Loneliness is very abundant in North America in this generation. It has become a problem and people are relying less and less on family and friend comfort. In my opinion, I feel that this is very bad and can lead to health issues. I feel like we, as humans, were made to comfort and be comforted by other humans. Caring for one another was a very good trait back in the day, but now families are less accepting or do not care about their children, causing them to rebel. One reason I think people are solely relying on themselves in their lives now, is because people in this generation are so cruel. They can tear people down with just words and can cause trust issues. Another reason I think this generation is so lonely is because of the social media
Loneliness is a universal human experience that is uniquely experienced by each individual. Francis (1976), as cited by Bekhet, Zauszniewski, & Nakhla (2008) defines loneliness as an unwelcomed emotional state, feeling of lack of companionship and a wish for interaction that is different from the one being experienced. Bekhet et al. (2008) defined loneliness as the experience of isolation, disorientation, or “lostness”. It is an experience that occurs when a persons network of social relationships are deficient either qualitatively or quantitatively (Potter, Perry, & Potter, 2010).

So by quoting this data Halpern demonstrates that looking back more than 200 years and comparing it to modern times, people are entering into marriage later in life, there are fewer large families, and more people are living by themselves. However, looking back only a few decades he concludes that the number of young people in America who are living alone is increasing very quickly. He further supports that the increase in occupations that are solitary in nature are also contributing to the loneliness of America, which Halpern describes in his introduction as “traveling salesmen, Web designers, phone-bank operators, and online day traders who live and work in
In the novella, Of Mice and Men, author John Steinbeck creates a world of solitude and isolation through the characters of his story. The men and women in Of Mice and Men illustrate that though one may not physically preside alone, the characters will portray the mental and emotional seclusion and the overwhelming feeling of loneliness that still dwells within them. The inevitability of aloneness within the lives of each one of Steinbeck’s characters in Of Mice and Men alludes to the fact that it does not matter the situation one may currently or previously endure, one’s mental status, marital status, or racial status, the feeling of loneliness will preside in the mist of all the other feelings that one may feel. John Steinbeck displayed that seclusion and desolation which presides in the world in which the characters of the novella Of Mice and Men dwell in and their lives and trails display how each one of them either over overcome or become victim of the obliterating feeling of loneliness.
Living alone is the state of residing in a home without another human being. Being lonely is defined as the state of being sad because one has no friends or company. These two concepts are often misunderstood for being interchangeable due to popular belief. However, in “Living Alone is The New Norm”, living alone is not the same as loneliness due to the quality of social interaction, social activity, as well as other emotional factors that come into play. Personally, I have witnessed these ideologies unfold before my very eyes in my own experience.

Generally almost all loneliness can be traced back to low or below "average" self-esteem. Chronically lonely people will usually have low opinions of themselves. They may think of themselves as unintelligent, unattractive, broken, unwanted, not worthy of good things, no good, unable to do anything right, and/or socially isolated. Unlike many other emotionally hurting people, the chronically lonely usually know what is wrong, but like many others they don't believe they can do anything to fix it, or, circling back to the low self-esteem, they may also believe they are not worth of happiness.
