Throughout Melba’s time of being a fifteen and sixteen year old she went through the struggles of having to deal with adversity. There were times where she was put down by her peers at her new school and even the people that she thought were her friends from her old school because she had chosen to be a part of the Little Rock Nine. Melba soon begins to learn that things were only going to get worse from there, but as she goes through each day she remembers what Grandma India tells her on the daily. Her promise to God that she’d push through even comes to mind during hard times. During the times of what should have been the greatest moments of her life were most likely her worst ones. Melba’s fortitude was tested by the malicious acts of many
As I begin to read Lydia’s story, I recall the days that led up to the named storm, Hurricane Katrina. It was the year 2005. Most of the people I came in contact with were tracking the storm and wondered if the storm would come our way. We spoke of how we would prepare for the storm. I was afraid because my husband was on the road and I was alone to take care of my five-year-old child and my home. Lydia was brave as she rode out the storm.

After coming home from teaching, I found Melba coming home with a mysterious car. I had no idea who this car belonged to. I started to question her and panic. I was pacing around the room. I finally found out that this was a white boy’s car who seemed to have saved Melba from a boy named Andy. How are we going to trust a white boy? Who knows, he might have only done this because he wants to accuse us of stealing his car. But then I calmed down because if he had gone to the police, I’m sure someone would have already been here to look for it. I started to question how are we going to get his car back to him without letting anybody see us? He couldn’t be seen in our neighborhood and I wouldn’t dare to be seen in his, especially at night. Melba assured me he would call. We heard the phone ring and Melba rushed to pick it up. After their phone
When Leah arrives in Africa, she is oblivious to the completely different world she is entering. She attempts to help her father with his work, yearning for his attention and recognition, but does not understand the foreign environment and culture she is engulfed by; her father, too preoccupied with his work and too set in his misogynist ways, does not listen to his daughter or even regard her positively. However, Leah is utterly dedicated to her father, saying “I know
Throughout the year, Melba developed a warrior mentality in order to make it through each day. She became so fixated on surviving that she focused on little else during the school day. She also took the advice of her Grandma India and smiled in the face of her attackers. She applied the phrase “kill them with kindness”, which confused many of her attackers, which seemed to temporarily lessen the severity and frequency of their attacks.
In 1954, the Supreme Court took a step in history with the Brown V. Board of Education of Topeka by stating that, “In the field of public education the doctrine of ‘separate but equal’, has no place. Separate facilities are inheritably unequal.” Little Rock, Arkansas a city in the upper south became a location of a controversial attempt to put the court order into effect when nine African American students were chosen to desegregate Central High in Little Rock. How did the Little Rock Nine affect America? Sanford Wexler stated in The Civil Rights Movement: An Eyewitness History,” its “effect would ripple across the nation and influence the growing Civil Rights Movement;” in addition, the Little Rock crisis forced the federal government
Melba uses Faith many time in the book, for example, in chapter 14, one day after school Melba was not paying attention, and she let her guard down a
As she walks through the door after a long and exhausting day, Monee King is greeted with “Hey Mom!”, from her 4 beautiful teenage girls. She cooks an amazing dinner after cooking for others all day. They sit at the kitchen table and bow their heads in prayer. After a quiet “Amen” the table erupts in stories about each of the young girl's day. She listens and laughs while thinking “This wasn't easy but it was worth it”
As a child, Roberta Bondi didn’t have a peaceful childhood while growing up. She had to struggle with her faith, calling God, father, and even her relationship with her own father. Roberta was raised in a society where men were in control; however, she didn’t approve of such society due to her curiosity and not obeying what she’s been told. Melba shows courage throughout the book. She uses courage to face her problems while integrating Central High School. Beals wrote a lot in her diary during the rough times. In the text Melba states “ I had never before felt such fear” which is pertaining to the fact the she is depending on Danny to stand by her and take care of her. Melba was frightened by the fact that she was going through something that most teenagers don’t go through. She didn’t want to go through the rough times. As she was thinking to herself she said “counting on a white man to defend me against other white people determined to hurt me” she shows courage by staying strong during the integration and harsh times she was going through. During this text she is stating that she trust in Danny and God to protect her during everything. She was very scared during all of this but stayed strong throughout the times that she could’ve easily given up. Beals also stated “By the beginning of the march, i had sunk into the state of mind you get into when you know you have to take castor oil and there’s no way out.”. She is now entering a march to fight for her freedom and equality. Melba is doing everything she can to protect her color and race from the evil white people. She uses courage to stay strong and to have a good attitude. Melba presents strong courage during her time of fighting for her freedom and equality.
America has had quite a history. Moreover, America has had a distinct history concerning racial differences. From the Civil War to the Civil Rights Act, America has showed past that is unforgettable. However, America has showed a history concerning African Americans that still show up in our present today. The Little Rock Nine, staged in 1957, proves that we are not that far away from our previous actions against a different race. In the American heritage and main structure of government, it says that all men are created equal. This paper will tell of the Little Rock Nine and their struggle, and how it has changed America for the better.
Hannah, a freshman in college, has had a life of asthma, major depression, and epilepsy. While on theatrical stage in her first college debut, Hannah collapses on stage in a seizure. After running tests on Hannah in the hospital, the doctor suggests that her lifelong health issues could possibly be because she is a survivor of abortion. This is the first time Hannah not only learns she’s an abortion survivor, but adopted too. In anguish and searching for answers, Hannah journeys with her friends to Mobile, Alabama in search of her birthmother. When Hannah first reconnects with her birthmother, Cindy, tracking her down at her work office, Cindy rejects her yet as again as she did at her failed abortion. In the movie, Miss Clara asks God for a woman to mentor. Through God’s mysterious ways, Elizabeth shows up as her realtor and begins to tell of her struggles. Romans 8:28 says “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” This verse gives reassurance to God’s children that He has a perfect plan without fault. Through watching this film and analyzing the main themes, I realize that my hard times and trials have an eternal meaning. I may not understand and grasp the reason why I suffer through tribulations, but I maintain the faith that God has a strategy.
Everyone has experienced a time when he or she has fell short of the glory of God. Hard times bring about tests of faith and loyalty to God. People feel the need to give up or give in to the temptation because their faith cannot withstand the tests. This is the exact case for my character Melony. Melony is a straight “A” student in high school who has major plans and big dreams about the future, but she puts them on hold to deal with the hurt and pain of losing
The author shows how Marjane is comforted by God when He holds her in His arms before she falls asleep. Marjane is an exceptionally religious young girl, although she sometimes struggles to express her spirituality because her parents are very modern and not religious. One specific frame shows Marjane being held in God’s arms like a baby. God tells her, “Yes you are, celestial light, you are my choice, my last and best choice’” (Satrapi 8). This frame shows how Marjane’s relationship with God resembles one which a mother might have with their child. Marjane confides in God, which results in her wanting to become a prophet. God is Marjane’s safe haven, He provides her with a sense of comfort and security. Additionally, Marjane feels as if her relationship with God cannot be altered because she is a loyal servant to Him. Furthermore, Marjane states, “Deep down I was very religious but as family we were very modern and avant-garde” (Satrapi 6). This represents how Marjane has conflicting religious views with her family. This indicates how the harder Marjane tries to find a balance between her religious and modern views, the less attention she uses to focus on God. Marjane begins to realize that her relationship with God is not as strong as she once thought when she pushes Him away in order to focus on the rebellion.
