History of the Lombard’s discovered by Paul the Deacon, written in the 8th century. The 7th-century Origin of the Lombard People was the chief source for Paul for Lombard origins. The story was about a small tribe called the Winnili dwelling in southern Scandinavia (Scadanan). The tribe were split into three groups and one group sought for foreign fields and leave their native land. Overpopulation was the reason for the exodus. The leader of that group was Ybor and Aio (brothers) and their mother Gambara and arrived in the lands of Scoringa. Scoringa was ruled by the Vandals and their chieftains, the brothers Ambri and Assi, who granted the Winnili a choice between tribute or war. The Winnili were young and bold and refused to pay tribute. The Vandals consulted with Godan and prepared for war. One of the Winnili leaders Gambara asked help from frea.With the help of frea Winnili were won the war and from that moment onwards, the Winnili were known as the Longbeards.
