For my literature review paper, I plan to going into depth on ways to manage the inevitable stress associated with healthcare professions. I chose to research and learn more about this topic because I feel that this information will be extremely helpful due to the fact that I want to be a nurse after I graduate college. I understand that working in a healthcare profession comes with a lot of stress and it is important to be able to learn how to manage that stress. The first source that I chose is titled, “Managing your Stress”. This lengthy article is found on the Royal College of Nursing website and is written by Rachel Murray who is a counselor at the school and a CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist). With more than 300,000 members, Royal College of Nursing is the world's largest professional union of nurses and the fastest growing trade union in the UK. This article delves into the different types of stress you will find while being a nurse and discusses different ways to cope with that stress. Nursing is more demanding than many other professions or occupations, due to the combination of difficult patients, exhausting schedules and arduous physical work (Gordon 235). It can take a significant emotional toll on many, hence the higher levels of burnout. With the passing of the Affordable Care Act, a rise in patient care was expected however there were several factors that weren’t expected. One such factor was the number of patients that had chronic illnesses that had been ignored for so long due to not having insurance. The care for these critically ill patients caused an increased strain on nurses and other health care professionals. The increased stress on workers caused them to consider an alternative career. Workplace stress is has contributed to an increase amount of depression and burnout in nurses, which caused a ripple effects of call outs, nurse shortage, and more burnout. Another factor that was not considered was the increased amount of paperwork that has been added. According to the new regulations of the Affordable Care Act, “190 million additional hours of paperwork annually” (heritage.com) has been added which inadvertently has reduced the amount of one on one patient time. This again, is another factor that will contribute to the burnout of the healthcare professionals.

Becoming a nurse requires extensive schooling and training that for most students causes considerable amounts of stress to be placed on their success for the future. Nursing school places students in an environment that is rigorous and competitive which in turn results in high-stress levels experienced by these students. The stress inflicted on these students causes them to experience health problems along with deterring them from completing their studies. Additionally, the pressure and struggles these students are facing are being ignored by those placing them under these conditions, ignoring the fact that the educators of these students are responsible for ensuring the well-being of these students. Proven that nursing students experience more stress than the average college undergraduate, the stress inflicted on nursing students by their educational process results in students that are less likely to succeed and that are overall less healthy both physically and mentally.
Nursing burnout is serious and in order to ensure that nurses are taken care of, the administration must implement incentives and policies that will provide nurses with the resources to maintain a healthy work life balance. Burnout accounts for many of the medication errors and patient injuries in healthcare facilities. Most nurses are overwhelmed because of the caseload and longer workdays necessary to complete charting. “Nurses have to manage their emotions and the expression of their emotions to perform best care, and their behaviors pass through emotional labor” (Badolamenti 1). Sandra Badolamenti's definition of emotional labor involves the nurses ability to hide what they are feeling and their ability to perform the best patient care possible regardless of how stressful their current situation is. Jiunn-Horng talked about this in his academic journal. He talked about the effects on emotional labor male nurses in particular. Horng said, “Nurses are required to show high emotional labor, but this can bring about excessive reassure and emotional exhaustion”. I agree with this because even working at a family practice I have to work with kids and that can be emotionally draining. By the end of the day I am tired but I have to but my frustrations aside both with children and adults so I can provide the best care possible. One of the first things I thought about when I decided on becoming a nurse was how hard it would be to get through the schooling. It wasn’t until later that I thought about how hard it is emotionally for nurses. Every healthcare facility should provide a positive environment so that the employees do not get stressed when they are working. Stressful work environments, long work hours and inadequate sleep all contribute to an increase in physical and mental exhaustion amongst nurses. Typically, people choose nursing as a career to help others and to make a difference in their lives, without realizing the number of duties this career demands. Nurses may suffer in silence when they are experiencing stress. The effects can impact safe and reliable care by decreasing job satisfaction, decreasing productivity, causing poor personal health, and compromising patient care. Many facilities would benefit from implementing evidence-based strategies to address nurse fatigue and burnout.
Nurses, always involved in patient care, sometimes experience detrimental effects with prolonged stress or “burnout” during their career throughout the years. Burnout is defined as an extended response to physical or emotional stressors. Some examples of these stressors are; memories of witnessing death, patient and family suffering, emotional stress of losing patients, feeling emotionally and physically drained, or emotional disconnect from staff which can all contribute to burnout. As a result, nurses can experience; exhaustion, anxiety, dissatisfaction and low capacity. Overall, burnout can have negative effects not just on the emotional and physical health of nurses but also on; patient satisfaction, outcomes and mortality of nurses and patients. Although, there are ways to reduce or prevent these negative effects of burnout from manifesting. For example, nurses can apply interventions to reduce these risks including; staff support, onsite counselors and psychiatrists for nurses and salary increases and reimbursement opportunities for nurses through clinical ladder programs. Nurses can also start by just saying no to certain requests, being aware of their tolerance level, by taking care of themselves and having fun outside of work. On the other hand, others do not think nursing burnout is fatal and nurses just need a break from their job to initiate change.
