Love Actually Sociological Analysis
Love Actually (2003), is a romantic comedy/drama that combines over ten romantic tales in one. What makes this a unique ‘chick flick’ is that all of these individual stories have different love styles and relationship types. The movie links these characters together in a series of touching and comedic romances, which end in not one, but many idealistic climaxes on Christmas Eve. The theme of the movie is an elaboration of the title, "Love Actually Is All Around”, meaning that everywhere you look, love is the driving force in people's lives. PLOT

In T. Coraghessan Boyle’s story “The Love of My Life,” it centers around the teenage relationship of Jeremy and China who claim to be in love with one another and nothing else matters to them. The relationship between the two is great until they encounter their first real obstacle in the relationship when China becomes pregnant. Raymond Carver wrote "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" in 1981, by doing this Carver also created the character Mel. This short story is written in first person narration from Nick, one of Mel's friends. Both of their wives, Terri (Mel) and Laura (Nick) are also in the kitchen having the love conversation with Mel and Nick. Mel is a forty five year old, tall, curly headed cardiologist. Mel also has an ex-wife with whom he had children with. Mel is related to the theme of Love being undefinable by bringing up the conversation of love, talking about several examples of what love is or is not, trying to prove his point even though he does not completely understand what love is, and being an example of undefinable love himself.
1862 England (Victorian Era) was somewhat of an uptight society, especially compared to today. The majority of people, especially those in the upper class, were expected to be utmostly prim and proper and follow societal norms at all times. This included love, or what love was defined as during the period. George Meredith, in his poem aptly titled “Modern Love”, sets a scene where a husband and wife are sleeping side by side, both reflecting sorrowfully on their melancholy marriage. Meredith argues in this poem that the institution of modern love is inherently flawed, by exposing to the reader that while the husband and wife still care for each other, they want to leave each other because they are both scared of “modern love”. By doing so, Meredith is able to justify his overarching message that applies to all: love is a feeling that cannot be artificially replicated, and attempting to do so is only a detriment.
"It’s a hard thing to explain to somebody who hasn’t felt it, but the presence of death and danger has a way of bringing you fully awake. It makes things vivid. When you’re afraid, really afraid, you see things you never saw before, you pay attention to the world. You make close friends. You become part of a tribe and you share the same blood- you give it together, you take it together." Serving in the Vietnam war was never easy for Tim O 'Brien, he had some very interesting things that happened to him.
Macklemore’s song, “Same Love,” with Ryan Lewis, featuring Mary Lambert, tells the younger generation about discrimination against gays, homophobia, and inequality. The song calls out people who want freedom, where our country came from, and what are religion says to show how if we don’t accept gays, there is a lot we can never have. Macklemore is disappointed with the way hip hop and rap talk about gay people without realizing how difficult they are making gay’s lives. It is also great when Macklemore practically asks religious people how exactly they do not support gay rights, and why they believe it is wrong because God is supposed to love everyone. Macklemore gives his honest opinion on how he feels everyone should be equal, and there are no “buts” or “ifs.” I stand by his opinion about love being love no matter what. Macklemore’s song, “Same Love,” he talks about societies false ideas of gays, the way the term “gay” is used in hip hop music, and that we are not equal until we allow gay rights with a huge change at heart.

The romantic comedy is a subgenre that has as its central narrative the quest for love that almost always ends with a successful conclusion. It accents love in a light and upbeat manner while also frequently embracing sentimental or melodramatic story developments. Similar to every other genre, it has a set of characteristics or conventions that allow the audience to know what to expect. The key traits that allow one to recognize a movie as a romantic comedy are its realistic characters, traditional dating ritual, and slow story pacing. These conventions of romantic comedies can be further understood by analyzing the narrative functions of two films that depict positive images of true love and its power to transform one’s life: Roman Holiday and Notting Hill.
Alain de Botton in “How Fiction Ruined Love” says that our culture’s infatuation on over climatic, romanticized love stories has a shock on our actual lives. In modern culture, few stories manage to convey the complications of a long-lasting relationship. Namely, people often go into relationships with unrealistic and high expectations. Few examples of this are when the going gets tough, couples often clamp under the pressure of everyday life. Ultimately, Alain de Botton argues that love is so much more that just sexual feeling and passion that romantic novels and movies portray it to be.
Mandy Len Catron, Modern Love issues are about her experiences with weird love experiments. In one of her articles “To Stay in Love, Sign on the Dotted line” Catron writes “it reminds us that love isn’t something that happens to us- it’s something we’re making together”. “It” represents love and she believes that both partners must contribute to the relationship if they want the bond to grow and if they want to feel love. Catron made a contract with her partner, Mark, that explains everything from finances to chores to their expectations in their future and lasts 12 months with an option to renew.

The word love has different meanings depending on what context it is used in, sometimes it means having deep affection towards someone or something, love for but here I am going to try and answer the question, “Is there a sociology of love?”. In my essay I am going to discuss a sociology of love referring to the article of the study conducted by Gabb and Fink, in which they use multiple research methods relationships behaviours and personal lives. They have provided a detailed description of how the couples tailor their relationships, including the emotions invested in their relationships. Each couple dealing with their love relationships in a different their way. The study looked at different
Max Shulman’s piece, “Love is a fallacy” expresses many arguments expressed during every day social interactions. In the piece, the author comes into contact with his roommate, Petey Bellows and a possible love interest, Polly Espy. The author makes many unjustified guess pertaining to their wisdom and intelligence, and these false pretenses contribute to his interactions with the two, and he aims to take advantage of the opportunity of manipulating the two into achieving his own selfish desires. His plan backfires, and he is forced to reconsider his actions. In the process, Max Shulman reveals that his piece is both anti-women, anti-men, and Shulman underestimates the intuitive and emotional aspects of love.
Today, romance is one of the most popular genres to watch on television. Unlike most, romance is a genre where the plot revolves around the love between two main characters as they experience the highs and lows of love. “Common themes that revolve around romantic movies are kissing, love at first sight, tragic love, destructive love, and sentimental love” (Taylor). These themes appear in many historical films and the pattern still continues in modern films as well. Watching romantic movies has a giant negative influence on the viewer's analysis of what love and relationships should really be like. These films give the wrong impression of reality when it comes to dating, marriage, having children, and even how to manage a relationship in
