Problem solution Essay Final draft Littering in My Neighborhood A major community problem that I have noticed in my neighborhood in the city of Oakland California has been littering in public space. Littering entails throwing away garbage recklessly in the neighborhood instead of using trash bins or designated trash disposal areas. Individuals who litter either are not aware or do not care about the environmental impact their self- centered behavior is having and the negative impact it leaves on the people living in the neighborhood. Further, people are more likely to litter where there is already a littered environment,

According to a report by Natural Resources Defense Council, the city of Oakland is spending about $8 Million on this service. (Learn How Much, n.d) I believe this should considerably reduce the water-borne diseases among the city residents. Further, I believe it is essential for the community to be educated about the ill-sides of littering to avoid similar situations arising in future years; so that the city can spend the tax dollars on other pressing needs than on undoing avoidable littering. Littering has led to an unpleasant atmosphere and odor in my locality. Pedestrians and Motorists driving through the neighborhood have significantly contributed to the littering problem here in the city of Oakland by flinging away polythene bags with garbage on the streets; rodents and stray animals rip open the bags strewing its contents on the street further denigrating the location. Further the winds blowing take the garbage on the streets and strew it …show more content…
Stores and Restaurants are mandated to keep trash bins within 10 feets of entrance, as evidenced by a research done by Walt Disney Co that determined people litter if trash bins are further than 25 steps. (Being a Good Neighbor, 2015) However, I do believe unless people are made aware that their lackadaisical attitude towards littering could lead to ill health of people including their own, and could negatively impact their financial well being, they are unlikely to change their behavior. Local authorities should spend tax dollars pro-actively training people on how they could positively impact the environment by categorizing waste into recycle, reuse and disposing effectively. Businesses in the area could encourage their employees to spend some hours in annual neighborhood cleanup, or adopt a street for cleanup on a monthly
When you are driving down the roads of Miami County, all you see is litter. My vision for the future of Miami County is to have little to no litter on the ground because it looks better, is better for the economy, and is better for the animals. Less litter is better looking to the eyes and is less trashy looking. That makes it look very trashy and makes it look like we all don’t care about the Earth and what shape it’s in. Less litter is also better for the economy, for the ground, and also for the water. Litter is very bad for the earth. Litter in the water can kill organisms. Litter on the ground pollutes the soil, which can pollute the plants that grow in the soil or can stop the plants from growing. If animals or humans eat the plants that
Have you ever thought about what your community would look like without litter? If so, it may take a while to find out. One person throwing something on the ground may not think much of it, however, when that trash finds other trash, they begin to build up and make big piles of junk. For example, I am sure people never thought that if they littered, their trash would end up in the pacific garbage patch. Believe it or not, no one thinks that until you look at the pacific garbage patch and see how disgusting it looks just because people were to lazy to throw their trash away. To make matters worse, littering has become very common, which should be stopped because in most cases, trash is not disposed of properly,
"A two month litter blitz resulted in a numvber of fines for people caught throwing litter around Blacktown.
Recycling is known very well to most of the United States. It has been a buzzword since my childhood in the 80's. However, many towns and metropolitans, including my home town of Savannah, have trouble getting their residents to actively participate in the recycling programs. There are many reasons people can site for not participating, some are personal issues, and some are those of the city itself. The first that comes to mind far too often is even though most solid waste can be sorted and recycled, the amount that is picked up is not even half as frequent. From a city stand point, expansion of the program itself may cause a hemorrhaging of money that can't be undone. Landfills have been an environmentally sound option for years, but they all have the same problem of finite space. On the surface it seems simple, but nothing is ever that easy. Both recycling programs and landfills cost large amounts of capital to maintain. With the goal of an environmentally stable city, landfills and their finite space will always be a problem. With vision and drive maybe the tables can be turned.
Littering is nothing but waste that is being disposed improperly. If you take a look around you will realize that
The best way to protect our environment is to develop a public education program and pay for additional maintenance person to pick up trash. I would center these things around public areas especially the park, a common area of many visits. The public education program
What could be a project students at my school can do to help the community? There are tons of things to do like pick up trash along the school grounds or the road. We could have fundraisers to help the community raise money. There are all kinds of things to do, but the trash on school grounds and along the road is really ridiculous.
There is also an economic aspect to the harms of litter. Houses in littered neighborhoods sell for less money, and much of what is thrown away or littered could have been recycled and could have been made into something new. But surprisingly, the most littered item in the world is a cigarette butt. They may be small, but there harm is much
It may seem harmless and innocent, but littering is an unhealthy habit people of all ages in each country do every day. Littering is a second nature to some people; after doing it for so long and often, they do not realize they do it. As more and more people continue to litter, environments, animals, and humans are being harmed by people’s carless actions. Americans, as well as all humans, need to be more aware of how hazardous and costly littering is to the world and the creatures living in it. Littering shows lack of respect for the world, and needs to be prevented in order for future generations to live in a clean and healthy environment.
First of all, I believe there should be trash collectors in neighborhoods. There are multiple reasons for having trash collectors in neighborhoods. In the U.S there is just under 50% of air pollution. In addition having trash collectors in neighborhoods would help prevent pollution. Most people in the United States like having expensive homes. Although not everyone can afford expensive home everyone likes having a clean home. Not to mention not all people realize how much pollution hurts animals every year. Many animals around the globe are suffering from pollution such as dare
Littering is one of the biggest environmental issues we face today. Littering affects us all, from humans to animals and our surroundings. The careless act of littering from a simple piece of plastic thrown on the ground can clog storm drains or that piece of plastic may go straight to the ocean and harm wildlife. Littering is a health hazard which causes harmful bacteria and germs. Removing litter from the environment costs everyone money. Littering is the most important environmental issue our nation is facing because it is done so easily and carelessly. People do not realize how much we spend on cleaning litter every year or how it affects us all. The practice has become second nature, we have avoided to educate ourselves on how this affects us in the long run. Littering needs to be minimized or if possible, completely stopped if we could help it because we are doing more harm to the earth.
People will become more cognizant of these issues and perhaps cease their habits of littering. My reporting is not to make people think that the entire city of Philadelphia is raunchy and gross, but that certain places in the city could use some improvements. It has come to my attention that people see Philadelphia has ghetto and dirty. I think Philadelphia should form more cleaning groups made up of young people who are willing to help the community. This can help the youth, particularly teenagers, to be aware of littering and travel to different places in the city. Likely, these teenagers would stop littering themselves. This has a positive effect on the future of our country. In my opinion, to enhance the success of the cleanup movements, the delegates in the convention should give a motivating speech on his or her opinions, ideas, and solutions on pollution. Future leaders, like the delegates, can encourage people to work hard to reduce
One obvious reason why we shouldn’t litter is because it doesn’t look pretty. No one wants to go on a hike and see random trash everywhere, it just isn’t pretty. I know it’s not a big deal that it doesn’t look pretty but it is a big deal when it is causing pollution. It is proven that organic litter in big amounts can cause water pollution. The definition of pollution is (according to dictionary.com) the contamination
It is not only harming us but animals as well. Littering comes from construction sites, people that eat at fast food places, pedestrians, people that drive over 50 miles a day, and many more. What can we do to address this issue? Is repetition to get the students attention. Just one simple announcement and they’ll forget the next day. So discussing the issue on daily emails, rallies, and having teachers talk about the problem with trash can remind students that all trash goes in the trash cans. The change students are to commit is to walk
