggled with the paper. I found myself frustrated with the time limit as with more time, I feel I could have done a better job. However, considering the time limit, I am pleased with the amount of detail and support I was able to put into the paper. The literary analysis met my standards as it was the best of ability given the time restriction, and it was satisfying to know I could complete an entire analysis in an hour and a half. One hundred word sentence was completely new to me as I had never attempted something like this before. While it was frustrating at times figuring out how to add more detail in the same sentence, I greatly enjoyed the assignment. I liked being able to make a story as well as improving my grammar skills. In the end, the one hundred word sentence was extremely satisfying to complete and meet my standards as it was grammatically correct while still being interesting. Unlike the one hundred word sentence, the canterbury tale was extremely frustrating for me as I struggled to get the lines to rhyme while having enough syllables and flow well. This semester of writing has been truly interesting for me. Being able to write within a topic that interests me has made the process more exciting and engaging. I can see this growth in my papers this semester, but I feel that other, perhaps, cannot. It is true that the mechanics of my writing have improved and I am more able to articulate my thoughts and position. However, the real improvement, that other may not see, has been in my self-esteem and confidence in my own writing skills. I chose my sixth writing assignment as my example of progress for a variety of reasons. The two most prominent reasons are that it is one of my later assignments, and, therefore, will represent the most recent evidence of my progress and that it received my highest grade of all of my assignments.
Next, I will reflect on the effect of using the approaches we discussed above. This will be addressed in three main points: what does the literary lens that I used most often allow me to notice in literature, what are the drawbacks to using this lens so frequently, and how much my engagement with literature would’ve changed if I had used more of the intertextual lens that I used the least.
I have been practicing on how to improve my writing over the past few weeks, which has taught me a great deal about writing. My teacher would like me to evaluate and explain my strengths and weaknesses in my own writing. This evaluation is in between my two essays. One on my own and another with my teacher's help. I have strengths and weakness in my introduction, body paragraphs ,and my conclusion.
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
We are already midway through the first quarter of my last year as a high school student. I find it hard to completely grasp how quickly this year is passing and yet I feel like we've already accomplished so much.
I feel strongly and I am convince that the fact that I had a headache and blocked sinuses affected my learning during the course time.
Olympian, Kim Collins said, “Strive for continuous improvement, instead of perfection.” This quote can also apply to students in school in many different ways. Students always want the best project or writing grade that they can possibly get. While that is a worthy goal it is not realistic because students are not perfect and they are still learning, and developing important skills. In my personal essays throughout the year I did strive for perfection, but I learned that I could not do it. I had to make slight improvements to better my writing for the next essay.
I have trouble writing because my writing seems to be a little “tongue-in-cheek” as my AP English teacher said. (I have a couple unfinished examples that I will attach). I tend to not know exactly what I am trying to say in my essays. It is not that I am a poor writer per se; I just have an issue focusing my writing. I enjoy writing; however, I become engrossed in the way I want to present my ideas. Perhaps it is that I do not know the audience to whom I am writing. I usually use proper grammar and mechanics but that is definitely not enough to write an exceptional essay. In this course, I feel strongly that I will develop these skills. Another concern I have with writing is when it is timed. I have never performed well in a timed writing assignment;
As a recent Egyptian immigrant to the United States, writing is the most difficult subject. In 7th grade, my writing process started to develop with the help of an amazing teacher. Ever since 7th grade I have been practicing wiring to be close to the high school writing slandered. I reached my goal last year when my act writing score is 6 point which places me in English 101. I doubted myself so, I took the Accuplacer test which also, placed me in English 101. I was scared when I saw the results that I’m going to fail this course. After taking this course, it made me more confident in writing and showed me my writing level which needs more practice. This class helped me improve my writing skills, by getting great feedback from my instructor
To effectively revise and edit my research paper, I read it carefully, as I played the reader`s role instead of that of a writer. In addition, I used a number of strategies to effectively revise and edit my research paper. First, I read my paper aloud as I listened for errors. After carefully listening, I was able to identify and correct errors in my writing, including grammar, incorrect sentence structure, incomplete ideas, and incorrect punctuation. While reading, I could stop and rectify the mistake at the point where I could note it. In addition, I read each sentence at a time so that I could digest the structure and identify any error. Taking English 1102 my second semester has given me the opportunity to develop my professional writing skills. I learned how to use the writing process effectively by brainstorming ideas, making drafts, and peer evaluations. In addition, I learned the title should give the reader a clue about the main idea of the paper. In my opinion, writing is simply expressing thoughts in a definite form. This self-assessment essay will reflect on my most successful and problematic assignments, errors in my writing, and how I have changed as a writer over the semester.
Reflecting on my english career on all of my english classes as a whole one of the areas of habits of mind that I have not only felt that I am drastically improved, but also believe that is one of my strengths as not only an english student, but a student in general is my strong ability with analyzing situations and responding with high level critical thinking. I have prided myself and also been told by almost every english teacher that I have had that my ability to articulate what I am thinking in a presentation and be able to analyze text, images and people is on a very high level. I am comfortable when speaking in front of people and I believe that some of my best work in High School have been presentations. As I discussed this year with my teacher where I fall short is the ability to translate what I am thinking and how exactly I say it and translate that into writing. Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It’s not that I think I’m a “bad writer,” I just get discouraged easily. What concepts, principles, or ideas that you have learned, do you think you will remember the most after you leave this class?
Reading and writing was never one of my strong suits in life, and continues to be until today. I have tried to improve my skills over the years, and in the process of doing so, has led me to enjoy the art of this topic. Because of my teachers and the academic opportunities I've had in my life, I was able to find the passion I want to carry out into the world and in my future.
