The bond between Gabrielle and Daniel ,who were in high school, reveals numerous concepts of personal relationships. Throughout the documentary Love Etc. the couple showed the concept of wholeness by doing various activities together, from applying to a
Released in the summer of 1994, the movie “When a Man Loves a Women” produced by Touchstone Pictures’ producer Jon Avnet created a film that touches on a female alcoholic. This film included stars like Meg Ryan, Andy Garcia, and Lauren Tom. An airline pilot played by Garcia as Michael and his wife Alice portrayed by Ryan are forced to deal with her alcoholism. Within this family it includes that of her two children and the nanny (Lauren Tom). The film offers several hinting scenes to Alice’s addiction. Alcoholism is a disease of denial, the movie focuses on not only the alcoholic but those around her that deny and have even grown accustomed to her drinking.
In the movie “The Notebook” there are two characters, Allie and Noah who are a very different from each other, but are also quite alike. Allie and Noah both fall in love with each other over time and start dating. Both of these characters face problems in their relationship that are caused by their differences and similarities. There personalities, looks, wealth and what they represent have lots of similarities and differences
The film starts off with the protagonists’ encounter in a baseball tournament. Invitation communication begins with Gary asking Brooke if she would like to have a hotdog. On relationship meaning level, it reflects Gary’s interest in knowing Brooke. By the end of the tournament, Gary tries to ask her out, exploring the possibilities for a relationship with her. Despite Brooke calling him “crazy”, she still chuckles and responds to Gary’s pick-up lines, hinting that Brooke is not totally uninterested. It is quickly followed by the opening credits with intimate photos that captured the intensifying communication stage between the protagonists. Their long term commitment takes the form of cohabitation, thus completing the escalation phase of
When Harry Met Sally is a romantic comedy that breaks out of the norm of the genre with some very real messages about interpersonal communication between both genders and how we handle different situations differently. When Harry met Sally is one of the greatest romantic comedies I’ve watched. Harry and Sally are perfect examples of two people for searching for a companion. In the beginning both are very opposites but in the end Sally and Harry both longed for true love, friendship and security.
In the first shot of scene one, we are introduced to the character Senor Love Daddy which begins with an ECU (extreme close up shot) of his mouth, along with the top of the microphone and his hand with is holding an alarm clock. The alarm clock (which is a prop) is making an extremely loud, irritating, ringing sound. This is done to grab our attention from the get-go by referencing the conflict within the film which can be to some the conflict slowly reframes as it is zooming out which is allowing us to see more of Senor Love Daddy’s face and the microphone. This entire introduction scene is shown with a hard-reddish light coloring, this coloring motif paired with the slow zoom is to show us how hot it is within the setting of the film.
For this paper I chose to analyze the film The Break-Up, a 2006 American romantic comedy directed by Peyton Reed, starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. The film features Brooke and Gary, a couple which has been together for several years, but their defensive and unsupportive communication climate leads to a complete breakdown of the couple’s relationship. Throughout this paper I will show how important interpersonal communication is in relationships. The communication principles I will use is, communication is transactional and communication is irreversible. Furthermore, I have chosen four key terms which include, symmetrical conflict style, communication
Music is part of everyday life and serves as the center of many cultures across the world. Music brings out the best parts of a movie, a car ride, or even a special event. The purpose of music varies from artist to artist and different cultures. Every piece of music carries a unique message, but a song, in particular, carries meaning. “Runaway Love” by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige, exploits the struggles of young girls by using rhetorical techniques, such as pathos, ethos, logos, tone, and visual rhetoric throughout the music video to raise national awareness about youth runaways.
In class we viewed documentary titled Girlhood, the film surrounded two teenage girls named Megan and Shanae. Both of the girls have been in the system for years, Megan has been in and out of juvenile detention centers and foster homes for years and is incarcerated this time for attacking one of the other youth at her foster home with a box cutter. Shanae was incarcerated at the tender age of 11 for stabbing a “friend” to death during a fight. The film focuses on getting to know the girls personalities, family history, the journey of their rehabilitation and overall how they ended up in the situations that they are currently in. It also captures the girls in a different light (their funny personalities, them being hopeful, intelligent, and just needing support) instead of just portraying them as juvenile criminals who were just terrible people.
Several relationships are highlighted in the film to show how couples can show and express intimacy towards each other. Most of the couples in the film show their intimacy in many different ways. Some common ways that couples show their intimacy are kissing one another, hugging, or presenting them with a gift. Some uncommon ways how some of the people in the movie show their intimacy of their relationships were going on a fourteen hour flight, through phone calls or texting. An example of an uncommon relationship was between Captain Kate Hazeltine and Holden. Although they didn’t share an intimate relationship, they showed affectionate ways of communicating with each other on the plane.
Gretta and Dan’s relationship doesn’t meet the four qualities of genuinely love as established by Swidler in chapter seven. It’s most notably not love
Genre theory is used to study films and put them into a classification so that audiences know what type of film it is before they see it. Genres are categories based on the story of the film, sometimes the actors and actresses, or even the directors. All films fall under a genre or sub-genre category. Romantic Comedy is an example of a genre which is light-hearted, humorous story involving people in love, sometimes overlapping with subgenres such as screwball comedy teen comedy, or gross-out comedy. ( Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). This paper will focus on the romantic comedy genre and movie Rocky. It will take a better look at the specific conventions of this genre and how this movie fits the gangster genre.

Ashlee Page the director of ‘The Kiss’, a short film based on the short story ‘The Kiss’ written by Peter Goldsworthy, and Kevin Macdonald the director of ‘Touching the Void’, a documentary with some re-enactments based on the novel ‘Touching the Void’ written by Joe Simpson, both use a range of stylistic conventions to explore the common theme of survival. Survival is defined as surviving under adverse circumstances and enduring challenges, whilst fighting internal conflicts, debating with oneself about their chances of living. The titles of both films are cleverly used to display the theme of survival. Page uses the word ‘kiss’ to represent the ‘kiss of life’, while Macdonald uses the word ‘void’ to portray physiological torment and alienation.
The film Shakespeare in Love is a wonderful movie directed by John Madden. The film seems pretty straightforward at the beginning, but there are subtle things that make the film more enticing. John Madden added these things to make the film look and feel more real. I will be discussing more about this film white discussing its impact on myself and the audience.
