QUALITY OF LIFE IN LONG-TERM CARE
Critical Advocacy Issue As the world evolves with an aging population, long-term care comes to the forefront for many families. Long-term care is defined as any type of personal care and/or assistance that an individual or individuals may receive on a long-term basis as a result of a disability, or as a result of a chronic illness that limits the individual’s ability to function. Those families want quality of life for their aging loved ones. With a growing knowledge and interest in long-term care coupled with a determined advocacy for the quality of life, these two facets can be meshed successfully to create a positive impact on the lives of the aging.
Historically, the biggest challenge in creating a quality of life in regards to long-term care is the existing tunnel vision that nursing home care is the main, or only setting for long-term care. Nursing homes have traditionally had a very poor reputation and have been the butt of many bad jokes and horrid tales over the years. Traditional attitudes and opinions of nursing home care are that they provide a very substandard, very poor quality of life for residents. This …show more content…

These domains include “security, comfort, meaningful activity, relationships, enjoyment, dignity, autonomy, privacy, individuality, spiritual well-being, and functional competence” (Singh, 2014, p. 166). For the aging population, these factors serve to provide a well-balanced state of being. Quality of life is born out of this well-balanced state of being. In order to have balance, these factors must also go hand in hand with health and safety outcomes. In other words, more than one area of focus is the most beneficial. All of these factors, when well-balanced together, provide the best quality of life for any individual, and especially for an aging adult in the realm of long-term
